Copper (Cu)-nanostructures have demonstrated a great potential to convert CO2 into valuable higher-end hydrocarbons electrochemically but with poor selectivity. Therefore, novel strategies to tune Cu-based electrocatalysts’ activity and selectivity toward multi-carbon products, particularly at low overpotential, are highly desirable. In the present work, we report an atom-economic strategy to tune the physicochemical properties and the electrocatalytic activity of Cu-nanostructures towards ECR. The Cu-nanostructures synthesized via pulse electrodeposition from an electrolyte bath containing Cu-precursor salts with varying anions (viz. acetates, nitrates, sulphates, and chlorides) are investigated for their effect on the physicochemical properties and the ECR performance. The Cu-electrodeposits from Cu-chloride, having cubic morphology, exposed Cu(100) facets, higher Cu+ content and enhanced electrochemical active surface area demonstrated the best ECR performance depicting good selectivity for ethylene formation.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125550893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four transition metal weight ratios were synthesized and characterized. Cyclic voltammetry studies in 0.1 M NaOH demonstrate that the four metal catalysts can effectively oxidize 1 mM glucose, with the 3:1 (60%) Ni to Ti nanocomposite yielding the highest current. The 60% Ni–TiO2/XC72R catalyst was used to construct an enzyme–less, chronoamperometric sensor for glucose detection in an alkaline medium. Using 50 μM aliquots of glucose at a potential of +0.7 V (vs Hg/HgO), the sensor responded rapidly (<3 s), provided a sensitivity of 3300 μA mM−1 cm−2, detection limits of 144 nM (Signal/Noise = 3), and excellent selectivity and reproducibility. The glucose aliquot concentrations were then increased to 1 mM to mimic physiological blood conditions of 1–20 mM. At a potential of +0.7 V (vs Hg/HgO), the sensor continued to respond rapidly (<1 s), showed a sensitivity of 273.7 μA mM−1 cm−2, detection limits of 3.13 μM (S/N = 3), and excellent selectivity and reproducibility. The catalyst also exhibited an ideal anti–poisoning capability to free chloride ions and negligible signals towards other interfering species.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116937297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The surface texture and structural information of the electrode material were examined by FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and X-ray diffraction techniques, whereas the electrochemical sensing application of paracetamol oxidation was investigated by amperometric method. The average crystallite size of CuO-CuFe2O4 was calculated from XRD data and found to be 35.45 nm. The fabricated sensor exhibited a higher sensitivity of 970.26 μA.mM−1.cm−2 along with a lower limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 7.0 μM and 25 μM, respectively, with a linear dynamic range of 10–1200 μM. Furthermore, the CuO-CuFe2O4@rGO modified sensor showed excellent anti-interferents ability, long-term stability and reproducibility towards electro-oxidation of paracetamol drug. Moreover, it can be efficiently applied for the analysis of paracetamol in biological samples. Finally, the synthesized nanocomposite material was validated to be a competent electrocatalyst for electrochemical sensing application of paracetamol.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"4 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133525159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These long lifetimes require new approaches for durability testing. In the present study, the influence of different operating parameters on degradation were studied by long-term cell testing in fuel cell and electrolysis mode (In-situ aging). Based on the results, accelerating parameters for degradation were identified and cells were treated/aged under these conditions without applying an external potential (OCV aging). This approach is cheaper and time saving as compared to conventional cell/stack long-term durability testing. Two commercial SOC cell designs, Fuel Electrode supported cells (FSC) and Electrolyte supported cells (ESC) were studied in this work. They were aged according to the two approaches (under operating conditions and with and without current load) and the obtained degradation effects compared to each other. Based on the cell composition and configuration the degradation parameters were observed to affect the cell performance to varying extents.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127960436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, traditional thermal carbonization would cause a severe loss of nitrogen and need several hours to perform the transition from melamine to carbon. Moreover, to construct all-in-one electrochemical capacitors, the nonconductive MF must be deposited a conductive layer on the surface of MFs. Herein, we developed a flame carbonization method to carbonize the MFs to an all-in-one structure in less than one minute. The carbonized MF exhibits 2.6 times higher nitrogen content than that of the traditional carbonized. MF-based all-in-one compressible electrochemical capacitors deliver excellent alternating current (AC) line filtering performance, such as a low phase angle of −83.1° at 120 Hz, a low resistance capacitance time constant of 157 μs, and a short relaxation time constant of 46 μs. The AC signal of 120 Hz, even a higher frequency of 2000 Hz, can be successfully converted into a stable direct current (DC) signal. Besides, the influence of electrolyte, compressive strain, and the thickness/carbonization time of MFs on the electrochemical performance has been studied. This work provides an ingenious design and effective preparation strategy for MFs-based all-in-one electrochemical capacitors.