In order to fabricate a compact power supply, it is necessary to reduce transformer volume by increasing switching frequency of the power supply. However, a step-up ratio of the transformer in the high voltage DC power supply could not be indefinitely increased due mainly to self-resonance by stray capacitance and leakage inductance. Therefore, the pulse transformer should be carefully designed to fulfill its function in the power supply. A high frequency and high voltage pulse transformer is designed, fabricated, and tested. Switching frequency of the transformer is 100 kHz. Input and output voltages of the transformer are 250 V and 4 kV, respectively. Normal operation power of the transformer is 3 kW. Maximum allowed volume of the transformer is 400 cm/sup 3/. The transformer is installed in a metal box that has nominal operation temperature of 85 degree centigrade. The transformer and other high voltage components in the box are molded with silicon RTV that has a very low thermal conductivity. Calculated and measured results of various parameters such as transformer loss, temperature rise, leakage inductance, distributed capacitance, and hysterisis characteristics are presented. Over modulation of an AM, RF signal, produces a pulse whose frequency is the same as the applied audio modulation frequency. In its final form, the transmitter had an unmodulated carrier wave of 3.5 Watts with a modulated output of 45 Watts PEP into a 50 ohm load. Rise and fall times of the pulse envelope were approximately 1 microsecond each. Pulse rate capabilities were in excess of 160 kHz. Single frequency, square wave modulation produces no distortion of the audio when demodulated. Most, but not all, of the RF power in this transmitter is shifted to the side bands. The residual carrier eliminates the additional internal oscillator and mixer circuits necessary for side band receivers. The extreme levels of over modulation produce a demodulated wave of very high intensity which is not carrier wave power dependent. High harmonic levels, in conjunction with a variable audio input frequency, produces a wide spectrum of impedances which can be used in therapeutic applications. The output signal is extremely difficult to jam and has potential military applications. Our focus in this paper is the development of a capability to explore compact Marx generator (CMG) devices, where we arbitrarily define a CMG to be an apparatus consuming less than 0.5 m/sup 3/ (excluding the charging and control systems). We report the development of a laboratory system that incorporates a shielded test stand with battery-powered high voltage charging supplies and a computer based control system with a graphical user interface. One is multipoints dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor, the other is pulse streamer discharge (PSD) reactor. In the former reactor, the 2 mm thickness Pyrex glass plate is used as the dielectric barrier. The DBD reactor is driven by IGBT pulse modulator which can supply the 10 kV pulse voltage to the reactor with repetition rate of 2.5 kpps. The co-axial cylinder type discharge chamber is used as the PSD reactor which is driven by the pulse power generator with semiconductor opening switches (SOS). The SOS pulse generator can supply both polarity of 30 kV pulse with 300 pps repetition rate. The DBD reactor energy cost for NO removal from simulated gas (N/sub 2/:O/sub 2/=9:1, initial NO concentration = 200 ppm) is obtained to 12 g/kWh at 65% removal in 5 l/min. gas flow rate. The energy cost of the PSD reactor is almost 12 g/kWh at 25% NO removal efficiency. The DBD reactor was applied to 20 kVA diesel engine generator exhaust gas treatment. The contained NO/sub x/ (NO+NO/sub 2/) is abated from 70 to 40 ppm at no-load to the generator, and from 340 to 300 ppm. at 50 A load. North Star Research reports on the development of several products that employ the topological erection of voltages using a Marx generator stacking arrangement of lower voltage IGBT devices. The configuration does not place the semiconductors in a series arrangement, thereby eliminating a failure mode wherein the loss of a single device would over-stress the stack of IGBT parts. A plasma source ion implantation (PSII) modulator has been built using this technology development and provides 30 kV, 400 A, 1-50 /spl mu/sec variable pulse widths, and operates at 7.5 kW of average power. The pulse high-voltage capacitors, C=130 uF and V=100 kV, were applied as the primary source. The serial high power tetrode was the system regulator (MOD/REG), and by regulating the tetrode's voltage drop can obtain steady output voltage. The MOD/REG is being constructed at present. Here, the system structure of MOD/REG is introduced. Especially, the circuit analysis software PSPICE and MATLAB were used to simulate the whole system by modeling the system. The paper also gives the simulative waveforms and measuring waveforms in the resistive dummy load. Then the waveforms' comparison shows that the experimental performance is much closed to the simulative result. It was measured by the Michelson interferometer using He-Ne laser. Ozonizer has a configuration of thin dielectric material plate (Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/) which is put between a stripe shaped high voltage electrode and grounded electrode. In this experiments oxygen gas with flow rate of 1.5 l/min was used for ozone generation, and ozone concentration of 610 ppm was obtained at discharge power of 0.8 W. The present NLC envisions a solid state induction modulator design to drive up to 8 klystrons to 500 kV for 3(S) at 120 PPS with one modulator (>1000 megawatt pulse, 500 kW average). A prototype modulator is under construction, which will power 4 each 5045 SLAC klystron to greater than 380 kV for 3(S) (>600 megawatt pulse, >300 kW ave.). The prototype induction modulator utilizes a three-turn secondary to produce the 500 kV pulse. The design, installation and testing of the three turn secondary and its effect on rise time and fault conditions is discussed.
