{"title":"ONYM PLAY AS AN ELEMENT OF HATE SPEECH IN THE CONTEXT OF RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN WAR","authors":"I. Bozhko","doi":"10.18524/2414-0627.2022.29.262395","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18524/2414-0627.2022.29.262395","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of the article is to analyze onymic lexical units that fall into the category of hate speech in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The object of research is (quasi)onyms, which are a result of onym play and are used as elements of hate speech. The subject of research is word-forming and semantic means of creating (quasi)onyms. To achieve the objectives of the study, a number of methods were used, primarily descriptive and structural methods. Contextual analysis was used to clarify the meaning of the studied lexical units. We also used the methods of word-formation and stylistic analysis. The article confirms the previously formed ideas about the onym play and the hate speech enriched with new observations, in particular about the onym play at the level of graphics. Basing on the sample, we demonstrated the formal structure of (quasi)onyms and their semantics; it is clarified how the aggressive semantics of the components of (quasi)onyms achieves aggressiveness of expression. The onym play through which hate speech is realized is manifested through contamination (involving obscene components and components that name local realities associated with stereotypes); imitative (phonics) word formation; word-formation based on appellatives and verbs; metaphorization. It is appropriate to distinguish between anthroponymic and toponymic quasi-onyms, as these categories convey thematically different directions of aggression. Anal-fecal and sexual invective strategies are implemented through quasi-onyms. The morpheme structure of quasi-names also includes lexical units that are stereotypically associated with national culture in a negative sense. A group that nominates and implements elements of hate speech is not always familiar with the toponymy of the group to which the hate speech is directed, so sometimes, real toponymy (and anthroponymy) is used in the context of aggression. Prospects for the study include clarification of the terms quasi-onym, quasi-toponym, quasi-anthroponym, which denote the result of the onym play. The purpose of the article is to analyze the effectiveness of traditional pedagogical technologies of professional language training of future medical workers, and to review main problems of language perception, typical difficulties and directions for changing teaching methodology in order to improve learning outcomes and to ensure their high quality. During the research the following tasks were solved: teaching methods were described, the analysis of the newest pedagogical technologies was made, and recommendations on improving teaching methods for language disciplines in higher medical educational institution (HMEI) were given. The author has analyzed functions and features of teaching methodology for Latin and Ukrainian languages as disciplines of the social-humanitarian cycle of HMEI that provide the language competence formation of future professionals. The changes occurring in the public life of Ukraine determine the search for new approaches and requirements for the training of highly qualified specialists. The main task of medical educational institutions is to create conditions for the development of the student’s personality, his professional speech, as one of the main components of professional competencies of the future medical worker. The material of the article will provide an opportunity to improve the methodology and practice in teaching these courses. Latin language has a special function in medical sphere; its knowledge provides communication for specialists not only within the country but also internationally. It is concluded that, despite the loss of its basic communicative function, Latin still has a significant historical, cultural and educational significance. The object of study are textbooks, study guides and educational complexes intended for remote online learning of various foreign languages with different contingents of students. The subject of the research is both positive and negative experience of domestic and foreign methodologists regarding the optimization of techniques and methods of foreign languages distance online learning. In the process of studying this problem, such methods of collecting and analyzing empirical information were used: a natural experiment, modeling, a method of qualitative characterization of the educational material, psychological-pedagogical and structural methods, as well as a method of functional-pragmatic analysis and a descriptive method. In the course of the conducted research, the following conclusions were made. The general “online technology and digitization” of the educational process is, firstly, an adaptive reaction of modern society, in which human life and health have become a priority, to emerging security threats; secondly, it is the result of finding ways to reduce material and time costs related to the acquisition of knowledge through the use of the latest technical developments in the field of informatization and communication. A significant role in technological updating is assigned to the adaptation of universal innovations to the methodical traditions of each country, where the spheres of online language education have expanded dramatically. The importance of improving the qualifications of teachers and students, training them in effective ways of working with the latest online educational technologies is growing. {"title":"FROM REALISM TO MODERNISM: THE BOUNDARI IN THE PROSE OF LESYA UKRAINKA","authors":"O. O. The purpose of the article was to trace the regular changes in the style, subject matter, form and content of Lesya Ukrainka’s prose and highlight the main trends of the transition from realism to modernism. The internal modifications of the genre, which indicate certain changes in the writer’s technique, in her worldview, have been studied. A departure from the instructions of Olena Pchilka, who still remained on the positions of realism in her own work, was traced. Attention