Users with certain motor or visual impairments may be unable to use certain text entry interfaces such as the small virtual keyboards on mobile phones effectively due to challenges hitting small targets. Despite the vast amount of research into text entry, no efforts have explored the so-called Russian tap-codes, or knock codes, which were commonly used to communicate between prison inmates. Tapping does not require the user to hit a specific target. This study proposes a theoretical framework for classifying text entry designs. The framework is used to explore 16 text entry designs, namely the classic Russian tap code and design variations exploiting more recent results in text entry research and the context of current hardware, allowing unfeasible designs to be easily eliminated.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131572765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The more erudite know beforehand what they intend to explore when visiting a monument, a museum or a city. On the other side, least erudite visitors usually know and are capable of expressing some of their preferences but do not realize exactly what to see and explore. Physical and psychological limitations also make cultural products not interesting or suitable for all people. In this sense, this work proposes a set of methods which take into account the network of the local to be explored (e.g., museum or a city) and the classification of the Points of Interest (POIs) to build a set of optimal walks translating the users 'preferences and limitations. The problem is formulated as a multi-criteria optimization problem and a set of results shows, for a museum and an urban space, the validity of the proposed methods.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133637393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The business benefits of the cloud extend to people with disabilities and industry needs to improve access to the cloud by ensuring that their cloud services are not limited to their own ecosystem, but they are following the W3C web accessibility requirements based on WCAG 2.0 and other requirements. The purpose of this paper is firstly to know the current situation of cloud computing and web accessibility from the perspective of the company, reviewing the existing literature. Secondly, we analyze the situation of the accessibility of cloud computing from a double scope: the European Union and, in particular, the situation in SMEs. Finally, the strategic positions of the European Commission about the consequences of the adoption of the cloud paradigm will be reviewed.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115441179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This usability evaluation instrument is part of a comprehensive framework for the design, development and evaluation of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) products and services for older adults. The ICF-US has been previously validated for self-perceived usability. The aims of the study reported in this paper were to verify if ICF-US is also suitable for usability evaluation of AAL products or services considering the opinion of the evaluators about the users. The results indicate that the ICF-US can be useful tool for usability evaluation of AAL products or services based on the evaluators' perspective about the users' performance.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121474371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, issues of accessibility, functionality and control appear to deter the use of existing systems by some parts of the older population. In this paper, we describe a literature review and co-design exploration to understand and address these issues. Using a methodology we call Focusgroup+, we presented new product concepts to both digitally engaged and digitally unengaged groups of older people for critique and re-design. The concepts were based on familiar devices and included a Photo Phone concept for multimedia communication, a TV Talk concept for social TV, and a Twitter Well concept for broadcast text messaging. Findings from the re-design exercise show that groups responded differently to the same concepts based on their existing skills and equipment, and took them in different design directions to accommodate common preferences for meaningful communication with relatively small groups of key contacts. This led to a diversity of both appliances and apps that better reflected the diversity of participants themselves.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129048471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose an extension of the schema.org ontology as a new crowdsourcing approach for engaging and motivating a larger population to participate in evaluating the accessibility of a place. An architecture of the proposed model is presented and its details are discussed. This article briefly overviews recent policies, initiatives and recommendations that address the use of digital media in promoting a more inclusive higher education (HE) system; the review focuses especially on actions involving HE students and that promote innovative uses of digital media solutions that provide flexible delivery models and alternative ways of communicating, helping students from a variety of non-traditional backgrounds and contexts to actively participate and engage with HE in a more open and inclusive approach. The article also presents preliminary results of an exploratory survey on how Portuguese public HEI websites present the challenge of inclusion, namely through digital media. The results of the review show the increasing importance for HE of ensuring open and inclusive student experiences through the use of digital media, although it seems that there is a lack of policies and information widely available about how this can be achieved, especially for publics other than the learners with disabilities or special education needs. Also, the analysis of the HEI websites does not seem to reveal a great concern in presenting HEI as open, flexible and inclusive for all learners, particularly using digital media. Drawing on the revision undertaken and on the collected data, the authors make recommendations for future research and propose an action plan towards the development of a future research project.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"239 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131691094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These communities are not only people with the more obvious accessibility problems but it may also include Indians (with communication/cultural problems to enter and perform well in universities made by and to white people) and other groups. The software-enabled environment previously mentioned, named Empodera, is a small part of a bigger infrastructure called CADEP, which represents the main goal pursued by the ACACIA project. ACACIA motivations are briefly introduced in this paper; the CADEP is presented, followed by a more deep discussion about Empodera. The CADEP, as a whole, is to be assessed in 3 countries of Latin America (LA), but Empodera will also have specific evaluations in the Amazon area in Brazil, involving community of Indians who want to be or are already students at the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA). It was designed as a primary school kit to engage children from 8 to 10 years of age in manipulating, discovering and building narratives associated with an archaeological find, a mysterious object found at an excavation site. The game was experimented in a primary school in Siena (Italy). Initial trials involved twenty-two 8-year-old children and their teachers. The group included 6 children with mild cognitive disabilities and learning disorders. Children were divided in 4 groups, each of which was facilitated by an expert. Each group included at least one child with a mild cognitive disability. Results show that the game was inclusive and collaborative, since all children contributed to the achievement of the final goal, regardless their cognitive ability. Interestingly, there were no remarkable differences in retention of the story. All children remembered most of the details of the story, even if the children with a mild cognitive disability summarized it in fewer sentences, whilst children with typical development showed richer narrative competencies. Manipulation and collaboration were the winning factor in the game. By building and constructing together, children successfully mastered abstract elements of the story as well as very concrete building blocks of the game.","PeriodicalId":334897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Info-exclusion","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131803529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
