The charge transfer process was affected by the oxide film on the stainless steel electrode surface in the early stages of redox processes. The polymer electrolytes showed a transference number of 0.2 for Li/sup +/. The conductivity of the PEG-10000 electrolyte has been determined to be 4.7/spl times/10/sup -5/ S/cm. This rather high value is attributed to tile anionic end groups increasing the polarity of the matrix.","PeriodicalId":344507,"journal":{"name":"The Twelfth Annual Battery Conference on Applications and Advances","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-01-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125007348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The \"PE\" (polyethylene) in a battery separator is actually UHMW-PE (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene). UHMW-PE has a molecular weight more than ten times that of conventional HDPE (high density polyethylene). VRLA batteries have suffered from premature capacity loss. It was believed that the loss was due to the absence of antimony in the battery grids. Recent work has indicated the beneficial effects of high tin contents on enhancing the conductivity of the grid-active material interface, increasing the mechanical properties, and reducing the corrosion rates of Pb-Ca-Sn alloys used in VRLA batteries. Additions of silver and controlled deformation processes enhance resistance to growth at elevated operating temperatures. The paper discusses how modification of composition and processing parameters can produce more stable, corrosion resistant, grid materials for VRLA batteries.","PeriodicalId":344507,"journal":{"name":"The Twelfth Annual Battery Conference on Applications and Advances","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-01-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133660780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commercial AB/sub 5/ technology is further advanced than AB/sub 2/ technology and would require less alloy, electrolyte and single cell/battery development for near term (3-5 years) applications. Tested AB/sub 2/ technology appears inadequate to meet the near term military requirements and would require a major development in the alloy to overcome the irreversible capacity loss at temperatures above 49/spl deg/C.","PeriodicalId":344507,"journal":{"name":"The Twelfth Annual Battery Conference on Applications and Advances","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-01-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133636034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prior analyses had suggested that the slow market development has resulted from reluctance to make the necessary investments on the part of both suppliers and customers. In order to confirm this and other concerns over the utility energy storage market, an assessment has been performed to estimate the potential penetration of batteries into regulated electric utilities. The estimates thus obtained confirm that the possible market for batteries on the utility side of the meter, approximately $280 million annually in 2010, is indeed smaller than indicated by the assessment of potential opportunities had suggested it might be. On the other hand, the estimates for possible market penetration on the customer side of the meter are greater than on the utility-side, particularly in the nearer-term. Of more importance than the numeric results, however, are the comments given by potential customers of utility battery energy storage, and the conclusions regarding ways to increase the attractiveness of utility battery energy storage that result from analyses of these comments.","PeriodicalId":344507,"journal":{"name":"The Twelfth Annual Battery Conference on Applications and Advances","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-01-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128644868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is well known that cells having nylon separators contribute to this loss via a hydrolysis reaction of the nylon in the potassium hydroxide electrolyte environment in the cell. The hydrolysis reaction produces lower chain organics which are oxidized by the positive electrode and oxygen. Oxidation of the organics diminishes the overcharge protection. With introduction of the Super NiCd/sup TM/ and the Magnum/sup TM/ nickel cadmium cells the nylon hydrolysis reaction is eliminated, but any reducing agent in the cell such as nickel or an organic additive can contribute to loss of overcharge protection. The present effort describes analyses made to evaluate the extent of overcharge protection loss in cells which do not have nylon hydrolysis and quantifies the diminished amount of overcharge protection loss as a result of eliminating nylon from aerospace cells.","PeriodicalId":344507,"journal":{"name":"The Twelfth Annual Battery Conference on Applications and Advances","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-01-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128075522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, they are nonflammable, nonvolatile and chemically inert, and they display wide electrochemical windows, high inherent conductivities and wide thermal operating ranges. Although these ionic liquids have excellent characteristics, the chemical and electrochemical properties of desirable battery electrode materials are not well understood in these electrolytes. The authors research has focused on rechargeable electrodes and has included work on metallic lithium and sodium anodes in buffered neutral chloroaluminate melts, graphite-intercalation electrodes in neutral chloroaluminate and nonchloroaluminate melts and silane-imidazole polymeric cathodes in acidic chloroaluminate melts.
