The manner in which the service time distributions for different types of lanes can be simulated is presented, as is the extent to which various factors related to the toll booth demand can be incorporated. Subsequently, a number of sample analyses are performed to illustrate how well the modeled results track with corresponding analytical solutions, and to illustrate the various ways in which ATC (automatic toll collection) can yield potential system benefits. The latter estimation of travel time, delay, fuel consumption and emission estimates within a context of time-waiting demands, toll rates and diversions, is critical to any comprehensive analysis of system-wide impacts of toll facilities.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. Specifically, we plan to develop a \"Smart Card\" based system to access any travel-related information. The unique feature of the system is that it is based on the personality and preferences of a given user or user-category. The display formats, (e.g. text, audio, hardcopy), interfaces, preference-based queries (e.g. cost, travel time, highway/arterial roads, etc.) will be tailored to the given user/user-category. This will be realized by state-of-the-art ASIC technology called reconfigurable field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Since the system can adapt to an individual's (or group of individuals) taste, we expect that it will have greater acceptance by the user community. In addition, the use of FPGAs and modern CAD based design will result in better performance in terms of response time for a given query and decrease the cost of a system, which makes it very practical. Our system will be a significant improvement over the existing Smart Card technologies which are mostly restricted to purchasing tickets in large quantities. The proposed system will take into account both ticketing and access to information services, and serve as a tool for monitoring the performance of an information server.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. The techniques give a precise and intuitive description that can exploited to define and manage a systems architecture. In contrast to conventional methods, it also provides an architectural model operating with types and instances and offers relative views through roles. Techniques demonstrated here have been used for a number of years to produce ultra-reliable software for telecommunication systems applications.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. Within the human factors community, there is considerable uncertainty and concern regarding the nature and utility of human factors handbooks and guidelines materials. The objective of this paper is to describe and discuss three critical issues associated with the development of human factors design guidelines for advanced traveler information systems (ATIS). These three issues are: (1) the lack of human factors design criteria; (2) developing selection criteria for data sources used to produce guidelines; and (3) variability in the user population of human factors design guidelines. Within the context of these issues, some of the limitations, trade-offs, constraints, and options associated with the development of human factors design guidelines for ATIS are presented.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. Developments in linear systems control theory are applied to address two continuing problems that are keys to effective road traffic system operations: road traffic models; and traffic signal control. The control of an oversaturated intersection is formulated as a linear systems control problem on the basis of mathematical models. These models are utilized to develop local traffic signal control strategies under various traffic conditions.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. These problems have created a demand for highly sophisticated large-scale systems that collect and disseminate parking lot information over an entire urban area. Such large, high-function systems were introduced in 1988 in the three cities of Toyota, Kurashiki, and Takasaki. Among these, this paper describes the advanced Toyota parking guidance and information system, which collects and presents not only parking lot information but also urban area congestion information and even highway regulation information.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. These range from out-of-vehicle roadside displays providing variable message/direction signs, to in-vehicle systems, such as navigational aids, map-based systems, audible systems (e.g. radio) and fully dynamic route guidance systems advising appropriate turns at each junction encountered. This high level of system development has been matched with considerable scientific activity in system design and evaluation using offline modelling tools. For DRG systems, the challenging tasks for the models have been to realistically capture the dynamic effects of traffic and of the DRG systems, and the driver responses to each. This paper describes the development of a model RGCONTRAM designed specifically to address these issues so that efficient operational strategies for route guidance systems can be identified.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS. In the first stage, a simple transit information system was developed and tested with in-house participants (subjects). Due to the lack of literature in similar studies, the first stage experiments help in designing an actual prototype for conducting final in-lab experiments to evaluate impacts on solo drivers' and transit users' travel decisions. This paper discusses the first stage of experiments and analysis. The proposed first stage simulation experiment study will investigate the types of information sought and the time spent on each type of information by in-home participants. The experiment uses a PC-based transit information system prototype and has a menu-based information access system. This paper contains description of study area, road network, transit information system design, experiments and analysis.","PeriodicalId":337008,"journal":{"name":"Pacific Rim TransTech Conference. 1995 Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference Proceedings. 6th International VNIS.
