NAC proteins are involved in various aspects of plant growth and development, but little is known about how NAC proteins regulate the cell cycle. Here, we characterized ClNAC84 from C. lavandulifolium (an NAC transcription factor). ClNAC84 overexpression in C. lavandulifolium resulted in a semi-dwarf phenotype with shorter plant height, smaller leaf size, and smaller flower size than wild-type plants. The number of cells in the S phase during the cell cycle was less in ClNAC84-overexpression transgenic C. lavandulifolium than in wild-type C. lavandulifolium. This indicates that ClNAC84 overexpression can induce cell cycle arrest at the S and G2 phases. To elucidate the ClNAC84 regulatory network, ClMIP protein was shown to interact with ClNAC84 in vitro and in vivo. ClMIP overexpression in C. lavandulifolium also resulted in dwarfism and decreased cell numbers, and the expression level of ClKRP5 was higher in transgenic C. lavandulifolium than in wild-type plants. We also found that ClMIP can bind to the promoter of ClKRP5. Our data indicate that the interaction between ClNAC84 and ClMIP may promote ClKRP5 expression and inhibit S and G2 phases of the cell cycling.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126047325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pathogen infects apple trees through artificial or natural wounds. The most damaging phase of the disease is that cankers on main stems post-planting, most likely originating from infection in nurseries, can result in tree death in young orchards. Apple cultivars differ in their responses to the pathogen, which may be additionally affected by specific site factors. An experiment was conducted to study i) the susceptibility of seven cultivars to N. ditissima at three sites and ii) the effects of cold storage duration prior to planting on subsequent development of both main stem and peripheral cankers. Planting date had significant (albeit minimal effects) on the development of peripheral cankers only. Canker development differed greatly among the three sites and between the tested cultivars, with ‘Grenadier’ and ‘Golden Delicious’ being most resistant at all sites. The relative performance of cultivars in terms of canker development was generally consistent across the three sites. Nevertheless, the interaction between cultivar and site was still statistically significant for the development of main stem cankers, indicating that some site-specific factors may interact with cultivars to affect development of latent infections. Given the close proximity of the three sites (similar climatic conditions), the results indicate that further research is needed to investigate the effects of soil characteristics on canker development post-planting.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132519730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The level of these secondary metabolites is also affected by environmental factors such as light, which play a pivotal role in regulating plants' signaling pathways. In this study, we investigated the effects of different ratios of blue (B) to red (R) and white (W) light on physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of saffron in the flowering stage. Flowers' morphological properties were improved in plants grown under monochromatic B light. The highest content of total carotenoids, anthocyanins, and flavonoids was detected in plants grown under a high proportion of B light. The highest crocin content, especially the trans-crocetin ester isomer, was recorded in monochromatic B light-grown plants. However, the highest picrocrocin content was in both monochromatic R- and B light-grown plants. The highest safranal content was detected in plants grown under a high proportion of R light. Transcriptome analysis of secondary metabolism pathways showed that the transcript level of the genes was highly correlated with the content of the target metabolites. Monochromatic B light upregulated the expression of genes involved in crocin production (CsCCD2, CsALDH31l, and CsUGT2). However, the expression of CsUGT709G1, which is involved in picrocrocin and safranal pathways, was upregulated in plants grown under a high ratio of R light and W lights. In conclusion, monochromatic B light enhances the flowering rate, crocin (trans-crocetin ester), and picrocrocin content, which increases the quantity and quality of saffron products under controlled conditions.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133215623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
