The accumulation of cold temperatures during winter is required to release dormancy, whilst heat accumulation in spring promotes bud break and blooming. Chilling and heat requirements are used to anticipate cultivars’ suitability to local agroclimatic conditions. This review summarizes recent advances on the physiological and genetic mechanisms regulating dormancy in apple trees; and presents a compilation of available chilling and heat requirements for apple cultivars. Information shows a wide range of chilling requirements in existing cultivars. However, results reported for the same cultivar are highly variable between locations and methods used to estimate chilling; raising concerns on the suitability of using chill requirements to inform planting decisions. In the context of climate change, it is essential to ensure current knowledge on the physiological and genetic mechanisms regulating bud break guides the development of improved models that can generate better estimates of chilling and heat requirements in apple.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115179635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigates the water use of sweet cherry using the heat pulse velocity sap flow method. Tree response to drying soil conditions over two consecutive measurement periods (September 2017 to December 2018) in the eastern Free State, South Africa, is also evaluated. During the post-harvest period (December), there was a continuous increase in daily water consumption by trees, in conjunction with an increase in canopy cover, even though the crop load was reduced. Measured sap flow was positively correlated to net radiation, air temperature, and water vapour pressure deficit. The transpiration rates ranged from 1.2 to 3.5 L d-1 during the flowering stage (day of year, DOY, 244 – 270) and showed an increasing trend as the days progressed. During the ripening stage (DOY 271 – 292), transpiration rates decreased from 4.5 to 1.1 L d-1 over the 2018 season. This decreasing trend from the previous growth stage was due to soil drying and scorching weather conditions that led to trees experiencing water stress. Sap flow measurements, however, showed typical characteristics of the diurnal trend during selected days during varying weather conditions. The fraction of transpirable soil water (FTSW) threshold varied for different fruit growth stages and approached 1.0 for different stress levels. FTSW exceeded 0.4 when sweet cherry trees utilised stored soil water, while the transpiration rates declined during prolonged hot days. Moreover, the stress coefficient factor ranged between 0.45 – 0.65 for different growth stages. The daily soil water content varied, and soil evaporation was expected to increase during hot and dry days. In the early stage of a dry spell, soil water content did not directly affect the transpiration rate. Sweet cherry trees are susceptible to soil water deficit at different stages of fruit development. More research is required to understand transpiration as an irrigation management and planning indicator.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133781533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thidiazuron (TDZ), a substituted phenylurea, and 1-methylcycloproene (1-MCP), a non-toxic inhibitor of ethylene perception, are nowadays substances commonly used to prevent early damage caused by senescence and to delay chlorophyll degradation. Ranunculus asiaticus L. is cultivated for cut flower production and is highly sensitive to ethylene and leaf yellowing. In this study, the effect of different pulse-tratment in prolonging cut ranunculus vase life was analyzed. Methods TDZ 10 µM, 1-MCP 500 ppb, and a combination of both were applied for 24 hours after harvest. The effect of the treatments was evaluated by performing non-destructive (% loss of fresh weight, chlorophyll a fluorescence, in vivo chlorophyll content, and Nitrogen Flavonol Index – NFI) and destructive (chlorophyll, carotenoids, anthocyanins concentration, and phenolic index) analyses at 0, 1, 12, and 14 days from treatments. Results and Discussion Flower wilting was delayed by 4 days in 1-MCP + TDZ 10 µM treatments, which also reduced weight loss and chlorophyll degradation compared to controls. The effectiveness of these compounds in preventing senescence has been confirmed by the decreased biosynthesis of phenolic compounds.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127190198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the cyclolipopeptides (CLPs), in the form of fengycin and iturin A, in crude metabolite extracts from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as an alternative biofungicide. The crude extract containing CLPs was applied with an edible coating (i.e., zein as a carrier) as a postharvest treatment against B. cinerea on “Packham’s Triumph” pears and P. expansum on “Cripps Pink” apples. Treatments were applied either as dips in combination with a zein edible coating at pH 2.0 or pH 8.0, or as sprays with a zein edible coating at pH 2.0 or pH 8.0. The efficacy of CLP applications was measured in comparison to the standard registered synthetic fungicide fludioxonil at a concentration of 299.0 mg/L. Treatments were applied to the fruit either preventatively (as sprays) or curatively (as dips or sprays). The lowest mean blue mold incidence (68.6%) was achieved when the edible coating containing the crude extract of B. amyloliquefaciens (CLP at pH 2.0) was applied as a curative dip treatment. B. cinerea infection was reduced by 92.6%, resulting in a 5.7% gray mold incidence for the curative application of CLPs at pH 2.0. This result was not significantly different from the inhibitory action of the fungicide fludioxonil. These results indicate that CLPs are an effective alternative biofungicide that can be used for the control of B. cinerea on pome fruit, especially if their formulation and application are improved and optimized.