The mathematical modeling of load margin is formulated as an optimization problem considering in-equality constraints - voltage limits and reactive power generation limits of PV buses. Two particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques namely adaptive PSO (APSO) and Hybrid PSO (HPSO) are developed. In APSO technique, new formulas are designed to get adaptive tuning parameters. In HPSO technique, breeding and subpopulation of genetic algorithm (GA) are incorporated in PSO to add diversity & to overcome local optima. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed techniques is established giving different test results of IEEE standard systems.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124158295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These numerical relays play a significant role in the automation, protection and control of transmission lines in a substation. SCADA system for medium voltage substation includes a user interface called Human Machine Interface (HMI) and a number of remote numerical relays. This paper presents the development of Supervision, Control, Monitoring and Protection functions for a medium voltage substation using SCADA system with MODBUS communication. The uniqueness of the developed low cost system is the incorporation/integration of features of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) into numerical relays which improved the existing SCADA system, and the main functions of computer based control and monitoring centre. This paper also covers the detailed features such as single line diagram screen, configuration page, relay setting page, event and fault records incorporated in the design of the above SCADA system. Authors experience in commissioning of this indigenous development at medium voltage substation is also discussed. The system performance has been monitored successfully for the past few years. The relay parameters, such as real-time metering, remote circuit breaker operation and other contact status are also recorded at regular intervals and reported in the paper.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130416395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, many techniques and approaches for STLF problem have been presented in the literature. However, there is still an essential need to develop more accurate load forecast method. This paper presents the application of artificial Neural Network (NN) for hour-ahead load forecasting which is useful for real-time/balancing electricity market. The hourly load data set of California electricity market has been used to train and test the NN model. Several methods have been proposed to study the unbalanced three-phase load flow solution for distribution systems. Approach[1] characterizes the network by using two matrices: the bus-injection to branch-current (BIBC) matrix and the branch-current to bus-voltage (BCBV) matrix. In this paper Genetic Algorithm is used to accelerate the performance of the algorithm in [1] during varied network conditions and results obtained are compared with the original method. Programs were developed in MATLAB for both the approaches and applied on the same test system. Test results showed that the proposed approach can give accurate solution faster to different loading patterns including ill conditioned one.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117155447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, laboratory based pollution performance tests were carried out on 11kv silicon rubber polymer insulator under AC voltage at different pollution levels with sodium chloride as a contaminant. Leakage current waveforms during the experimental studies were measured. Normally FFT spectrum estimation method used to find the harmonic spectrum in the leakage currents. But this method suffers from the major problem of resolution. So in this paper a higher order spectrum estimation method (Min-Norm) employed to understand the frequency domain characteristics of the leakage current signal. The results of the harmonic spectrum shows that has a good resolution than FFT spectrum and Reported results of this preliminary study on 11kv silicon rubber insulator shows that development of flashover due to pollution could be easily identified from the analysis of harmonic contents of leakage current signal.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130616872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper provides a systematic approach for designing a Supplementary Excitation Controller to damp the Low frequency oscillations observed in the system using an Innovative Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Algorithm. In Power systems, a good measure of damping is the Damping Ratio. The proposed Controller design is formulated as a Damping ratio enhancement based Optimization problem to compute the Optimal damping controller parameters, which aid in improving system stability. To validate the effective damping action of the proposed controller, Non linear Time domain simulations has been carried out in this work. The contrasting feature of this work is the implementation of Dynamic Sensitivity Analysis. A detailed Sensitivity analysis reveals that the system dynamic performance with the proposed PSO based controller is quite robust to wide variations in system loading conditions and also variation in System model parameters compared to the conventionally designed Lead lag Controller.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121671550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