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121438038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mechanism for Cu(bpy)3(PF6)2 in aprotic DCM is a simple irreversible (slow) heterogeneous electron transfer, Eirrev , with a standard heterogeneous electron transfer rate of 6 × 10−4 cm s−1. For Cu(bpy)3(ClO4)2 in water near pH 6, the mechanism is a six species square scheme, with multiple chemical and electrochemical steps. Voltammetric morphologies for Cu(bpy)3(PF6)2 in DCM and Cu(bpy)3(ClO4)2 in water were evaluated by established diagnostics and modeled with digital simulations. Established diagnostics underrepresent the complexity of copper bipyridines in water. For the complexes formed in situ, the stoichiometric ratio is insufficient to form only Cu(bpy)3 2+, so an equilibrium model that characterizes speciation at given pH and electrode potentials is used. Solvent, pH, and speciation impact the observed voltammetry of copper bipyridine complexes.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116273127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This significant problem can be solved by using disposable/low-cost biomass materials. Electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices including supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries, and hybrid EES devices have been extensively developed in recent years. The EES devices have been recognized as a proper answer to the energy storage problem in the world. Numerous studies have been accomplished to develop biomass-based and biochar-based EES devices to decrease environmental pollution and production costs. The most important part of the EES devices are electrodes including the cathode and anode. According to recent studies, biochar-based electrodes have considerable electrochemical properties. Wheat is one of the most important parts of the human diet. The wheat wastes have amazing electrochemical properties to be used as a precursor of electrochemical energy storage (EES) electrodes including supercapacitors, batteries, and hybrid EES devices. The benign/low-cost wheat wastes especially wheat straw and wheat husk have been used to fabricate wheat-based biochar materials. The electrochemical properties of the wheat-based biochar electrodes (cathode and anode) in the EES devices have determined that these benign/low-cost EES electrodes reduce production costs and obtain acceptable electrochemical performance and environmentally friendly procedures.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130973851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, diatom-rich marine mucilage (MM) collected from the Marmara Sea, Turkey was used as a biomass source and converted to SiO2/Carbon nanocomposite (SiO 2 /C) through pyrolysis and acid etching. Diatom frustules acted as a highly porous silica source while algal organic matter delivered the carbonaceous part of the composite. The natural salts found in marine mucilage served as a self-activating agent and avoided the use of corrosive chemicals for the development of pores. The SiO 2 /C exhibited a competitive capacitance of 210 F g–1 at a current rate of 0.5 A g–1 in 1 M sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) aqueous electrolyte solution. The porous and durable silica skeleton improved capacitance by expanding the electrode/electrolyte interface, and the interconnected hierarchical pores ensured high electrochemical stability during long-term cycling. The mucilage-derived nanocomposite retained 80% and 70% of its capacitance after 4000 and 10,000 charge–discharge cycles, respectively. This work presents a potential solution for the management of marine mucilage by converting it into a high-value electrode material.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114080822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is of great significance to establish a convenient, efficient and universal method for screening and evaluating antioxidant activity. In this study, Nitrogen-doped Graphene (N-G) with high conductivity and Chitosan (CS) with good film forming and stability were used as electrode substrate materials. And a ds-DNA/N-G@CS/GCE electrochemical biosensor for rapid evaluation of antioxidant activity was constructed by assembling ds-DNA and taking advantage of the signal difference between pre- and post-damage ds-DNA loading in Ru(NH3)6 3+ probe solution. N-G@CS with good electro-catalysis and high capacitance significantly improved the response signal of the sensor. At the same time, Square Wave Voltammetry (SWV) was used to optimize the conditions affecting the evaluation results of biosensors. The results showed that under the Fenton solution system with pH 7.0 and the ratio of Fe2+ to OH− 1:4, the biosensor has a high oxidation ds-DNA damage within 30 min The system can inhibit the damage of ds-DNA by adding antioxidants. Under optimized experimental conditions, composite yogurt and plain yogurt with weak antioxidant activity difference were evaluated by the constructed biosensor, and compared with L-ascorbic acid, the activity order was L-ascorbic acid > composite yogurt > plain yogurt. The results were consistent with the results of hydroxyl radical scavenging and ABTS+ radical scavenging experiments, and there was no significant difference between the three methods. This study not only provides a convenient and efficient method for the evaluation of antioxidant activity, but also provides strategies and technical support for the development of low-cost, highly sensitive and universal portable activity evaluation techniques.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125956788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, ordered anodic porous alumina was fabricated on glass substrates by a stamping process using a flexible stamp. This process enables the formation of a resist mask at a low pressure on the sample surface to pattern the starting point for pore generation during anodization. Therefore, it is possible to pattern samples without breaking the glass substrate, and subsequent anodization can generate ordered anodic porous alumina on the substrate. The stamping process using flexible stamps can be applied regardless of the roughness of the Al film on a substrate because the stamp deforms according to the Al surface shape, even when there is a protruding structure on the Al surface. In addition, it was shown that this process could be used to form ordered anodic porous alumina even on Al surfaces with three-dimensional curvatures, such as convex lenses.","PeriodicalId":338397,"journal":{"name":"ECS Advances","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131228136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