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132662612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The asexual overwintering of V. inaequalis has primarily been described as wood scab, superficial scab, or bud scab, and more rarely, it is mentioned as overwintering on infected leaves and fruits still attached to the trees. Wood scab is fungal pustules found on new and 1-year-old shoots, but it is also found on 2-year-old wood. It has been reported in many apple-growing countries throughout the world; however, most reports of wood scab being an important source of primary inoculum, as well as the most in-depth studies, are from the UK. Reports from some countries describe what is named superficial scab, which are symptomless infections of the pathogen on shoot surfaces. Overwintering of V. inaequalis on the inner or outer bud scales has also been reported in some countries. Infections may appear as small lesions on the bud scales, but numerous conidia have also been found in buds without symptomatic fungal tissue. The incidence and quantity of overwintering in the asexual stage are dependent on the amount of scab in the previous season, growth characteristics, and cultivar susceptibility. In orchards with limited options for fungicide control and/or in orchards with loss of scab control in the preceding season, conidia of V. inaequalis should not be underestimated as a source of primary inoculum.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123663842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tephritid fruit flies continue to cause serious direct and indirect damage to the sub-sector. The male annihilation technique (MAT) using methyl eugenol (ME) is among the most revered techniques in fruit fly management. However, ME-based lures are only available to some farmers in Africa. Several basils of the genus Ocimum produce ME. Methods In laboratory experiments, we used a dual choice olfactometer to assess the attraction of adult oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis to intact plants, 100 µL commercial methyl eugenol (ME) (positive control), 10 mg/mL of O. tenuiflorum aqueous extract (Otae), and a negative control (blank). Large arena experiments were conducted to compare the responses of four fruit fly species of economic importance in Africa to Otae-baited traps. Results In dual choice olfactometer assay, more B. dorsalis males (78.6%) than females (23.8%) were attracted to Otae. Most B. dorsalis males were attracted to the positive control (90.5%) and 10 mg/mL Otae (88.5%) compared to the whole plant (84.0%). In large arena experiments, Otae attracted the most B. dorsalis males (47.7%), followed by Zeugodacus cucurbitae males (25.1%), while males of Ceratitis species were the least attracted. The analysis of headspace volatiles from aerial plants, Otae and essential oil using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry detected 97 compounds. The intact plant without flowers, intact plant with flowers, Otae, and the O. tenuiflorum essential oil contributed 76, 62, 33 and 28 compounds, respectively. ME comprised the top three most abundant compounds, especially in the essential oil. Discussion Our study confirms the potential of O. tenuiflorum as a source of ME for tephritid fruit fly integrated management in Africa. Otae, a readily available alternative to commercial ME, can be used to develop fruit fly-baited traps, particularly for smallholder farmers.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134437877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A generally agreed aim of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is to reduce reliance on ‘chemical control’ using synthetic pesticides, usually placed at the top of the IPM pyramid. This review focuses on the approaches at the bottom of the IPM pyramid in relation to the pest insects of root, bulb and leafy vegetable crops in northern Europe. These concern establishment of the crop before any additional treatments are applied; summarised as 1) what to plant (crop and cultivar(s)), 2) where to plant it (considering a range of spatial scales) and 3) what to plant it with (companion species, wildflowers etc.). Were it possible to identify sources of resistance or partial resistance to all key pests and pathogens of vegetables and breed these into commercial cultivars, this would undoubtedly be an effective and ‘reliable’ way forward. Increased use of rotation and the isolation of ‘new’ crops from sources of infestation could also be a reliable approach to the management of certain pests, especially those with a limited capacity to disperse. For some growers, there would be a need to alter the ‘spatial arrangement’ of their cropping system to maximise the benefits and this might involve more cooperation with neighbours. Finally, although there appears to be much potential, the benefits of increasing the diversity of plant species within and around crops are currently hard to quantify with regard to pest management and thus might be considered to be less ‘reliable’ approaches at present. It is vital, therefore, that there is a greater understanding of the mechanisms involved and of how it may be possible to achieve a more consistent effect from the range of approaches available.