The type-II QC lasers can have a higher radiative efficiency because the phonon relaxation process is greatly suppressed in an interband transition. Here, we report the first observation of mid-IR electroluminescence in such a type-II QC laser structure. We illustrates the band diagram of two periods of an InAs-AlSb-GaSb type-II QC laser diode under a forward bias.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124288044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The simultaneous use of the entire channel by users in an optical CDMA system using ultrashort pulses requires minimization of dispersive effects. After establishing a dispersion model, a method of intentionally widening the transmitted pulses to counteract pulse dispersion in an optical CDMA system while maintaining the same high data rate and the same number of users is suggested. It is demonstrated that these widened pulses are much less susceptible to dispersion.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117227598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One key underlying technology which has enabled these systems is the introduction of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier EDFA. A glaring disadvantage of the EDFA is that the gain is not uniform with wavelength, causing a significant power and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) differential among many channels. We will discuss our demonstrations of dynamically equalizing three 2.5 Gbit/s WDM channels in which the channel power differential is reduced from 20 dB to only 1 dB over a distance of 2,500 km by placing an acousto optical filter in an EDFA.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"250 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116146944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These pulses are the best approximation to impulse excitation ever used in ranging studies. The absolute bandwith is also larger than any other previously reported. The relatively short wavelengths of the THz pulse permit target features of less than 1 mm to be observed, making this technique ideal for scale ranging measurements since realistic target to wavelength ratios can be maintained. Furthermore, the measurement window achieved by the optolectronic gating technique enables only the scattered signal from the target to be detected, providing background free measurements.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121967016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A heat resistant, polymer diffusing fiber tip has been developed that produces an homogenous light emission over its light diffusing length. The light emitted from the diffuser is equally distributed into the tissue with no hot spots that would cause carbonization to occur. With this approach we have demonstrated large lesions, with no carbonization produced in reasonably short (about 5 min.) laser exposures.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"17 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116859659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiments are carried out using an integrated far-field and near-field microscope. Gold coated fiber tips are used as scanning probes for both STM and SNOM signal collection and the tip to sample separation is controlled within the tunneling distance. We additionally placed a magnetic field coil around the sample holder, which produces a DC field up to 1 kOe. This allows us to study MO properties of magnetic thin films as a function of applied field for both far field Kerr observation and scanning near-field imaging.","PeriodicalId":332726,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings LEOS'96 9th Annual Meeting IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128388533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
