I will consider some historical background data on this model as well as some historical data on the development in France which have created an alternative model of training. Especially in Sweden, there has been a stormy debate during the last years about the training analyst functions and some members have actually decided to leave our association because of this. I would like to try to shift focus from just a ‘yes-or-no-perspective’? to a broader question of our psychoanalytical society’s purpose and structure and how the training-model could sustain it.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117086647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The structure of article is as follows: first, we will describe briefly the historical background of single case studies and their position as the foundation of psychoanalytic knowledge formation. Secondly, we will describe through Amalia X’s case how one psychoanalytic ‘specimen case’ has been used as a cornerstone for a comprehensive psychoanalytic process research model, the so called ‘Ulm model’. Amalia X is one of the most studied single cases internationally also outside psychoanalytic process study field. Thirdly, we will introduce the central theory and practice of DSA. Fourthly, in the last section of our article, we will show in practice how DSA can be used in the analysis of Amalia’s dream in the session 152.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123863806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author suggests that his affective state, wholly different from his baseline condition before the stroke, is very close to what is reported by survivors of near-death experience (NDE), as long-time after-effects of the experience. Therefore, it is suggested that the psychoanalyst, in confronting with weird conditions of well-being, should consider the possibility of after-effects of an NDE, alongside with the operation of primitive defences.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130256456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Never leaving the field of Freudian analysis she explored the inevitable difficulties, due to our premature birth, to become moral subjects. Psychoanalysis was to her, as it was to Freud, a psychology of conflict. She was suspicious of seemingly optimistic views which saw conflict as created between the potentially free subject and one repressive external system or another. Freedom is always limited in psychoanalysis. In an attempt to follow the line of thought in her vast production the article touches upon her critique of Freud’s so called phallic monism, the significance of both parents’place in the psyche, the question of “Falsehood”, perversion as a dimension of the human psyche, and her concerned view on the situation of Western thought today. The author suggests that we might benefit from her radical Freudian stance in a time when the view on truth is undergoing many unfathomable transformations. Perhaps Chasseguet-Smirgels thought can also be an important reminder about the foundations of our work; not just sexuality, not just mental acts but their specific relationship to each other","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134150584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After lengthy autobiographical investigations, he writes of his discovery of the discussions of NDE, Near Death Experience, a cluster of symptoms that fit well to his own experience. In addition to this, Professor Rubino Pedersen also makes an important point about the failing communication between the research fields. Indeed, a lot has been published about NDE, a profound, existential experience that, according to Karl Jaspers, can be defined as a kind of limit experience. It includes often shattering feelings of transcendence of space, time and perceptual boundaries. Separation of mind from body, altered perception of time, space and memory revival are among its common components. Most frequently reported are strong positive affects, such as happiness and peace, empathy and unconditioned love. Seeing others from this and the otherworld in bright light or cosmic unity are repeating dimensions of NDE. Several people have reported reception of some extraordinary knowledge of existence and of safe trespassing across the boundary between life and death. The NDE experiences are for the most positive, though also some distressing events are narrated about. Constitutive for the pattern is that the symptoms arouse after ‘nearness of death’, in the situations after trauma, shock, anaesthesia, or generally after having encountered death in one way or another. According to several researchers, the common aftereffect, reported by almost all who have an NDE, is a total loss or a diminished fear of death and feelings of peace (Holden, Greyson and James 2009). The first psychological reports of NDE were published by William James and the research team around him in the late nineteenth century, mostly in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research. Before that similar type of experiences have been presented in the stories and narratives of rituals and religious experiences. According to many authors, experiences with parallel contacts are known in most cultures. From the early 70s, NDE has gained an enormous interest among several audiences, from psychology and psychiatry to neuroscience, western popular media, arts and new age. Edwin Shneidman, a psychiatrist who established a research initiative later named ‘thanatology’, described in 1971 narratives of a group of people who attempted suicide by jumping from Golden Gate. Subsequently, after having recovered after a fatal act, they told about the experience of peace and a feeling of a kind of new knowledge that made them feel safe and powerful. What was also important for Shneidman, a practising psychiatrist, was that several persons got rid of the coercive manner of attempting suicide. Concurrently, with Shneidman’s psychiatric work, Raymond Moody, a psychologist, published extensive research on NDE in a book ‘Life after Life’ (1975). There is first of all the text by Arne Jemstedt on the presence of the analyst and the analysand. It was read as one of the key notes in the Nordic congress in Turku 9.-12.8. 2018. The theme of the congress was ‘Presence and absence’. In the next issue we will publish a number texts presented in the same congress. In his contribution Thomas Jung interprets some of the poetic formulations of Bertolt Brecht, who was living in exile in the Scandinavia during the world war, relating them with poems Mario Benedetti, a well-known writer from Uruguay, and also with his own experiences as an architect working in a project with immigrants. There are four texts that address French psychoanalysis. We did not plan in advance to make a special issue of French psychoanalysis, but it became a kind of one. In her article Judy Gammelgaard discusses the non-symbolic level of psychic reality, addressing not only Freud’s theoretical ideas but also the conceptual models of Jean Laplanche and Jacques Lacan. Catharina Engström presents an overview of some of the key ideas of Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel, an eminent French analyst, especially concerning the importance of sexuality, the drives and psychic conflict in psychoanalysis. And then we have two texts in which a Lacanian analyst discusses the ideas of the Master. Julio Garcia Salas presents Lacan’s ideas concerning the subject who is analysed, emphasizing that the focus is on how and what it is spoken in the sessions, instead of what it is spoken about. Salas explains and also defends the Lacanian practice of varying the length of a session, and does this by writing about his own work with an analysand. Finally, Tobias Wessely and Pablo Lerner have has made an interview of Bruce Fink, arguably the most important writer on Lacan in English. Like Salas, Fink emphasises the clinical significance of the Lacanian approach. We hope that for the readers not so well acquainted with the French way of thinking these texts are rather informative and inspiring than frustrating and confusing. If one should try to characterise the distinctive nature of French psychoanalysis, certainly one good starting point would be the emphasis on the role of the other in its various forms. ‘Je est un autre’, Mallarme formulated, and Lacan, who has had an eminent influence on French psychoanalysis, both directly and indirectly, developed a very complicated, idiosyncratic and elusive theory of the others constituting a self. Lacan’s thinking is inspired by philosophers, especially by Hegel, as interpreted by Alexandr Kojéve. This philosophical orientation is one of the reasons that make it so challenging to conceive of and relate to for an analyst not acquainted with the French figures of thinking and writing. The Other is for Lacan many things, also somewhat different ones at different times. It is the unconscious of the early Freud, the ‘other place’ as Freud calls i","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130146874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clinical situations with different qualities of presence will be considered focusing on what kind of interplay between analysand and analyst they may lead to. As examples, I have chosen three different clinical situations: In the first there is an interplay between the analysand’s free associations and the analyst’s ‘evenly suspended attention’. In connection with this I will discuss Bion’s concepts of ‘reverie’ and of ‘O’. In the second there is where the interaction is characterised by what Meltzer calls ‘geographical confusion’. In the third there is a ‘transference delusion’ in the psychoanalysis of breakdown as Winnicott describes it.","PeriodicalId":346715,"journal":{"name":"The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130642086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
