Using Principal Component Analysis and Panel Vector Autoregression, the research examines the roles of supply-side shocks, fiscal and monetary indicators, and trade openness. The findings indicate that supply-side factors, particularly food and oil price shocks as well as supply chain disruptions, are the primary contributors to both CPI and GDP deflator inflation. Fiscal and monetary factors exhibit limited short-term effect, while trade openness gains significance over time, especially for the GDP deflator, reflecting its broader economic impact. Variance decomposition reveals the persistent influence of supply-side factors, while trade openness plays an increasingly significant role in driving inflation in the long run. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of inflation dynamics, emphasizing the need for tailored policy and cooperated interventions to mitigate external shocks, strengthen fiscal and monetary frameworks, and enhance global trade resilience.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":34321,"journal":{"name":"Research in Globalization","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100279"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143600883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this trend has also raised concerns regarding its socio-economic impacts, particularly in relation to poverty and inequality. In this context, the emergence of financial technology (Fintech) and targeted financial inclusion initiatives has marked a significant turning point in addressing these challenges. This comprehensive study investigates the intricate dynamics between foreign bank entry, Fintech innovations, and financial inclusion, assessing their combined effects on poverty and inequality across 108 developing countries. Utilizing an advanced panel regression model backed by Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) and Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) estimation techniques, we reveal that the relationship between foreign bank entry and socio-economic outcomes is multifaceted and influenced by the moderating roles of Fintech and financial inclusion initiatives. Our findings indicate that while the initial introduction of foreign banks may initially exacerbate poverty levels, their interaction with robust financial inclusion strategies and advanced Fintech solutions can significantly alleviate poverty and inequality. The study results indicate that, for every 1% increase in the interaction of Fintech with foreign banks, poverty has decreased by approximately 0.017%. Interestingly, the presence of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) demonstrates a countervailing effect, mitigating the adverse impacts of foreign bank operations on income inequality. Moreover, we show that the effectiveness of Fintech in reducing inequality is closely linked to the extent of foreign bank penetration, highlighting a duality of effects where the advantages and disadvantages of foreign bank presence become increasingly pronounced in the era of Fintech. These insights underscore the imperative for policymakers to create an environment that not only promotes financial inclusion but also leverages Fintech innovations to optimize the opportunities presented by foreign bank entry in combating poverty and inequality.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":34321,"journal":{"name":"Research in Globalization","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100277"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143526882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of the middle class in the social sciences helps explain the origins of the modern world, with the middle class occupying a mythical place in the advent of development and modernity. Critiques of global development with respect to the middle class focus on the analytical meaning of “middle” and “class”, and the broader issue of insufficient attention to the history and context of the middle class. These issues are often most hotly debated in connection with the middle classes in middle-income countries (“emerging middles”) that may be caught in a middle-income trap. Based on a historical and ethnographic analysis of Indonesia and Malaysia as “emerging middles,” this paper argues that a qualitative and comparative approach to a lifestyle analysis of middle-class transformation strengthens understanding of global development. The central research question concerns how the state and market in Indonesia and Malaysia have shaped Muslim middle-class lifestyles. Our methodology is inspired by a “middle position”, involving combining historical/ethnographic analysis with insights from global development when discussing the “middles”, that is, middle-class groups in middle-income countries.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":34321,"journal":{"name":"Research in Globalization","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100276"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143548277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the relationship between Industry 4.0 technology advances such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their impact on the earth, environment, people, and biological ecosystems needs further consideration, particularly during pandemics like COVID-19. This paper proposes a cyber-physical Industry 5.0 framework that is compliant with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations (UN) in general and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) in particular. The framework targets three main pillars of SDGs from a technical perspective: global society, economy, and environment. It breaks down the cyber-physical system (CPS) into smaller components, linking them to each of the 17 SDGs and grouping them into broader categories. These components use four leading technologies: blockchain for secure data handling, B5G network function virtualizations, edge-cloud computing for scalable and flexible data processing and AI to deliver insights into the model’s data. This paper addresses the challenge of monitoring the indicators of 17 SDGs by utilizing Industry 5.0 advancements. It offers practical validation of the framework through use cases in energy and water management. Results demonstrate how the framework can enhance SDG monitoring’s precision, transparency, and scalability while providing stakeholders with helpful information.