The system processes video in progressive mode and provides a standard VGA output format. The main features of the system are determined by using a distributed computing architecture, based on Independent Hardware Modules (IHM), which facilitate system expansion and adaptation to new applications. Each IHM is composed by an FPGA board that can hold one or more CNN layers. The total computing capacity of the system is determined by the number of IHM used and the amount of resources available in the FPGAs. Our architecture supports traditional cloned templates, but also the (simultaneous) use of time-variant and space-variant templates.","PeriodicalId":336891,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2010)","volume":"1 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125869107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A conventional blur that occurs in images is out of focus, which is generated because of lens defocus. In this sense, many researchers have presented methods to estimate defocus blur so far. This paper shows how the Cellular Neural Network (CNN) can be used to estimate defocus blur parameter. After the point spread function (PSF) parameter is obtained by the CNN, defocused blur images can be restored effectively.","PeriodicalId":336891,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2010)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126492000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Smalley as one of the top ten challenges to be faced by humanity in the next 50 years. Many attempts have been made by several researchers and policy makers to address the issue of effective education. T. Grotzer from Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) emphasized that the teachers, along with teaching scientific skills, encourage students to locate opportunities and apply those skills at appropriate situations. Similarly, Nobel laureate Prof. Carl Wieman proposed the use of scientific approach to science learning. He has argued in that understanding of the concepts as well as retention by students is much more effective if a student is involved with the class rather than being a passive listener. He also recommended the use of educational circuit kits to have a better impact on the students. After the recent discovery of memristor, many researchers including Prof. Leon Chua and Dr. Stan Williams recommended the need of introducing memristor to high school students. A similar argument was made in, where the authors recommended introducing chaos theory to high school students. The present demo aims to introduce the researchers and teachers with plug and play circuit kit of memristor. The memristor kit can greatly help students of nano-technology involved in understanding this recently discovered device. In fact, Valparaiso community schools recently started a program to introduce nano technology, including memristor, to talented elementary school children. The present memristor kit can be highly beneficial to such initiatives. At 2nd Memristor and Memristive Systems Symposium (CNNA 2010), the present demo would attempts to attract the attention of both high school science teachers to understand the use of such kits for their students as well as researcher active in the field of memristor based designs.","PeriodicalId":336891,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2010)","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115798770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The routing scheme extends the Address-Event Representation (AER) protocol for spike event communication to a modular, hierarchical architecture supporting efficient implementation of global synaptic inter-connectivity across a cellular matrix of message parsing axonal relay nodes at varying spatial scales. This paper presents a probabilistic framework for analyzing trade-offs in throughput and latency of synaptic communication as a function of load and geometry, and simulation results verifying the statistics of traffic flow across the architecture.","PeriodicalId":336891,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2010)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131656678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depending on the sensing technology and the analyte under investigation, obtaining a steady-state pattern from a sensor array may take minutes, yet still be unreliable. Therefore, odors are encoded in a spatio-temporal fashion in the nature, a task that fits very well in Cellular Neural Network (CNN) paradigm. Inspired by the generic insect olfactory system, we propose a CNN-based signal conditioning system that can be directly applicable on raw sensor data in real time. We interface the system with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, which maps the dynamically-encoded odor to an identity, and demonstrate the recognition system on a dataset recorded from a metal-oxide odor sensor array.","PeriodicalId":336891,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2010)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124283132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The speed of signals are determined by the physical properties of the medium therefore the distance between the elements should be decreased to improve performance. Array processors are a good candidate to solve this problem. Similar approach is required on today high performance field programmable logic devices where wire delay dominates over gate (LUT) delay. Centralized control unit of a configurable accelerator might become a performance bottleneck on the current state-of-the-art FPGAs. In the paper a process network inspired approach is given to create distributed control units. The advantage of the proposed method will be shown by designing a complex multi-layer array computing architecture to emulate the operation of a mammalian retina in real time.","PeriodicalId":336891,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2010)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116803233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Freeman","doi":"10.1109/CNNA.2010.5430291","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CNNA.2010.5430291","url":null,"abstract":"In cognition, sensation - \"the activity of a sense organ and closely connected nerve structures\" - is followed by perception - \"the meaningful impression of any object obtained by use of the senses\" (Webster). Brains perform the microscopic sensory processes of extracting and processing information from the world. They have been well modeled with cellular neural networks (CNN) by modifying connections in reinforcement learning. Brains perform the mesoscopic perceptual processes of categorizing the information and constructing its meaning by using distributed memories. Perception requires a different topology than CNN, which is provided by random graph theory. Correspondingly cerebral cortex has two kinds of networks that learn. The sensory and motor cortices contain numerous, highly specialized, local networks that are tuned by local, rapid, short-term learning to select features in the input and bind them into sustained discharges of microscopic cell assemblies. These local systems are embedded in brain-wide, scale-free, mesoscopic feedback connections that learn slowly in consolidation. The distributed architecture integrates sensory input with selected memories into sequences of large-scale, distributed neural activity patterns that express meanings of sensory information. The patterns resemble cinematographic frames. The construction of each frame is by a phase transition. The brain topology, process, and activity patterns may be modeled by embedding multiple CNN in a large-scale random graph. That is neuropercolation; its goal is to provide a superior alternative to differential equations, which are now used to model perception.","PeriodicalId":336891,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2010)","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115608183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anisotropic filtering can be used to implement very effective edge preserving noise filtering, image segmentation as well as direct edge detection. The MIPA4k processor cell is capable of performing globally or locally controlled anisotropic diffusion in two ways, either for resistive or capacitive input configurations, resulting in different diffusion networks and performance. The array cells can also directly extract edge information from the resistive fuse circuitry. Measured examples of the nonlinear anisotropic filtering and edge extraction on the MIPA4k processor array are presented.","PeriodicalId":336891,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2010)","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123447229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
