As studies comparing these two systems are limited, this study explored the cultivation of five leafy vegetables—white leaf beets (Beta vulgaris var. cicla), hooker chives (Allium hookeri), basil (Ocimum basilicum), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), and spearmint (Mentha spicata)—in an indoor greenhouse facility using two different food production platforms: an aquaponic system (AS) with catfish (Silurus asotus) and a conventional hydroponic system (HS). The results showed that the plant growth in AS outperformed that in HS, while the general growth patterns in AS were significantly affected by the different light sources. In addition, the leaf yield of the herbal plants (basil and lemon balm) in AS was 60%–70% more than that in HS. The leaf growth of hooker chives in AS also showed significant improvement (200%) compared with that in HS. It appears that the nutrient sources provided by fish were remarkable, as the average concentration of NO3–N (64 mg/L) was easily achieved in AS. The proposed AS, therefore, would be a promising alternative to the production and supply of supplement organic food, ultimately contributing to promoting sustainable agriculture in a changing climate.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":" 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141825171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HTS advances have uncovered and improved understanding of virus biology, ecology, and evolution which is vital for viral disease management. Plant viruses continue to threaten global agricultural productivity and strict quarantine measures are essential to prevent the introduction and spread of virulent viruses around the world. The gradual decrease in HTS operational costs, including improved computational systems and automation through robotics, has facilitated the adoption of this tool for plant diagnostics, including its use in surveillance and quarantine programs. However, the speed of technology advancements and distinct HTS chemistries, laboratory procedures, data management, and bioinformatic analyses have proven challenging. In addition, the lack of viral species reference sequences, compared with the estimated number of distinct viral taxa, makes classification and identification of novel viruses difficult. There is a need for standardized HTS testing, especially within plant health programs. In this review, we consider the application of HTS in plant virology, explore the technical challenges faced and the opportunities for HTS in plant health certification. We propose standards for overcoming current barriers and for ensuring reliable and reproducible results. These efforts will impact global plant health by reducing the risk of introduction and the spread of damaging novel viruses.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"10 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141105539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the past, the diversified range of plant species, varieties, and agricultural practices allowed agriculture production and local food systems to tolerate moderate climate variability. Today, industrial farming relies on very limited genetic diversity for commercial production. Narrowing the genetic base leads to higher susceptibility to environmental changes and diseases.Heirloom cultivars survived climate variations and extreme conditions but were abandoned in favor of a handful of commercial cultivars that dominate the food industry and fit the standards of the global food system. From a climate change perspective, it would be important to conserve heirloom cultivars to preserve biodiversity and make greater genetic diversity available to farming, which will lead to resilience and adaptation.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"65 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139526732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resulting dispersal gradient is dependent on several factors including rainfall intensity, the nature of the plant canopy and its effects on splash, deposition, redistribution (secondary splash) and filtering. Gradients of spore dispersal with distance are important for understanding epidemics, and the primary dispersal gradient can shape an epidemic for several pathogen generations. However, microorganisms are difficult to trap, identify and enumerate efficiently. This makes it difficult to study the spread and dispersal of pathogens to aid in biosecurity responses and management of epidemics. We used macroconidia of Neonectria ditissima, the causal organism of apple canker, to explore patterns of rain-splash dispersal in tree canopies. We investigated the use of a fluorescent tracer dye, PTSA (1,3,6,8-pyrenetetrasulfonic acid), as a surrogate to conidia capture during natural and artificial rain events, and lens tissue as ‘surrogate leaves’ to recapture tracer dye. Conidia and dye were released from central point sources 2.5 m above the ground and recaptured in passive rainwater traps or artificial ‘leaves’. Quantile regression and exponential models were used to explore variation and dispersal gradients derived for both conidia and dye, with and without tree canopy and with natural or artificial precipitation. Estimated dispersal gradients were steeper with a flatter tail when no tree canopy was present, whereas presence of tree canopy resulted in more variation and shallower predicted dispersal gradients, with fatter tails, predicting potential dispersal to further distances from the source. The majority of conidia and dye were recaptured at less than 1 m from the source, but small concentrations of spores were detected up to 3 m and dye more than 6 m. High variation in natural conditions requires further investigation to fully quantify natural dispersal gradients. Nevertheless, these results show the merit of tracer dye, artificial leaves, and quantile regression as tools to estimate potential dispersal patterns of N. ditissima and other rain-splash dispersed microorganisms, considering rain-splash factors in real canopies and natural situations for predicting inoculum dispersal.