Based on the test results, it puts forward that there are evident differences in ice accretion speed, ice density and ice structure between energized insulators and nonenergized insulators. The electrical field stress has an important influence on ice type and ice structure accrued on the insulators. Both flashover voltage and withstand voltage of the insulators covered with ice at an energized condition are higher than that at a nonenergized condition. This paper discusses a framework for applying the mode, mean, standard deviation, skew and kurtosis (advanced summary numbers or ASN for short) to on-line partial discharge (PD) data for the identification of individual PD mechanisms out of a group of multiple discharge mechanisms acting on a set of stator windings. The study shows how simple trending of these advanced summary numbers can help establish relative increases in the individual discharge mechanisms and consequently establish which PD sources constitute the predominant increase in partial discharge activity as evaluated via a normal NQN or Qm trend. The first step has been accomplished by issuing the IEEE 400 document, which is also referred to as the Omnibus document and serves as the umbrella for all field test methods to be covered under individual standards or user guides within the 400 series of documents. The IEEE 400.1 document will become the new test document covering all field DC test methods. The IEEE 400.2 will address very low frequency AC field test methods, also referred to as VLF test methods. VLF testing is being considered as the safe alternative to DC Hipot testing of XLPE and mixed cables, which will cause premature failures in this type of cable because of the known problem of induced space charges. Typical insulation designs for distribution feeders usually are based on 1.2/50 /spl mu/s lightning impulse, while insulator behavior under steep front short duration (SFSD) impulse is not concerned. Comparing with lightning impulse, SFSD impulse is more severe and destructive to insulator because of its high voltage magnitude. To study the insulator behavior under different kinds of impulses, both standard lightning impulses and SFSD impulses are generated and applied on selected 15 kV polymer suspension insulators. The generated standard lightning impulse has 1.2 /spl mu/s front and 50 /spl mu/s on the tail to half value of the voltage impulse. The generated SFSD impulse in this study has 60 ns front and less than 200 ns of the tail. In order to measure CFO voltage under SFSD impulses, up and down method as in lightning impulses is developed and used. For each kind of impulse, the CFO voltage and V-t characteristic for 15 kV polymer suspension insulators are evaluated under dry and wet condition with both negative and positive polarity impulses. In this paper we discuss partial discharge inception voltage (PDFV) characteristics of twisted-pair samples under long-time repetitive impulses using optical and electrical PD detection methods. For PDIV measurement, we adopted step-by-step and continuous rise of peak voltage of impulse. The repetitive frequency is 500 Hz. The result suggests that PD can occur even after a long period of time of repetitive impulses. If transformers are subjected to rapidly changing overload conditions, insulation materials can see high temperatures leading to unexpected aging. Therefore, we have been conscious of developing a transformer that is more thermally stable than conventional types. To measure temperature distribution in the winding of conventional and newly designed transformers, temperature sensors were installed for direct reading of the transformer oil and conductor temperatures of transformers. We also conducted accelerated aging tests for these transformers. The measurement data was utilized in the design of the hybrid insulation system. A study of literature indicates that trapped charges play a significant role in the initiation and propagation of electrical tree channels. Experiments have been conducted in which charges have been modified by subjecting the samples aged by Partial Discharges (PD) to thermally stimulated discharging (TSD) procedure. Our earlier results have indicated that treeing could be characterized by PDs. The parameters of Weibull distribution are affected by the removal of charges by TSD. The parameters of Weibull distribution are correlated to one another and with time of aging. The parameters also respond to TSDs. Several Weibull plots, TSD curves and a number of microphotographs have been studied. Such exposed insulation is reported to develop cracks and become brittle within a few months of installation. Experimental investigation with accelerated UV irradiation in the laboratory revealed significant aging effect on the mechanical properties of XLPE core insulation material.
