The present study was undertaken to examine the extent to which Burundians living in two major cities of the country use ICT tools and resources to improve their English autonomously. In doing so, the study first investigated the situations in which they need to use English and their current level of English regarding the different aspects. Adopting a descriptive research design, the study used a convenience sample of 239 subjects who were invited to respond to a questionnaire survey and participate in a two-day training on how to use ICT to learn English autonomously. The collected data were analysed using SPSS version 22. The findings indicated that participants still not exploit to the fullest the benefits of ICT to learn English autonomously. Indeed, 84.9% of the participants do not know what a podcast is and 66.1% of them report that they have no language learning applications on their smartphones. Besides, more than 60% of the participants have not yet tried to learn English using internet. Yet, they feel the need to use English in different situations reflecting a vast range of domains such as Medicine, Law, Economy, etc. Findings also showed that the majority of the participants have a weak or very weak level regarding the different language aspects. Given these findings, it can be concluded that there is a need to raise awareness of Burundians to use ICT tools to learn English by themselves.","PeriodicalId":33956,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages and Language Teaching","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136079056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Digital literacy has evolved beyond being a mere technical skill; it has fundamentally transformed the way learners approach their education. In response to this shift, many English learners, including secondary school students, now rely heavily on advanced utilities and web-based tools to create and share meaning. This paradigm shift has not only influenced the curriculum for English students at SMA IT Abhur Mataram but has also been guided by the global Digital literacy competency framework set forth by UNESCO. The approach taken in this study employs a graphical representation to subjectively depict the advanced levels of English language learning. It identifies seven key areas of higher education skills that play a crucial role in English learning at Abhu Mataram High School. These areas encompass proficiency in equipment and software, mastery of data and information, effective communication and collaboration, content generation using computers, ensuring online security, problem-solving abilities, and career-related skills. In summary, the digital literacy standards established by UNESCO for the broader digital society can be effectively applied within the context of English language learning. These seven areas of computer skills, which are integral to the learning process at Abhur Islamic School Mataram, are systematically integrated into preparatory, intermediate, and concluding exercises, ensuring a comprehensive and up-to-date approach to English education in the digital age.","PeriodicalId":33956,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages and Language Teaching","volume":"913 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136079057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A descriptive case study was the design of the study, for it acknowledges the sociocultural viewpoint of reading instruction which is characterized by the roles culturally produced mediating artifacts (textbooks) have on students learning opportunities. To this end, reading comprehension questions were the data collected from grade eleven and grade twelve EFL textbooks which were selected drawing on the purposeful sampling technique. A checklist of comprehension sub-skills modified from Barrett’s reading comprehension taxonomy was the data collection instrument. The data collected were analyzed using the descriptive content analysis method. Along with the two researchers, the study involved an inter-rater in order to augment the reliability of the results. He was selected among the English staff based on a random sampling technique. The findings of the research indicated that the comprehension questions of the instructional materials are characterized by the initiations of a preponderance of text-based comprehension sub-skills in general and recognition of comparison and details sub-skills in particular. Additionally, the textbooks do not ask all sub-skills of the comprehension levels except those residing in the literal comprehension. The study also found out that the questions do not teach the comprehension levels in line with their difficulty sequence. Based on the findings, it is stipulated that material designers of grades eleven and twelve EFL textbooks should keep the order of reading comprehension categories and balance the distribution of sub-skills within the comprehension levels while preparing comprehension questions for grades eleven and twelve EFL textbooks.","PeriodicalId":33956,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages and Language Teaching","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136079090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the MTP in Sumbawa Besar City. Through this study, we sought evidence of lessons learnt from the field. To conduct the study, researchers employed a modified version of Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model. Three out of four postulates derived from the model were used to probe the phenomenon under investigation, i.e. (1) teachers’ reaction, (2) learning endeavor and (3) application of knowledge/skills gained. The fourth postulate regarding the assessment of students’ achievement was not included in the study as the MTP program just commenced in the research site. The study employed a qualitative research approach with a multiple-case design. Participants of this study were eight alumni of MTP teachers coming from four different schools. Data were collected through interviews, observations and study of related documents. The data collected were analyzed thematically through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing and verification. Results of the study show that participants of the study benefitted from participating in the MTP program although they underwent various route of transformational learning. Regardless of disorienting problem in the beginning of the program implementation, participants were able to maintain their new skills and knowledge to improve their own teaching performance and other teachers in the impacted schools. The participants experienced transformation of learning and behavioral change after participating in the long and exhausting MTP program.","PeriodicalId":33956,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages and Language Teaching","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136078675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
