In order to overcome these barriers, the low-cost, Do-It-Yourself alternative input device FLipMouse has been developed. With this input device, people with restricted motor capabilities of the upper limbs can access personal computers, smartphones or consumer electronic devices either by lips or finger movement. The FLipMouse is based on a zero-way joystick and a sip-and-puff sensor. Further- more, two external switches can be attached for the creation of additional input signals. An integrated universal infrared transceiver allows control of various consumer electronic de- vices without any additional hard- or software. Two operational modes of the FLipMouse as well as a graphical user interface for configuration provide high flexibility for individual settings according to the user's needs. Using a standardized communication protocol, raw sensor data from the device can be transferred to desired software applications for further processing and analysis. Feasibility checks of the FLipMouse in different user scenarios (gaming, desktop control, smartphone control and playing a musical instrument) with people with different limited motor capabilities con- firmed a high user satisfaction, several of the test subjects continued to use the device on a daily basis. In a quantitative evaluation, the mouse cursor positioning efficiency was tested. The results indicate that the FLipMouse is an affordable, fully functional alternative input device, which offers a high degree of adaptability not provided by similar assistive products available on the market or described in related research.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126095362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teo's behavior can be remotely controlled by the caregiver or autonomously activated by effect of internal sensors or an external depth sensor. Teo has a soft body that can react to different types of touch (e.g., hugs, punches, or slaps); it can move freely on the floor and can manifest emotional reactions (through light, sound, and movement effects). Our robot can be used for therapy-driven game-based activities as well as free play. The latter involve spontaneous interaction with Teo and free exploration of its affordances, to facilitate children's familiarization with the robot and to promote socialization, positive emotions, and self-expression skills. The paper describes the design of Teo and examples of free play activities that can be performed with the robot. We also report the main results of the exploratory studies that have been performed at 2 therapeutic centers and have involved 11 children with NDD, highlighting the benefits of free play with Teo.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129904504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our particular interest lies in the design of inclusive toys and games that disabled and non-disabled children can play together and which foster positive interactions between children across difference. We explore the challenges and opportunities associated with working in a transdisciplinary mode, where knowledge production evolves from dynamic tension between different disciplinary perspectives and those of non-academic stakeholders. We argue that the latter is of particular importance within any design process that seeks to provide accessibility and empower users. Such transdisciplinarity involves an upstream approach to the involvement of non-academic interests in the design process and knowledge production, rather than limiting the engagement of/with users to the dissemination end point stage of research (Barry, forthcoming). The paper draws upon two case studies of projects conducted by the authors. Both projects involve the use of co-operative inquiry [14] with children and we seek to extract the pedagogical implications of both projects for future design, including that within the field of ICT and digital technologies, with and for children.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130380716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this scenario, building collaborative relationships among the school community as a whole is a very important process, being crucial to better understand the role of families in potentiating learning in the different contexts beyond school. This study aims to understand how the social web can facilitate the development of these communities by enhancing the learning of new skills by parents, students and professionals. Following a two cycle action research methodology, the authors developed and analyzed the evolutionary dynamics of an online community at a public school with students with deafness and identified drivers of change and improvement. Evidence was collected as to the added value of using the online community for the communication between parents and professionals and between parents and children, generating further support for the learning of children with deafness. The results have also indicated the need to promote greater training for professionals and families concerning the implementation of parental involvement dynamics between home and school.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131327463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most critical issues is represented by falls, and the development of fall risk estimation and fall detection tools can increase safety of elderly. The aim of this work is to develop fall risk estimation and fall detection tools using data extracted from wearable and vision-based sensors. First, the synchronization issue between heterogeneous data captured by different sensors is addressed, and a straightforward synchronization procedure based on time delays affecting the samples is provided. Then, fall detection algorithms and a fall risk estimation tool based on Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, exploiting wearable Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) and an RGB-Depth sensor (Microsoft Kinect) are proposed. The fall detection tool is evaluated on 11 healthy adults simulating 4 different falls and performing 4 activities of daily living, while the TUG is tested on 20 healthy subjects. Encouraging preliminary results are obtained with data acquired in laboratory environment. The tools are privacy preserving since only depth and skeleton information captured by Kinect are processed.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124779452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective is to evaluate the elders' interaction with the most popular social network in the world (Facebook), using a different approach to the proposed by the HCI community: communicability. In our case, we use younger volunteers (non-elder adults) to compare the results. As a result, there was a necessity to review some interface aspects, such as the meaning system adopted by the designer. It was also realized the need to establish clearer criteria for the information organization and to correct usability and accessibility problems that influence on the communication failures that occurred during the elders' interaction with the social network.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"100 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131000879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper it is made an analysis of what factors influences HE students to give up of their academic career. Therefore, it is presented through ACACIA project, namely the CADEP centre, solutions to identify students with common dropout characteristics or profiles and methods supported by institutional cooperative approaches focused on such students' factors with the goal of preventing future dropouts. To accomplish the installation of the proposed CADEP centre it is presented a framework centralised in its Convoca module, which proposes a solution to articulate, organize and develop cooperation centres inside universities and services that integrates the students' needs and their inclusion. Additionally, a scenario reflecting up two current situations able to justify the need of having such centres is presented. In the future, after having such centres deployed it is expected to reduce dropout levels and increase extra motivation in students to conduct innovations creation and development for society inclusion supported by local, regional national and even international cooperative initiatives.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"274 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116118359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