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114240289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Knowledge of LW, including technique or their cooling effects, is well discussed, but little published data on plant diversity, design and development in LWs exists. The plants themselves determine whether LWs achieve their intended benefits. However, LW plants are exposed to extreme conditions such as temperature or drought stress. Material and methods Therefore, we observed plant development in a textile-based LW (mat) over a three-year experiment under a temperate oceanic climate in the south west of Germany. The aim was to establish higher plant diversity for use in LWs. We chose 34 perennials (shrubs, ferns, grasses, and geophytes) that require high soil moisture. The mat was soil-free and had to be overwatered with a nutrient solution. The perennials were grouped in the plant module “cascade” (tall, hanging plants) and “ground cover” (low-spreading plants). We created four experimental walls exposed to the south, north, west, and east and adapted the plant modules to the lighting conditions of the experiment wall. The modules were pre-cultivated and attached to the experimental walls in a randomised design and repetition of four. We determined the visual attractiveness and additional parameters of individual plants. Results We observed that Tellima grandiflora ‘Rubra’, Waldsteinia ternata, Pachysandra terminalis, and Heuchera Hybride ‘Purple Petticoats’ were the most attractive all year. Ajuga tenorii ‘Mauro’, Alchemilla caucasica, Hosta sieboldii ‘Harry van Trier’, Glechoma hederacea, and Geum coccineum ‘Carlskaer’ showed a nice ornamental effect and flowering during summer. The ferns and Waldsteinia ternata showed delayed growth but nice leaf texture gradually. Discussion and conclusion We saw differences in winter survival rates depending on minimum temperature in winter. The tested plants developed a special vertical growth form and height. We observed various results at different expositions but found suitable species for each exposition. With these results, we derived a table of plants along with their suitability for LWs and determining conditions.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127390396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focused on foliar spray and trunk injection applications of extract of giant knotweed, Reynoutria sachalinensis (RSE), as a plant resistance activator candidate and on comparisons to antibiotics. Five foliar applications of RSE (2.24 L/ha) on 6-year-old trees of cultivar ‘Bartlett’ resulted in 100% control of shoot blight severity and canker incidence in both years of evaluation. The RSE trunk injection in fall of the first year did not control the disease allowing 75% of shoot severity and 38.5% of canker incidence. The opposite happened in the second year, when we injected RSE in spring, providing 85.7% control of shoot blight severity and 89.8% control of canker incidence. Antibiotics oxytetracycline (OTC) and streptomycin (STM) did not provide consistent control in the second year in comparison to the first year. In the first year, both antibiotics, OTC (trunk injection and foliar spray) and STM were effective, providing 94.8%, 100% and 86.3% control of shoot blight, respectively. They also provided 100, 91 and 84% control of canker incidence, respectively. However, in the second they were not effective allowing 69 – 96% of shoot blight severity and 70 – 92% of canker incidence. Regardless of the inconsistency in the effectiveness of antibiotics, which are not recommended for shoot blight control due to risks of promoting antibiotic resistance, five preventive spray applications of RSE could be used on pear trees to prevent shoot blight and canker development. Thus, the RSE spray program we developed could serve as a valuable control tool that could help prevent sudden outbreaks of shoot blight during summer and pear tree death from fire blight cankers with no risk for pathogen resistance.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127267402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fire blight cankers are infected zones of dead bark on perennial branches, trunk, or rootstock that develop after fire blight pathogen Erwinia amylovora invades wood. Cankers can girdle the trunk, branches and rootstock leading to tree death and production losses, especially significant in high-density orchards. An accurate diagnosis of trunk and rootstock blight is a top challenge for apple growers because fire blight cankers can be visually misdiagnosed with cankers caused by less frequent Oomycete and fungal pathogens (e.g., Phytophthora spp., Botryosphaeria dothidea, B. obtusa, Valsa mali). In addition, detecting E. amylovora in apple rootstocks is essential because this pathogen also causes asymptomatic infections. Accurate fire blight diagnosis is necessary to inform the complete removal of infected trees from the orchard and help replanting efforts while preventing further pathogen dissemination. To determine apple tree losses caused by fire blight rootstock infections, PCR was used to detect E. amylovora in symptomatic and asymptomatic rootstocks for two years. Rootstock canker incidence and tree death were rated in selected infection foci on seven commercial apple orchards in New York. Each infection focus consisted of central rootstock-blighted tree and the nearest surrounding edge trees showing no rootstock blight. E. amylovora strains collected from these seven orchards and other orchards in New York were characterized. In the first year, most of the orchards showed E. amylovora detection rates of 10.7 – 45.3% in asymptomatic rootstocks on the edge trees immediately surrounding visibly infected i.e. rootstock-blighted central trees. One year later, 20.8 – 56.3% cankered rootstocks were detected on the edge trees and from zero to 35.4% dead edge trees were recorded. However, the PCR from sampled edge rootstocks one year later showed no pathogen detections. E. amylovora rootstock strains showed slight variability in enzymatic activity, copper sensitivity, virulence, and exopolysaccharide production. These results elucidate the role and importance of rootstock infections for apple tree survival, the presence of latent fire blight infections, and the valuable utility of molecular detection methods to assist apple tree removal after epidemics.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121275298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
