This paper documents our recent experience that before investing in a new acquisition, it is important to check if the vintage seismic data can provide new insights with the latest in time processing and imaging technology. A case study in shallow waters offshore Mexico, illustrates how conventional marine streamer data can still be quite valuable when carefully reprocessed with the technology available today.","PeriodicalId":335882,"journal":{"name":"Second EAGE Workshop on Deepwater Exploration in Mexico: Knowledge transfer and collaboration from shelf to deepwater","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127655301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This coring plan aimed to retrieve 330 feet of top quality sample, mainly composed by soft, unconsolidated sand, distributed in two bodies from Eocene age. Proper characterization of both targets was critical for pay zone delimitation, and not enough data was gather from previous wells. The application design includes a heavy-duty core barrel, capable to deliver 5 ¼” OD sample, a core bit with low invasion & anti whirl features, an anti-jamming system focused in reducing risk of unplanned trips. This configuration allows increasing the core barrel to 120 feet that is twice the average length used historically in the country and will reduce in half the rig cost for the whole operation. At the well's ends, a total of 340 feet sample was catch in three runs, obtaining a 100% recovery rate. The coring job performance fulfilled the project requirements successfully and avoided a costly contingency with an estimated saving of 5 million dollars.","PeriodicalId":335882,"journal":{"name":"Second EAGE Workshop on Deepwater Exploration in Mexico: Knowledge transfer and collaboration from shelf to deepwater","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124274608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With these challenges on the table and without worldwide records of jobs alike this operation, the possible risks that could arise during the mill out of these three casing were evaluated. The success of the operation was implicit in the planning and both companies knew it. To properly analyze these structures, we combine regional interpretations with established salt tectonic principles to constrain the timing and processes of trap formation. Two perpendicular structural systems can be identified when looking at a regional fault map of the Bay of Campeche, one related to NE-directed Chiapas Fold Belt compression and one related to a NW-directed gravitational toe-thrust system. Both systems occur between the Miocene and Present Day. The orientations of salt structures in Blocks 29 & 11 are significantly influenced by these two structural systems and two structural domains were identified. The eastern domain contains a polygonal pattern suggesting that this area was influenced by shortening from both structural systems whereas the western domain has consistent NE-SW trending structures that were only affected by the gravitational toe-thrust system. Although each minibasin has its own unique evolution and likely experienced early passive diapirism, our study clearly shows that Miocene to Present Day shortening is critical to the formation of traps and allochthonous salt emplacement. We then conclude with a sequential structural restoration to illustrate these processes.","PeriodicalId":335882,"journal":{"name":"Second EAGE Workshop on Deepwater Exploration in Mexico: Knowledge transfer and collaboration from shelf to deepwater","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130334918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
