Various delay channel environment can cause the early/late arrival packet loss without actual packet loss. To overcome time-variant dynamics of transmission channels for IP telephone services, an adaptive playout-buffer scheduling is proposed. Previous playout-buffer schedulers focused on eliminating delay variation effects regardless of the quality of service (QoS). The proposed metric provides a minimum playout-buffer size, simultaneously meeting a desired QoS. The minimum buffer size is desirable because of the impact of the end-to-end delay on the perceived speech quality. The optimal buffer size is analytically calculated by exploiting the stochastic distribution of the packet arrival intervals.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":" 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113950604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Security in cognitive radio networks (CRN) is even more challenging. This is because a CRN consists of cognitive radios (CR) which have many more functions and processes to account for, such as sensing, geolocation, spectrum management, access to the policy database etc. Each of these functions and processes need to be assessed for potential vulnerabilities and security mechanisms need to be provided for protection of not just the secondary users of the spectrum but also the primary users or the incumbents. This paper discusses the potential security vulnerabilities and the remediations for the same in a CRN with an example using a commercial IEEE 802.22 standard. Due to the unique characteristics of the CRs in a CRN, enhanced security mechanisms are required. The security mechanisms in CRN are divided into several security sub-layers which protect non-cognitive as well as cognitive functions of the system and the interactions between the two. This paper describes these security features as incorporated into the IEEE 802.22 standard. It is possible to apply similar security mechanisms for a military CRN.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114731121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result of incorporating geosynchronous satellites into the design (e.g., extended propagation delays, power, cell size), modifications to the 3GPP procedures, such as moving control of cell selection, are needed. The operational scenarios related to acquisition and mobility are dictated by the operational mode of a MUOS radio - point-to-point, group, or Emissions Control (EMCON) - as well as whether a MUOS service (e.g., ‘voice call’) is currently active. This paper describes the operational implications of mobility and acquisition on MUOS radios, and the design challenges that are met to satisfy Customer anticipated levels of service. In order to support the three operational modes with common procedures, the MUOS design for acquisition and mobility has moved control of the mobility event from the radio (standard 3GPP operation) to the Ground Segment (GS); resulting in message and data flow modifications specific to MUOS. Additionally, whereas 3GPP operation does not notify users of a mobility event, the MUOS does provide that knowledge for the user involved in a mobility event as well as other users impacted (e.g., the talker in a group call informs the listeners of its mobility event).","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"392 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124535845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nonlinear distortion introduced by an OFDM signal through practical amplifiers can further degrade the system performance. Due to the limited bandwidth in the radio frequency spectrum, it is impossible that wireless communication systems can operate in an environment which is free from all interference such as narrowband interference (NBI). Hence, it is important to understand how an OFDM system performs when it is subject to NBI interference. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (MQAM) OFDM system which is subject to nonlinear high power amplifiers (HPAs) and NBI in a Rayleigh fading channel. In order to reduce the nonlinear distortion caused by HPAs, we propose a new companding technique to reduce the PAPR and a novel receiver structure to minimize the degradation effects from the decompander when the OFDM system operates in Rayleigh fading channel. For the purpose of simulation, we extend the analytical model to be in compliance with the IEEE 802.11n standard. The theoretical results are verified with the simulation.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128195972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Information Management Services (IMSs) based on publish-subscribe-query services have emerged as an important enabler of tactical information dominance in combined tactical and enterprise military situations. IMSs support information brokering and dissemination between decoupled information producers and consumers, for both future (publish-subscribe) and historical (publish-archive-query) information. To support operations in dynamic environments, IMSs require Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities to ensure prioritized delivery of mission-critical information, to mediate conflicting demands for information brokering and dissemination resources in constrained situations, and to adapt IMS operations to changing missions, roles, and priorities. This paper describes a set of QoS management services, QoS Enabled Dissemination (QED), that provide policy driven, dynamic, aggregate QoS management across the users of IMSs. The paper describes the QED prototype implementation and experimental results illustrating the improvement of QED over a non-QoS enabled IMS baseline.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121763348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, there is an ever increasing need to provide system-of-systems (SoS) analysis tools to assist in evaluating a military combat team's survivability, lethality, sustainment and logistics. Evaluation of networked communications as part of this analysis is often overlooked due to the complexity and scope of the communications problem. A team lead by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is developing net-centric SoS modeling and analysis capabilities by integrating high-fidelity networked communications modeling with a large-scale, SoS simulation and analysis tool. The combined modeling approach brings together the strengths of each tool to achieve complex, net-centric SoS analysis. This paper describes the combined modeling and simulation(M&S) capability and presents example analysis results from the completed phase-one effort. Experiments conducted show the effect of functional communications on a combat team's survivability at a SoS-level. The result is an approach that bridges the gap in high-fidelity communications modeling with logistics and survivability for large-scale SoS problems.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131356570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since DSSS allows for packet capture in the presence of other nearby transmissions, multiple-access interference is less detrimental to network performance. We design a new transmission scheduling protocol that takes advantage of the multiple-access capabilities of DSSS through two key features. First, the transmission schedule employs a more aggressive spatial reuse policy. Second, our protocol reduces overhead by accounting for fewer terminals in the scheduling because only the strongest interferers disrupt packet reception. Transmissions use both common and transmitter-oriented spreading codes to support reliable neighbor discovery and broadcast capability, respectively. Spreading factors may be adapted to increase throughput of unicast traffic on links with high SINR. Through simulations, we evaluate the performance of the transmission scheduling protocol in mobile and stationary scenarios.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132058057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