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"35 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139003206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thirty-two common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) genotypes from the IRAD gene bank in Cameroon were evaluated for divergence in terms of their morpho-agronomic traits, fungal disease resistance, and bacterial disease resistance to assess the opportunity for genetic improvement of the crop. The trait associations were estimated using correlation coefficients and genotypes were classified into groups using cluster and principal component analyses. Seven qualitative and 16 quantitative traits comprising growth, phenological, yield, and disease variables were evaluated in this study. The qualitative markers revealed the degree of polymorphism among the 32 common bean genotypes. The number of phenotypic classes per character (Na) ranged from 2 to 18, with an average of 5.14. The expected gene diversity (He) ranged from 0.37 to 0.93 (mean = 0.56). The number of effective phenotypic classes (Ne) ranged from 1.82 to 14.22, with a mean of 3.85. An extensive range of variation was evident for the majority of traits, highlighting their utility for characterizing common bean germplasm. Many qualitative traits, including seed coat color, seed shape, and seed size, and also some quantitative traits of economic importance including seed yield, were found to be highly variable within the collection, with the MAC55 genotype displaying the highest yield (32.65 g per plant). Four genotypes, namely MAC55, BOA-5-1M6, FEB 192, and Banguem showed resistance to the two main common bean diseases, angular leaf spot and common blight. We detected highly significant correlations among several traits related to yield. A high broad-sense heritability was found for most of the quantitative traits. We carried out two-dimensional principal component analysis and used hierarchical clustering to group the analyzed germplasm according to their phenotypic similitudes. The evidence of agro-morphological diversity in the present collection and the identification of discriminant characters between the available germplasm through the use of PCA analysis have significant implications for establishing breeding schemes in common bean.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"32 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139250342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A combination of laboratory and field trials were conducted to examine the relationship between infection and status of apple lenticels. Fruit were hydrated and then inoculated, and climatic factors were compared with inoculations and natural infections in the field. In laboratory trials it was shown that increased lenticel density and size led to more infections. Hydration distended lenticel diameter, and dehydration contracted lenticels. A strong relationship with wind run, leaf wetness and temperature were shown to be important for laboratory inoculations of monthly harvested fruit, natural infections in trap fruit experiments, and monthly field inoculations. It was hypothesised that high wind run (> c. 240 km/day) reduced fruit susceptibility by promoting lenticel closure, and when lenticels were open, temperature limited the formation of an infection stroma. If the stroma did not form, postharvest expression of disease was negligible. Leaf wetness over 28 days was also an important factor for infection, probably because of the effect on micro-crack formation and resealing of lenticels during maturation by components of the cuticle. From these results, pre-harvest application of compounds that close lenticels could provide some control of bull’s eye rot without the need for fungicides.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126510201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, a study was initiated to develop high-quality lines and variety candidates through mutation breeding in the current Ayaş population. In this study, the effective mutation dose (EMD50) was found to be 150 Gy for seeds using a Cobalt-60 gamma ray source. The main mutant population was generated by applying EMD50. During the study, mutant lines selected by following the classical mutation breeding stages were evaluated in terms of yield and quality traits (antioxidant content, total soluble solid amount, fruit firmness, Brix, etc.) starting from the M4 stage. One of our aims was to determine and improve the phytonutrient content of field-grown tomatoes. The fruits of selected lines at the M4 stage were extracted by liquid-liquid partition and accelerated solvent extraction techniques and analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) in this study. It was found that 28 of the 29 mutant lines were significantly different from the control and mutant lines. Mutant lines 9-22, 8-90, 8-135, and 8-127 were determined to be the most promising for commercialization.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115363313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Viticulture, as agriculture in general, is highly dependent on climatic conditions, not only for yield but also for fruit quality, which is the most important factor affecting produce value at the farm-gate. This demands the development of novel plant breeding techniques that will lead to the accelerated production of more resilient grape varieties, as conventional breeding programs for perennials are often prolonged. Recent research has suggested that environmental conditions can activate a memory of stress that could result in a primed response to subsequent stress events. This is a process capable of increasing plant’s resilience to abiotic stimuli, allowing plants to better adapt to extreme environmental conditions. While the effect of priming has been observed in many plants, the underlying mechanisms are puzzling and seldom studied in perennial crops. A large body of research has been developed in the last decade linking response to stress, stress priming, and memory of stress with epigenetic mechanisms. This understanding of plant epigenetics has opened the door to the application of epigenetics to crop improvement, such as the use of epigenetic breeding for the generation of more resilient crops. Perennial crop agriculture in general, and viticulture in particular, would benefit from more in-depth knowledge on epigenetic memory of stress.","PeriodicalId":336423,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Horticulture","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130382744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
