The rotating permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor is integrated with the mechanical components in a rotating-ball nut architecture to minimize the total length and envelope of the actuator. The motion trajectory fits the classical profile, with high-torque at low-speed which is typical for gate valve operation. A comprehensive design methodology, which embraces both the electromagnetic and mechanical design, is described. Nonlinear electromagnetic and structural finite-element analysis methods are employed to aid in the final design process. A prototype has been manufactured utilizing the design data of the optimization procedure. Test results confirm our hypothesis and calculations for the performance of the system.","PeriodicalId":344918,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129434882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analytical descriptions, design aspects, digital simulation and preliminary experimental results are presented, in order to check its operation in both power flow modes, emphasizing the transition between step-up and step-down regimes. It is proved that a simple hysteresis controller is able to assure the stability and a smooth transition between battery charging and discharging modes. The transistors driving signals are complementary which gives the advantage of using a single PWM control.","PeriodicalId":344918,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133151251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such shaft voltage may be so intense to generate breakdown of the lubricating film in the motor bearings and the associated impulsive currents damage the bearing elements thus affecting the overall ASD reliability. In order to analyze these phenomena and carry out appropriate system design, suitable numerical models are needed which accurately take into account the effects of electromagnetic wave propagation and reflection and the frequency-dependent distributed losses in the system. For this purpose, by means of a model based on a lossy multiconductor transmission lines (MTLs) approach previously developed, the prediction of the voltages and currents at critical sections of a full stator winding (of the wound type) of a three phase high power traction motor is carried out. The MTL model is studied in the time-domain by using the telegraphers' equation system with suitable boundary conditions. The phase voltage at the input terminals of the motor and the voltage across the two bearings are calculated. Moreover, the simulated input voltages are shown to be in good agreement with those obtained by measurements on a real traction drive.","PeriodicalId":344918,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116272253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Slotless PMSMs can offer a higher torque density when they have a trapezoidal back EMF and supplied with nonsinusoidal current. In this paper, a five-phase slotless PMSM with an external rotor is designed for high torque density. For this purpose, the optimal portions of the time and space harmonic components for producing the highest torque in five-phase PMSMs are calculated mathematically. A closed form analytical model for this motor is then introduced. Based on the analytical model, a multi-objective optimization using genetic algorithm (GA) technique is performed to optimize the motor back EMF waveform and achieve the highest torque density. The detailed finite element analyses are executed to validate the analytical results.","PeriodicalId":344918,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114771228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presented system is composed of a wind turbine, a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), a diode bridge rectifier, two buck converters (one for optimizing the wind power system generation and the other to satisfy load electrical requirements), a battery bank, and a variable load. The analysis is focused on low-cost and effective maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of the wind power system while satisfying the load requirements and ensuring battery protection. Dynamic simulation results of the proposed system validate its suitability for providing reliable power supply under load and wind speed variations in isolated locations.","PeriodicalId":344918,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126822318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Without a zero crossing, interrupted dc currents produce arcing and hence ac breakers would not be applicable. The z-source breaker resolves this problem because it is designed to turn off as soon as it experiences a sharp transient in current. In this paper a new design for the z-source breaker is considered so that load transients are not identified as faults. The design is also modified to accommodate bi-directionality which is required in mediumvoltage dc ship power systems. A higher-level coordinated control scheme is discussed which enables multiple breakers to coordinate and isolate the fault in a simple medium-voltage dc ship power system architecture with a central control unit.","PeriodicalId":344918,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116092259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A device to change the irradiance to 200Wm-2 is required; its implementation shan't affect the relative spectral irradiance distribution and the spatial uniformity in accordance with IEC 60904-10. To this purpose the IEC 60904-10 recommends the use of mesh filters or neutral density filters. Mesh filters are believed to be the best method for large surfaces. It would be important to compare results and uncertainties related to the different solutions and discuss about pros and cons. This paper matches the results of two laboratories that adopt two different approaches. The low irradiance performance test has gained importance due to the always extensive use of PV as integration elements on buildings.","PeriodicalId":344918,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion","volume":"207 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116425988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
