It also gives emphasis on importance of proper functioning of these corridors for stability of the state grid as well as that of western regional grid. These aspects are explained with the help of some case studies. Further scope of this paper covers importance of advanced operational and control measures like implementation of Wide Area Measurement Systems(WAMS).It also focuses on initial experiences of MSETCL in developing implementation of WAMS scheme in MSETCL grid which not only benefit Maharashtra grid but also beneficial for whole of a Western regional grid.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128157468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Real-time monitoring of phase angles across different nodes, which indicates the proximity to instability, the very purpose will be well defined if the PMUs are placed at buses which are more vulnerable. The issue is to identify the key buses where the PMUs should be placed when the transient stability prediction is taken into account considering various disturbances. Integer Linear Programming technique with equality and inequality constraints is used to find out the optimal placement set with key buses identified from transient stability analysis. Results on IEEE-14 bus system are presented to illustrate the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124231118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Real Time Pricing (RTP) and Time of Use pricing (TOU) function as load management tools. The magnitude variation of price (for e.g., the diurnal, weekly or seasonal) would require setting up of a model to represent consumer behavior. The model relies on the concept of demand elasticity across time, degree of consumer economic rationality and, on the supply side, on the price formulation model. A range of assumptions in respect of these matters are explored. In this paper the MSEDCL system is analyzed to check demand elasticity. It shall be done in two parts viz; (a) within the existing time slots, the TOU rates to be modified based on Cost of Unserved Energy (CUE) , (b) With the existing tariff the time slots to be varied and its implications to be analyzed based on the Cost of Service (COS) study, (c)A new tariff proposed based on COS and CUE to decide peak hour tariff.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131702660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If any balanced or unbalanced fault occurs during power swing condition, conventional directional relaying algorithm finds limitation due to complex nature of signal. Once a fault is identified as being only on a phase, then the single-pole tripping takes place. During this situation the sequence component based directional relay will have a tendency to trip incorrectly due to the unbalanced loading condition. Again if a single-pole tripping situation happens during power swing, the situation becomes more complex. This paper highlights these issues and proposes a fault direction estimation technique using fuzzy logic approach where feature selection using mutual information technique is emphasized. Performance of the technique is evaluated using the test system simulated through PSCAD/EMTP software.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"4 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120940767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of the harmonics is essential to determine the performance and designing of these equipment and optimal location of the harmonic mitigation devices. In this paper a preliminary survey has been carried out in the domestic and commercial areas to identify the existing level of current and voltage harmonic and their characteristics for different type of residential and commercial loads. The voltage and current waveforms of some of the commonly used loads and their harmonics have been recorded using power analyzer and digital storage oscilloscope. The total harmonic distortion is used as a harmonic index to identify the effects of different nonlinear loads. The detail mathematical modeling of the personal computer type load is established to estimate the harmonic contents of such loads. To verify their characteristics whether the nonlinear loads behave like current-type or voltage-type harmonic source, some nonlinear loads are simulated and validated experimentally.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129548580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The OC relays are the major protection devices in a distribution system. OC relay is usually employed as backup protection. But in some situations it may be the only protection provided. To reduce the power outages, mal-operation of the backup relays should be avoided, and therefore, OC relay coordination in power distribution network is a major concern of protection engineer. The OC relay coordination in ring fed distribution networks is a highly constrained optimization problem. The purpose is to find an optimum relay setting to minimize the time of operation of relays and at the same time, to avoid the mal-operation of relays. This paper presents GA technique for optimum coordination of OC relays in a ring fed distribution system. Constraints are incorporated in the fitness function making use of the penalty method. Computer programs (using MATLAB) have been developed for optimum coordination of OC relays using GA technique.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132588104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed ELC is used to control frequency and voltage of IAG despite frequent change in consumer loads. Such an ELC is having a capability of feeding the power to the consumer loads, more than the IAG power rating. This is realised using an isolated star/hexagon transformer with a voltage source converter (VSC) and a battery at its DC bus. The proposed generating system with ELC is modeled and simulated in MATLAB along with Simulink and Simpower system (SPS) toolboxes. The obtained results are presented to demonstrate the performance of an IAG feeding three-phase four-wire loads with the neutral current compensation.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125926666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
