Using Freud’s economical (quantitative) point of view of metapsychology and her revised drive theory, the author offers a conception of aggression that integrates the assumptions of different psychoanalytic schools. Aggression is understood as the forceful way of asserting one’s needs and desires whenever they are or seem to be thwarted. In economic terms, aggression is conceptualized as the intensified effort (increased energy quantities) of the preservative and/or sexual drives to reach their goals. This view sheds new light on the presuicidal state of mind when an important object (or its substitute) is lost. The extraordinary rise of drive energies, activated in a desperate and unrelenting effort to reach the unreachable object – sometimes in addition to the power of Nachträglichkeit – overwhelms and breaks the containing function of the psychic structures. Such breach causes the unbearable pain the suicidal person wants to escape from. Some clinical suggestions derive from this conception.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124271253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considered in its historic trajectory (and based on the references to the works of J.L. Moreno), this method of mediation is presented in its different forms (the individual psychodrama, the individual psychodrama in group and the individual psychodrama on group), their common denominator being the important part given to the improvised play which is itself based on a group dynamics which is initiated in concert by both the therapists and the patients. In this paper, particular attention will be given to the indications for this type of care, to its therapeutic effects and therefore to the psychical processes that it mobilises (notably in terms of the interconnections between the various ranges of symbolisation). Two clinical vignettes from the personal clinical practice by the authors will illustrate our purpose.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125290326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I explore the idea that sexual desire may be experienced as something foreign in us – as a drive for excess and boundlessness. Reflecting on the revolutionary project of surrealism from a psychoanalytic perspective, I specifically discuss female sexual desire as articulated by surrealist artists. I argue that art may confront us with what is foreign, thereby ‘calling’ upon us to integrate what was hitherto unrecognized.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121564204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How can literature and psychoanalysis enrich and illuminate each other? This text discusses methods and theory in psychoanalytic literary criticism. Contributions from object relations theory, the significance of the researcher’s subjectivity, and issues of transference are emphasized. The difference between the literary and the clinical on the one hand and the challenge of reductionism on the other are imminent concerns, and as such are elaborated. Abundant access to theory and methods, awareness of the researcher’s subjective involvement in the research process, and a determination to ensure articulation of meaning as it springs from the texts are emphasized as ways to counteract reductionism. Examples from psychoanalytic literary criticism and insights of authors on the underpinnings of their creative writing illustrate how literature and psychoanalysis meet in interest for the unconscious as it is embedded in language; how language can capture us in an emotional presence, even when words seem lost or absent.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134345314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Envious strivings are not in accordance with female ego-ideals. Freud’s theory of penis envy has aroused much criticism. He wrote mainly about women’s envy of men. Klein maintained that breast envy is constitutional and primary, which has evoked protest, too. She wrote about universal envy of woman. Shame dynamics as instigators of envy are emphasized in this paper. Comparisons with others’ self-confidence and happiness may lead to feelings of inferiority and humiliation. One wants to return the balance of one’s self-esteem with various mechanisms: devaluing, spoiling or destroying the enviable. The emergence of shame in the girl’s laborious process of gaining separateness from her mother is illustrated with the myth of Kore/Persephone. Envy may be benign or malignant. The case of Jenni illustrates a pregnant analysand’s bitter envy of her pregnant analyst. Malicious envy of other women’s attractiveness, sexuality and pleasure in the primal scene is discussed in the myth of Athena and Medusa. Working through unconscious envy and aggression can contribute to construction of feminine pleasure, creativity and women as subjects.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128963981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Notably, the fourth book of the cycle, Taran Wanderer, is strikingly different from its predecessors, shedding much of the trappings of high fantasy for a simple bildungsroman. This paper examines the text, using Freud’s theories of symbolism, the family romance and the Oedipal conflict, to elucidate Taran’s underlying psychology and to show how the character’s unconscious motivations, molded by his identity as a foundling, drive the narrative. Finally, by applying insights gained from reader-response theory, this paper considers why Taran Wanderer, and adolescent fantasy literature more broadly, resonates so strongly with readers.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128650614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of premature development in response to childhood experiences of abuse has been developed by analysts including Sándor Ferenczi and Sigmund Freud. Such traumatic events lead a child to hasten psychic and somatic development in accordance with destructive and confusing impingements from the environment. Aligned with these theories, neuroscientific investigation has demonstrated comparable effects resulting from childhood trauma, including an accelerated and incomplete development of neural circuitry, as well as a physiological maturation that lowers the age of reproductive availability. These biological consequences, in conjunction with the effects of early trauma on later behaviors, including impulsivity and sexual risk-taking, may increase chances of early conception, which authors have posited may be an evolutionary adaptation to a chaotic environment. In addition, epigenetic and endocrine markers may be passed on by traumatized individuals to their offspring, potentially predisposing the latter to greater physiological stress in-utero and during early life, potentially furthering intergenerational effect of trauma. By combining insights from biological and psychoanalytic arenas, an enriched understanding can emerge from which to investigate the manifold effects of traumatic events, as relevant a concern today as it was a century ago.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128710578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
