The proposed protection and control scheme consider both grid connected and autonomous operation of the microgrid. A protection scheme, capable of detecting faults effectively in both grid connected and islanded operations is proposed. The main challenge of the protection, due to current limiting state of the converters is overcome by using admittance relays. The relays operate according to the inverse time characteristic based on measured admittance of the line. The proposed scheme isolates the fault from both sides, while downstream side of the microgrid operates in islanding condition. Moreover faults can be detected in autonomous operation. In grid connected mode distributed generators (DG) supply the rated power while in absence of the grid, DGs share the entire power requirement proportional to rating based on output voltage angle droop control. The protection scheme ensures minimum load shedding with isolating the faulted network and DG control provides a smooth islanding and resynchronization operation. The efficacy of coordinated control and protection scheme has been validated through simulation for various operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115641779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Probabilistic reliability models of the system components are considered and Monte Carlo method is used while evaluating the reliability of the distribution system. The reconfiguration is aimed at maximizing the reliability of the power supplied to the customers. A binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) algorithm is used as a tool to determine the optimal configuration of the sectionalizing and tie switches in the system. The proposed methodology is applied on a modified IEEE 13-bus distribution system.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"412 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114829345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Present day complexity in power system demands PSS must be robust enough to ensure adequate system performance over a wide range of system operating conditions to come out from the problem of oscillatory instability. H2 and H∞ Norm based robust control techniques have now been developed and are being used for the controller design in power system. This paper deals with design of PSS using weighted mixed sensitivity H∞ robust control theory. The effectiveness of the power system stabilizer designed through this method is demonstrated by simulation of a sample power system for various load conditions using MATALB.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"11 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126171487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Loss Sensitivity approach is developed and is used in each of the Evolutionary algorithms such as Differential Evolution (DE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) And Genetic Algorithm (GA). The objectives are to minimize real power loss and to improve the voltage profile of a given interconnected power system. A term “Loss sensitivity” at each bus is defined which depends on variation of real power loss with respect to the voltage at that bus. Based on the values of the loss sensitivity, corrective action is taken by adding Shunt capacitor at the weak buses identified by weak bus analysis, by controlling reactive Generations at the Generator Buses by Judging the sensitivity at these buses, and also tap changing positions are controlled if the tap changing transformers are in between the loss sensitive buses. Then, Evolutionary Algorithms are run to make one iteration complete. The whole process is allowed to continue for the specified number of iteration. The solutions obtained by this method is compared with the solutions obtained by each of these Evolutionary Algorithm separately and also with their hybrids with Simulated Annealing (SA) and with Simple Quadratic Programming (SQP). From the comparisons authors have shown how sensitivity based Evolutionary technique can be a very faithful new tool for the reactive power dispatch..","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123247511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic problems of the existing UPFC structure are discussed. The main aim of this paper is to present selected results of the analysis of the new UPFC based on matrix converter. Also the paper describes in detail the modulation algorithm used for the matrix converter and the closed loop control scheme used for UPFC. The complete digital simulation of the proposed scheme of UPFC incorporated into the power system is performed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and the results are presented. The simulated results show that static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) part of UPFC provides good voltage regulation and the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) influences power flow over the transmission line.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122200054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For alleviating congestion, proper locations of DG are important. This paper focuses a comparative study between a novel bus reduction approach and modified load flow with optimization for determination of the optimal placement of single distributed generator in power systems. The objective of optimal placement of DG is aimed at “reduction in power losses”. The two approaches are tested on IEEE 6 bus, IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 30 bus test systems and verified by Power World Simulator software. The voltage profile of the whole system after placement of DG at optimal location is also focused here.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129208183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The harmonics level of VSC is optimized by selecting proper dead angle (β) of a three level 18-pulse voltage source converter operated at fundamental frequency switching. The effect of varying dead angle (β) is also studied in detail and it is compared with two-level voltage source converter. The performance of the proposed converter is studied on various issues such as reactive power compensation, power factor correction and harmonics distortion. Simulation results are presented for this three level multipulse voltage source converter to demonstrate its steady state, dynamic and harmonics performance.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121407394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is formulated as multivariable unconstrained nonlinear optimization problem. The admittance of the equivalent circuit of the six-phase self-excited induction generator (SPSEIG) is taken as an objective function. The frequency and magnetic reactance or speed and magnetic reactance or frequency and capacitive reactance are selected as an independent variables depending upon the operational condition of the machine. In this proposed method, resultant matrix is directly solved by Fmincon method. The developed mathematical model is quite simple and can be implemented for connection of pure resistive load with appropriate value of capacitor connected across SPSEIG. The computed results are compared with experimental results, and are found to be in good agreement with them.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124102938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
