Furthermore, access to such technology keeps on becoming easier and cheaper: design kits, design examples, data sheets and application notes all are just a mouse-click away. This, however, did not make learning and education of computer engineering techniques any easier: the basics of computer engineering remain the same, but the tower of complexity keeps growing higher. This paper highlights creativity as a fundamental quality that computer engineering students need to cultivate to master modern technology. We propose open-ended design practice as an essential tool to nurture creativity. We report on the results and lessons learned from an embedded-systems design course which we organized for the past 7 years. An important observation is that creativity has an exponential impact on the quality of design delivered by students, when quality is measured by factors such as performance, power, and cost. This means that the best students make designs that are literally orders of magnitude better than those from weaker students, even for students in the same class and the same curriculum. In this paper, we do not intend to explain the causes of this difference. Due to the natural segregation of computing blocks on these devices as digital vs. analog blocks, microcontroller-based systems can be taught in 2 terms, for digital and analog systems design separately. The presented course is designed to combine analog and digital design concepts in one single course that lasts for 10 weeks, using the PSoC3 board. The course is designed to include (i) lab tasks and (ii) weekly assignments. Based on the course syllabus, the students are assigned lab tasks following a selected lab from the PSoC3 Lab Manual each week. A cloud based C/C++ compiler is used for software development and breadboards are used with breakout boards containing common I/O devices. Simple C++ APIs are provided for all I/O hardware interfaces along with code examples for each I/O device. Studies show that students may lose interest in science, mathematics, engineering and technology (STEM) as early as elementary school, believing that these areas are not innovative or creative. Using the CDIO Initiative framework for engineering education, this study looks at the development of a creative, project-based learning program called Exploring Electrical Engineering, designed to teach an introduction to electronics and electricity through integration with other disciplines, such as English, social studies, physical education and fine arts.