is drawn to Lesya Ukrainka’s early stories and their emphasized “fabulousness” (figurative side). The dynamics of worldview are observed in late stories, where the emphasis is shifted to nuanced images and characters of the works. The subject of research is the prose of Lesya Ukrainka (stories, images). The object of the research is the study of the stylistic direction of the stories (title, genre modification, changes in the structure of the works from early stories to later ones) and thematic innovation (theme of abuse, the theme of teenage friendship, the theme of loneliness in a crowd). In addition, the aspects of modernist techniques (images of feelings, moods of characters due to fragmented phrases, incompleteness, lack of resolution, the use of psychological analysis, philosophical fragments, intellectual vocabulary) were also investigated. Structural-typological, phenomenological methods of research were used. The article analyzed the internal orientation of early prose of the beginning of the 20th century. Signs of neo-romanticism and impressionism on the basis of realism and early modernism are revealed in the researched stories. One such research center is the School of Communication Studies at Kent State University (UK). Its brilliant representative, the world-famous Professor Dominic A. Infante, together with his colleagues and students, has developed a programmatic line of research and theory of argumentativeness and verbal aggressiveness inspiring many young communication scholars in the field. The object of the article is verbal aggression as a component of conflict communication. The subject is phrasemes denoting a certain type of verbal aggression, selected through a continuous survey of the academic dictionary of phraseology of the Ukrainian. Purpose: to identify and characterize the manifestations of verbal aggression (based on the typology of Dominic A. Infante) in Ukrainian phrasemics. The stated goal motivates the solution of the following tasks: 1) to outline the basic components of the terminological apparatus of the theory of verbal aggression in studies of Dominic A. Infante, his colleagues and students (‘verbal aggressiveness’, ‘verbal aggression’, ‘physical aggression’, ‘manifestation of verbal aggression’); 2) to describe the types of verbal aggression recorded in Ukrainian phrasemics, illustrating a specific communicative situation. Ukrainian phrasemics records all types of verbal aggression proposed by Dominic A. Infante: attack, curse, teasing, ridicule, threat, swearing, nonverbal emblems. A thorough analysis of the source base of the study shows that: а) the verbal aggression contains a negative evaluation nomination and serves as a marker of negative emotions towards the opponent (hostility, dislike, unfriendliness, dissatisfaction, anger, condemnation, evil, etc.); b) the verbal aggression actualizes severe / sharp attack, sensitive attack, attack with excessive demands; sharp condemnation with an ominous wish of failure, disaster, all evil; ridicule with caustic remarks, insulting words; calling someone names, giving nicknames; a promise to cause some evil, trouble; rude, unfriendly words and expressions and the spread of rumors, etc.; c) the attack correlates with swearing / quarreling and is accompanied by sharp, offensive words, condemnation, reproach with varying degrees of intensification; d) the threat is positioned as a warning, a warning about the transition to physical aggression; e) the main nonverbal sign is the look. The object of the study is anthroponyms as the basic components of the onymic system. The subject of the study is the specificity of terminological designation, definition and typology of anthroponyms in Ukrainian and foreign sources. Methods of research are predetermined by the purpose and tasks put in the article. The main ones are comparative analyses, observation method, analysis of the scientific literature, method of classification, descriptive, comparative, and historical methods as well as methods of generalization and abstraction. They make it possible to clarify the concept of anthroponym, to define the specificity of functioning in different resources, to draw conclusions on the typology of anthroponyms. The term «anthroponym» belongs to the category of international and is firmly established in scientific linguistic communication for proper names of people. The chronology of its appearance in foreign and domestic sources varies, but can be most generally described as the second half of the twentieth century. Presence in the most authoritative terminology registers and dictionaries has contributed to popularization of the term «anthroponym» among researches of different countries and has supported its relevance for many decades. The analysed English-speaking and Ukrainian lexicographic works are mostly unanimous in defining anthroponym as a name of a human being, but we find particularly valuable more informative definitions, which contain information on the function and peculiarities of anthroponyms or represent a typology of antroponyms. The anthroponym typologies proposed by the authors vary considerably in quantitative and qualitative parameters, making it difficult to compare them with the corresponding material in Englishlanguage sources. This study belongs to the new paradigm of narratological investigations, which is the evidence of its timeliness, enhanced by the social significance of Britain's withdrawal from the European Union. The object matter of the study are small stories of Brexit in the Ukrainian segment of the social network \"Facebook\", its subject matter being the ways and means of storytelling, indications of the place and time of the story and the participants in the storytelling situation. The aim of the analysis is to examine small stories about Brexit according to these parameters. The analysis proposed in this article is based on the method of A. Georgakopoulou, which consists of three distinguishable and interconnected levels of analysis: 1) ways of telling, 2) sites, 3) tellers. The research methods used here are discursive and contextual analysis. The objectives of the work are: first, to identify verbal and non-verbal means used in small stories about Brexit; second, to determine how the place and time of the