Z-source inverter is a single-stage topology that has buck-boost feature, which is possible because of additional shoot through state introduced in zero state of the conventional inverter pulse width modulation and provides desired output ac voltage. Small DG system with alternate energy sources requires power conditioning units with low cost, high efficiency and tolerance to wide range of input voltage variation and has to perform various functions such as dc-ac conversion, system control and achieve power quality norms. A two-loop control strategy, one Z-source capacitor voltage regulation and other for ac side control with inductor current feedback with voltage feed-forward is employed, which gives good transient response also suppress load and source disturbances effectively. Simulation results are presented to validate proposed control strategy and also open-loop results presented.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125584465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accurate faulted phase selection is required for such a scheme. This paper presents a novel scheme for detection and classification of faults on double circuit transmission line. The proposed approach uses combination of wavelet transform and neural network, to solve the problem. While wavelet transform is a powerful mathematical tool which can be employed as a fast and very effective means of analyzing power system transient signals, artificial neural network has a ability to classify non-linear relationship between measured signals by identifying different patterns of the associated signals. The proposed algorithm consists of time-frequency analysis of fault generated transients using wavelet transform, followed by pattern recognition using artificial neural network to identify the faulted phase. MATLAB/Simulink software is used to generate fault signals and verify the correctness of the algorithm. The adaptive discrimination scheme is tested by simulating different types of fault and varying fault resistance, fault location and fault inception time, on a given power system model. The simulation results show that the proposed phase selector scheme is able to identify faulted phase on the double circuit transmission line rapidly and correctly.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130280824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, the Indian power sector is presently facing the serious power crisis. Therefore, quality of available power is emerging as a major problem, especially in rural area, where three phase Induction Motor is widely used by farmers and they encounter losses, due to poor PQ as most of them are not aware about PQ problem, also are not educated enough to understand the sophisticated measurement and analysis techniques. Hence, they must be acquainted with PQ problem by using the technique they can understand. The aim of this paper is to put the most common PQ disturbances in the way, that, a layman can understand. For any given IM the noise emitted by it under normal supply conditions and under the influences of PQ disturbances is distinctly different. Also, the change in noise depends upon the type of PQ disturbance and its severity. A laboratory experiment is setup for investigating, three different types of PQ disturbances, namely, sustained low voltage, supply-magnitude unbalance and harmonic distortions. A low cost and efficient method for data acquisition consists of a microphone to detect noise and PC sound card for A/D conversion. Data acquisition and signal de-noising is done in MATLAB. The results obtained in each case are presented.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132086767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that there are both inertial and non-inertial DGs connected to the microgrid. The inertial DG can be a synchronous machine of smaller rating while inertia less DGs (solar) are assumed as DC sources. The inertia less DGs are connected through Voltage Source Converter (VSC) to the microgrid. The VSCs are controlled by either state feedback or current feedback mode to achieve desired voltage-current or power outputs respectively. The power sharing among the DGs is achieved by drooping voltage angle. Once the reference for the output voltage magnitude and angle is calculated from the droop, state feedback controllers are used to track the reference. The angle reference for the synchronous machine is compared with the output voltage angle of the machine and the error is fed to a PI controller. The controller output is used to set the power reference of the synchronous machine. The rate of change in the angle in a synchronous machine is restricted by the machine inertia and to mimic this nature, the rate of change in the VSCs angles are restricted by a derivative feedback in the droop control. The connected distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) provides ride through capability during power imbalance in the microgrid, especially when the stored energy of the inertial DG is not sufficient to maintain stability. The inclusion of the DSATCOM in such cases ensures the system stability. The efficacies of the controllers are established through extensive simulation studies using PSCAD.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115614120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All around the globe a large number of load forecasting procedures / tools are being used and most of these basically use the statistical data to project the demand on daily/ weekly/ monthly/ yearly basis. However, due to the fast changing scenario in real time power system, the SCADA data of the recent past period can also immensely help the operator towards demand side management for the immediate future period say for next half an hour to one hour more accurately and quickly. In India with the increase in the size of the grids as well as large interconnections, along with the increased complexities towards power system operation and control, there has also been a phenomenal expansion and growth of power markets. These markets have assumed greater importance, particularly after the advent of The Electricity Act 2003, introduction of open access in transmission and emergence of power exchanges. In this paper an attempt has been made to deliberate on an approach which is helping in estimating the demand more accurately for shorter durations on a real time basis. The basic principle adopted in this approach is that it applies the simple time series analysis to estimate the demand in the dynamically changing grid conditions. This tool is in practical use and has been found to be of immense benefit to the grid operators at various state and regional load dispatch centres (LDC) in the country. With this utility the operators are able to estimate the demand for future 30 minutes on a real time basis and this is helping them in taking an advance action towards ensuring the grid operation with reliability, security and economy.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"248 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124431879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
