Drivers navigated a simulated network using five route guidance systems: paper map, heads-down turn-by-turn display, heads-down electronic route map, heads-up turn-by-turn display, and audio guidance system. Dependent variables included reaction times to a roadside scanning task, number of navigation errors and subjective workload. Results indicated the paper map to be associated with the longest reaction time and the highest workload. The audio system was associated with the shortest reaction time and the lowest workload, followed closely by the heads-down electronic map and the heads-up turn-by-turn display. Subjects reacted faster to the scanning task with heads-up turn-by-turn display compared to the heads-down turn-by-turn display. The heads-down electronic map despite its complexity performed better than the simpler heads-down turn-by-turn display.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. We propose a new crossover operator considering adjacency relations, and compare the new GA with the GA using the partially matched crossover or a branch-and-bound method. Some experiments are performed on digital road maps. The proposed GA finds optimum solutions effectively.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. Four architecture elements are depicted: logical architecture; physical architecture; market packages; and evaluatory design. Each of these elements is important in understanding the architecture. This paper also outlines the evaluation process, and relates how the architecture elements are used in the process.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. KRONOS employs the simple continuum modeling approach and explicitly models the interrupted road traffic flow behavior such as merging, diverging and weaving. The coupling effects of ramps on the main freeway are considered in determining actual amount of flows entering/exiting freeways. The current version can handle up to a 32 km (20 miles) freeway section with 8 lanes.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. Machine vision provides \"above road\" detection and wide-area measurements that replace many conventional inductive loop detectors. Lane closure costs for loop installation and maintenance are effectively eliminated. In addition, the detection performance is easily verified and detectors are easy to reconfigure interactively.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS.