story are actualized, and third, to determine what linguistic means are used to actualize tellers. The sample includes 78 small stories of Brexit, which have been obtained by continuous selection from the Ukrainian segment of the social network \"Facebook\" in 20162021. Small stories of Brexit in the Ukrainian segment of the social network \"Facebook\" are characterized by a variety of verbal and semiotic means, management of interaction during the story, intertextual links to precedent texts and situations. The most common genre of small stories of Brexit is breaking news, although this subgenre can hybridize by combining breaking news with projections. The influence of personal traits of an preceptor-economist on the formation of linguistic personality of an emerging economist is determined. Scientific works are analyzed, which allow to define a linguistic personality as a personality expressed in language and through language; as a person who is a native speaker and communicator, a holder of communicative competence. There are three levels of language proficiency: verbal-semantic, linguocognitive, pragmatic, the boundaries between which are quite fragile, vague; they also determine the stages of formation of linguistic personality. The requirements to the economic competence of a specialist are determined, which ensure the appropriate level of language proficiency, as lexical units of the language system occupy a priority place in professional speech of economic specialists: economic terminology of narrow and wide use, professionalisms, socially marked vocabulary, etc. The intralinguistic reasons for the dynamic penetration of lexical borrowings into professional speech of modern economists in connection with the nominative necessity are analyzed. With all due respect to foreign language culture, economic experts themselves are increasingly advocating the ecology of professional language, trying to use at least sporadically synonymous Ukrainian equivalents to the borrowings. Important communicative features of professional speech have been determined: content, accuracy, consistency, concise presentation of thoughts, provability, correctness and appropriateness of the terms use, information saturation, purity of speech, expressiveness of diction, melodiousness. Thus, indicators of general cultural, linguistic, terminological competence of an economist are deep knowledge of features of economic terminology, theory and practice of speech influence, attentive attitude to specific vocabulary and professional terms. Formation of the psycholinguistic profile of the personality of a novice economist depends on the fundamental language training, example and influence of the personal traits of the preceptoreconomist. The purpose is to actualize the linguistic heritage of S. Karavanskyi as a basis for further prescriptive linguistic research. Among the tasks is the analysis of spelling and lexicographic codification in the works of a linguist. The object of our study is the linguistic heritage of Sviatoslav Karavanskyi, who after more than 30 years of Moscow-Stalin concentration camps and 37 years of American emigration carried, preserved and motivated the specific linguistic norm of the constantly destroyed Ukrainian language and its native speakers. The subject of our research is spelling and lexicographic codification of the first third of the XX-XXI century in the works of S. Karavanskyi. When processing the material, we use the analytical and descriptive method. Conclusions and prospects of the study. Spelling issues in the works of S. Karavanskyi have a substantiated ideological basis, which is to reflect the spelling of specific rather than assimilative (“destructive”) features caused by the occupation and totalitarian regime of the 30-80s of the XX century. Spelling assimilation and the necessity to remove it is to change the phonetic-morphological and syntactic structure of the Ukrainian language, in particular phonetic, morphological, word-formation and syntactic changes. The lexicographic codification of the linguist is evidenced by his two fundamental works: “Practical Dictionary of Synonyms of the Ukrainian Language” and “RussianUkrainian Dictionary of Complex Vocabulary”. The main methodological basis for compiling these dictionaries is the specificity of Ukrainian vocabulary in its resistance to codification in dictionaries of “pseudo-language” imposed on Ukrainians during the ethnocide policy and exposing Soviet lexicography as the main “tool of Ukrainian linguicide”. {"title":"PECULIARITIES OF NATURAL TOPOGRAPHIC NAMES FUNCTIONING IN UKRAINIAN SPELLS","authors":"E. Peculiarities of topographical and toponymic vocabulary functioning in the most ancient texts of ritual folklore are deduced. It has been determined that the spells reflect different geographical areas with the help of 7 structural-and-semantic types of topolexes; their artistic-and-aesthetic focus has been identified. Geographical names as culturally loaded onyms in folklore texts carry a huge layer of culturally significant information in their semantics. In this case the name is an abridged history of the inner life and spirit of the people. The cultural component of the language at the vocabulary level (hence the proper names) to some extent fixes the culture of the people - the native speakers, reflects the inherent worldview of the people. It has been proved that the disclosure of the functional load and mechanisms of onomastic vocabulary in folklore texts will contribute to the clarification and deepening of the theoretical foundations of onomastics as a linguistic science. Each geographical name, entering folklore texts, is combined with a complex range of relations that can be restored only on the basis of a comprehensive systematic analysis of all manifestations of spiritual and material culture of the people, taking into account regional data distribution and knowledge of typologically related cultures. One of the toponyms’ functions in the texts of the spells is a targeted one, but this category of proper names in folklore texts performs not only a nominative function, but often acquires a generalized abstract meaning, adds other semes to their lexicographically fixed meaning, which implicitly contain people's attitudes to the world.
