However, the availability of polymer optical fibers (POFs) makes it possible to further simplify mirror preparation operations so that massive production of such low cost side couplers is feasible. Both the conventional reflection and the total internal reflection can easily be implemented through mirrors formed inside a POF using mechanical or other types of etching techniques. We show two conventional micro-mirrors which an embedded into a POF through a serious of microcutting, masking, metallic coating, and polymer refilling. A mirror can be formed either by satisfying the total internal reflection condition of the etched interface or by metal deposition using a conventional metallic mirror coating process.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127308555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To summarize, multiple-wavelength InGaAs DBR QW VCSEL arrays with low threshold (420 /spl mu/A) and wide wavelength span (44.8nm) are achieved by using improved p-mirror design and AlAs wet oxidation. Through the device size control and less heat dissipation from the low-voltage p-DBR laser, single-mode operation is also obtained over a 20.8nm span.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129950266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measurement of laser parameters of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser using an external mirror 利用外反射镜测量垂直腔面发射激光器的激光参数

{"title":"Measurement of laser parameters of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser using an external mirror","authors":"K. Ha, Y.H. Lee","doi":"10.1109/LEOS.1996.565203","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/LEOS.1996.565203","url":null,"abstract":"The threshold gain and the cavity loss are important parameters for the optimum design of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL). Here we try to determine the cavity loss by varying the amount of light fed back to the VCSEL using an external mirror. The tested VCSEL consists of a superlattice active region surrounded by AlAs/Al/sub 0.3/Ga/sub 0.7/As distributed Bragg reflectors. The nonlinear gain effect is introduced in estimating the internal parameters of VCSELs. Since most VCSELs operate at a carrier density much higher than the transparency level, the nonlinear gain effect should be nonnegligible and be considered. Therefore, this method is appropriate even for a large threshold-gain (like the VCSEL) and/or a large amount of the feedback light (more than a few percents).","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128913323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors have developed high-performance 1.3 /spl mu/m laser diodes which have the potential to render the high-cost components inside the transmitter dispensable and greatly reduce the cost of transmitters. Low-cost fabrication, tight lot-to-lot control, excellent device yield, and uniform parameter distributions have been simultaneously achieved. With further structure and process optimizations, we have reduced threshold currents to as low as 6 mA at 25/spl deg/C, while maintaining high T/sub 0/ of 85 K.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132395638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We report the first room temperature, continuous wave operation of an optical flip-flop in which there are two stable lasing states, in close analogy to a S-R latch in electrical circuits. Bistable laser diodes have important applications as optical memory elements in future high-speed all-optical time-division switching systems, as demonstrated by Suzuki, see J. of Lightwave Technology, vol.LT-4, p.894, 1986. Compared with the two section, single mode bistable laser diode used in their experiment which must be turned off electrically, this device can be reset by the application of an optical trigger and is therefore more flexible.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132408713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