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":34321,"journal":{"name":"Research in Globalization","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100275"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143465441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the aim of the study is to determine the legal nature of gig contracts, identify their advantages and disadvantages, specify global trends in the digital economy in the context of ensuring the rights of workers in new forms of employment, and suggest improvements to protect the rights and freedoms of working citizens. In order to achieve the research aim, various approaches to gig economy and gig contracts are analyzed. Moreover, the characteristics of the gig work are identified within the legislative framework of the EU, USA, India, and Ukraine. Furthermore, the research examines whether gig workers are considered independent contractors. As a result, it is established that gig contract is a hybrid of a civil contract and an employment contract which combines flexibility in work and basic social guarantees. Apart from that, the legal instruments regulating gig contracts in Ukraine are studied to single out its main features and innovations. The article argues that the use of such tools is a response to the challenges associated with the labor market globalization and offers recommendations for improving the regulation of the gig economy in Ukraine based on international experience.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":34321,"journal":{"name":"Research in Globalization","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100274"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143419465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Promoting clean energy adoption and understanding the role of globalization have been identified as critical strategies to enhance environmental quality while fostering sustainable economic progress. However, empirical focus on the SSA context remains limited, particularly regarding ecological footprints as a measure of environmental sustainability. This study investigates the effects of globalization, renewable energy consumption, economic growth, trade openness, and population density on SSA nations’ ecological footprint and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions from 1994 to 2021. To ensure robust and reliable findings, advanced econometric techniques—namely Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE), Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS), and Driscoll-Kraay estimators—are employed to address heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence issues prevalent in panel data.<!--> <!-->The results identify three key findings: firstly, globalization has a double-edged effect on environmental outcomes in SSA, increasing the ecological footprint significantly but reducing CO<sub>2</sub> emissions; secondly, renewable energy consumption is a critical determinant for environmental improvement, significantly reducing both ecological footprints and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions; and finally, economic growth degrades the environment, resulting in a significant increase in both ecological footprints and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. Additionally, the Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test further uncovers bidirectional relationships between most explanatory variables and environmental indicators. Based on these findings, the study recommends that SSA countries prioritize investments in renewable energy infrastructure, adopt stricter environmental regulations, embrace green technologies to promote sustainable economic growth and leverage urbanization and infrastructure development.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":34321,"journal":{"name":"Research in Globalization","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100273"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143134485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the relationship between information and communication technology (ICT), geopolitical risks (GPR), and globalization in Pakistan from 1980 to 2022, with a focus on their impact on poverty. Using the Non-linear Autoregressive Distributive Lag (NARDL) model, the findings reveal that improvements in ICT infrastructure (ICT_POS) significantly reduce poverty, while setbacks in ICT (ICT_NEG) have minimal impact. On the other hand, rising geopolitical risks (GPR_POS) worsen poverty by reducing economic activity, investment, and trade, with negative geopolitical events (GPR_NEG) further exacerbating the issue. Positive economic globalization (EGB_POS) also plays a key role in reducing poverty, while the effects of negative globalization (EGB_NEG) remain unclear. The study recommends enhancing ICT infrastructure and accessibility, particularly in poverty-stricken regions, and addressing geopolitical risks through political stability and conflict resolution. These measures are essential for promoting economic growth and reducing poverty.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":34321,"journal":{"name":"Research in Globalization","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100272"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143350789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluates the sustainability strategies of three leading smart cities Zurich, Oslo, and Copenhagen by examining their environmental footprint, energy consumption, waste management, and air quality. The study uses a PRISMA-based systematic literature review to put together evidence from peer-reviewed articles published between 2017 and 2024. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) was used to assess the quality of the articles. The study reveals that smart mobility and waste-to-energy systems drive Zurich’s strengths in urban densification and public transportation, Oslo’s leadership in renewable energy and electric mobility, and Copenhagen’s ambitious carbon–neutral initiatives. Despite these achievements, challenges such as high implementation costs, slow technological adoption, and social equity issues persist, emphasising the complexity of achieving inclusive and sustainable urban evolution. To address these challenges, this study recommends increasing public participation through inclusive urban planning and digital platforms, strengthening policy frameworks, and funding for sustainability projects, and investing in data collection technologies to monitor real-time environmental impacts. Furthermore, fostering cross-city collaboration and addressing energy consumption challenges associated with AI and IoT are essential for scaling successful models globally. While the body of research on smart cities is growing, most studies focus on their development within individual nation-states. However, the rapidly growing smart city-related market in Emerging Asia does not allow us to overlook its heavily invested nature. In this context, the article analyses smart city projects in India and Thailand, supported by Japanese international development cooperation. The comparison of these case studies reveal that negotiations occur in discursive terms, with neither party ultimately committed to materializing the agreed-upon socio-technical future. The article argues that, in Japanese international cooperation, the concept of smart cities is more of a showcase than a reality, masking the power struggle between donor and host countries to advance their national interests within the imagined geography of the Indo-Pacific. This international perspective adds new insights to existing research on domestic smart city efforts. Smart cities cannot be taken at face value; additionally, its ideological efficacy must be properly acknowledged.
