A relativistic field-emission-limited diode employing a high-transparency mesh anode is investigated via a self-consistent approach. The field emission process is described quantum-mechanically by the Fowler-Nordheim equation. The cathode plasma and surface properties are considered within the framework of the effective work function approximation. Space charge effects are described by Poisson's equation including relativistic effects. Ionization effects at the high-transparency mesh anode are ignored. The numerical calculations are carried out on a time scale much shorter than the emergence of the gap closure. The quasi-stationary state of the diode exhibits a cut-off voltage. The electric field on the cathode surface is found to be saturated in the high voltage regime and determined by the effective work function only.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. The specifications for the amplifier are listed. The technical risk factors and achievable performance for several distinct configurations, including coaxial and cylindrical cavities interacting at the fundamental and second harmonic of the cyclotron frequency, were investigated in the study. Following detailed physics designs of several different circuits and electron guns, a fundamental TE/sub 011/ coaxial mode configuration was selected as the most likely to achieve the specifications. Commercial and military applications require compact, high power amplifiers operating at frequencies from 2-45 GHz. Low-cost, compact Microwave Power Modules (MPM) have been very successful at efficiently delivering over 100 W of power for frequencies up to 18 GHz. The same design concept for the Vacuum Power Booster (VPB) of the MPM is being applied to VPBs operating in the millimeter wave frequency range. These new millimeter wave VPBs will be incorporated into Millimeter Wave Power Modules (MMPM). Extending the MPM technology, MMPMs will meet the emerging requirements for frequency coverage from 18-40 GHz. This paper describes the progress of the current developmental effort on an 18-40 GHz MMPM VPB (helix traveling wave tube), producing over 80 W of power from 18 to 35 GHz and more than 50 W of power at 40 GHz. The current VPB is a complete redesign of the earlier millimeter wave VPB effort which produced a VPB that was capable of 100 W of output power over 18-35 GHz. However, above 35 GHz, the output power declined rapidly. The current work involved a complete re-design of the aforementioned VPB to improve the power performance across the whole Ka band.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. Boeing Electron Dynamic Devices (EDD) has continued the development of a special class of low phase distortion TWTs optimized for digital communications in the 18-21 GHz frequency band. The first of these devices, the model 995H, featured extremely low AM/PM conversion of only 2/spl deg//dB. This paper reports the development of a new version, the model 995HA, wherein we have reduced the noise power of the device while continuing to maintain the low phase distortion. The 995HA has a basic electronic efficiency of 18%. Using a multi-stage depressed collector, the TWT has an overall efficiency at saturation of approximately 55%. These low efficiencies are a result of the circuit design trade-offs needed to produce the low phase distortion characteristics.","PeriodicalId":344852,"journal":{"name":"Third IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference (IEEE Cat. Results of different models are compared for calculating effective phase velocities and interaction impedances of folded waveguide slow wave circuits for use in millimeterwave and submillimeter-wave traveling wave tubes. These parameters are needed for 1D parametric model simulations of folded waveguide traveling wave tubes (FWTWTs). The models investigated include approximate analytic expressions, equivalent circuits, three-dimensional (3D) finite difference models, and 3D finite element models. The phase velocity predictions are compared with experimental measurements of dispersion in a 40-55 GHz folded waveguide circuit. The various model results are incorporated into the CHRISTINE1D code to obtain predictions of small signal gain and saturated power in a 40-55 GHz, 100 W FWTWT.
