Most current works however provide partial solutions by only considering individual aspects like event detection, temporal calculi or signal based control. There is thus a need to define a new problem of situation based control which supports symbolic reasoning, strong temporal support and explicit inclusion of domain knowledge to undertake intelligent control in dynamic environments. We describe the problem from a traditional control theoretic perspective and show how it can be handled in practice using the semantics of ‘Situation Calculus’. The motivations for future research as well as the research challenges have been identified. The use of the proposed approach to support emerging cyber-physical applications is demonstrated through the example of a multimodal tele-presence application involving selection of appropriate sensor and actuator parameters based on exogenous user actions.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"498 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134090893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These include more affordable network nodes; reduction in development, acquisition, training, and sustainment expenditures; improved terminal interoperability; and, with modular integration, the ability to more easily incorporate future networking technology. This paper discusses the benefits, needs, and considerations associated with COTS technology integration into MILSATCOM terminals. TSAT terminal analysis performed by the JTEO is presented as an example effort in COTS integration, followed by an overview of the pros and cons of COTS integration, including lessons learned. A broad, framework-driven approach is suggested to guide commercial technology integration in MILSATCOM terminals.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134318448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can be enhanced as a Space-Division based CSMA (namely, SD-CSMA) by using multi-antenna techniques, which allows concurrent link communications in the network. In this paper, we present a MAC design that can adaptively switch between CSMA and SD-CSMA in multi-antenna based Ad Hoc Networks. We first investigate the CSMA mode and the SD-CSMA mode by considering several practical constraints from MIMO physical layer, which include imperfect channel estimation, modulation and coding scheme, MMSE detection, power constraint and packet length. We then propose a selection criterion that adaptively switches between CSMA and SD-CSMA based on current wireless channels among nodes. Simulation results verify that the proposed design can outperform both the CSMA mode and the SD-CSMA mode in terms of aggregate throughput","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131519310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to adding capability in the X-band and a Ka-band, WGS adds a unique digital channelizer. The digital channelizer greatly increases the flexibility of the WGS payload over previous satellite systems. It allows an individual 125 MHz transponder to be decomposed into as many as 48 sub-channels, each of which can be given its own transfer gain, be cross-banded between X-band and Ka-band, be combined with other sub-channels (fanned-in), or be duplicated in multiple downlinks (fanned-out). However, with increased flexibility comes the following planning challenge. HIF creates intelligent gateways to rapidly and autonomously adapt the flow of information content to the changing mission needs and network characteristics. HIF employs a MANET Management Protocol (termed MMP) which enables a novel light-weight publish/subscribe mechanism. Interoperability is provided with upper echelon networks running legacy directory and session announcement protocols. MANET users can discover multicast information sourced in the backbone network and subscribe to only subset of the information that they need. HIF enables the MANET nodes to avoid being swamped by too much data - extraneous information not needed by the end-user is filtered by the HIF agents. Adaptation is triggered by QoS messages derived from ongoing application performance and network monitoring. We have implemented HIF in a laboratory testbed using the MANE emulation system, and successfully demonstrated it's publish/subscribe and filtering capabilities for real-time multimedia and tactical situational awareness applications. The experiments confirmed our conjecture that if adaptive and intelligent content filtering is performed, the end-user performance (and packet loss and latency) becomes significantly and consistently better during the periods when MANET nodes are subjected to overload conditions.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130858086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The physical environment is modeled with log-distance path loss model, log-normal shadowing model and rayleigh fading model. Interference is a prominent problem in multi-user dense wireless network. The proposed algorithm will co-operatively reduce inter-node interference in the network by restricting the node to increase its transmission power indiscriminately. Further, most of the routing algorithms only utilize bi-directional links. Therefore, uni-directional links can be a major source of interference. The algorithm will try to either prevent such uni-directional links or convert them into bi-directional links to route packet if necessary. Therefore with the changing network conditions and the physical environment, the proposed algorithm decides on an optimum coverage area for a node to reduce interference, provide better link qualities, improve spatial reuse, lower number of retransmissions thus improving network capacity and energy efficiency i.e. battery capacity. We will show that the algorithm provides stronger connected and more reliable network improving network performance. It reduces fluctuation in node connectivity even significantly reducing the time node is completely disconnected from the network due to changes in the network and the environment.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131047077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In principle, TDMA offers superior performance as well as better capacity guarantees compared to CSMA/CA. In practice, however, the need to provide network-wide synchronization without centralized control, and to accommodate mobility makes TDMA very hard to design and implement. Consequently, CSMA/CA variants are generally preferred. While the proliferation of real-time multimedia applications demands a protocol with TDMA-like features, the problem of doing so in a practically viable manner remains unsolved. We present SITA (Sync-less Impromptu Time-Divided Access), a MAC protocol for real-time applications over MANETs. SITA combines the advantages of TDMA with the simplicity and robustness of CSMA/CA. SITA provides on (traffic) demand, reserved access to the channel and automatic admission control, while it does not require slot synchronization. The main idea behind SITA is to set up an impromptu, loose, conflict free schedule relative to an initial control exchange. We study the performance of SITA when implemented as an overlay over 802.11 in the ns-2 simulator. Our results show that, with real-time like traffic, SITA provides significant improvement in the end-to-end throughput, by as much as 300%, and on order of magnitude or more decrease in the end-to-end delay and jitter when compared with the vanilla 802.11.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133464072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We assume that the communication system uses a spread spectrum waveform, and each radio implements the Rake processing capability to combat channel fading effects. The CTC approach uses the team-to-team (i.e., many-to-many) configuration that makes two-way communications possible between two distant teams without dedicated long-haul gateways. With the CTC capability, a team would be able to cooperatively communicate with a distant team at a greater range, while it would be impossible when the radios operate individually. Equivalently, with CTC capability, a team would be able to cooperatively communicate with a distant team at a minimal power level for covert, energy-efficient, or high-throughput operations. The potential applications of the CTC approach would be energy-efficient communications, range extension, virtual gateways, covert communications, remote sensing, etc.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132279714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Policies that implement radio regulations are written in a policy language, and used by the policy engine to approve or deny transmission parameters. Since decision speed is one of the primary design requirements of cognitive radios, policy engines and reasoners can easily bottleneck the radio's operation. In this paper, we propose a policy generation and enforcement model for policy-managed cognitive radio systems designed with speed as its top priority. The model is based on the idea of splitting a resource into minimum-sized usable sectors. Policy is preprocessed and compiled for each of the sectors, thus creating a single static policy for each sector of the resource. This model drastically decreases runtime policy comparisons, thus speeding up the policy engine's operation. Another effect of this design is a simplified policy language model. We discuss design considerations and challenges for policy languages and policy engines, ways in which a slow policy engine can bottleneck a cognitive radio's operation, and assert that operational speed should be the top design priority when considering policy engines and reasoners. In addition, we analyze the on-disk storage required by this model, and suggest possible optimizations.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133183038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a distributed sequential methodology which updates the current node's estimator based on its own observation and noise corrupted decision from the previous node. We show that sequential processing is useful only when the channel quality of inter-sensor communication links satisfies a certain condition. We develop a distributed node selection algorithm to select the order of processing nodes based on information utilities and the communication cost. In the proposed scheme, each node only needs to keep track of its neighbor nodes leading to reduced complexity. Simulation results show that a significant reduction in the required number of processing nodes to achieve a desired performance level is obtained compared to that with nearest node selection method.","PeriodicalId":338641,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2009 - 2009 IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127238391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
