These systems are often poorly documented and not understood thoroughly by the individuals charged with maintaining them. Unfortunately, these systems cannot simply be turned off and replaced with new, modern systems that utilize the latest technology. The legacy systems always contain embedded business rules that are a key part of how the organization does business. In order to maintain and eventually replace these systems, we must first completely understand what it is that they actually do. This is where analysis tools and methods like HyperCode can be very useful. The goal of this paper is to introduce the reader to the concept of HyperCode and to fully describe its potential uses within a typical IS organization. HyperCode can be described as a rendering of program source code in a HyperText-linked format that allows for easy navigation through complex procedure calls and data declarations. In a software maintenance environment, the preliminary investigation of a software problem often takes much more time than does the actual code change. HyperCode allows for much quicker learning and understanding of program logic. It also allows organizations to bring new programmers up to speed quickly by allowing them to view examples of standardized code. HyperCode provides programmers with the ability to more quickly (and thoroughly) desk check programs before intensive testing. It utilizes an organization's data dictionary to create a popup definition (in the HyperCode file) for each program variable or command. These powerful capabilities dramatically reduce the amount of time required for the extraction of business rules from legacy code. HyperCode also acquaints systems professionals with the advantages of using the PC as an analysis tool. This can open the door to utilizing many of the exceedingly powerful applications including PC compilers, CASE tools and client-server database applications. Because many of the currently available HyperText formats are accessible through the Internet and World Wide Web, HyperCode repositories become a feasible enterprise-wide tool. Thus, software fault tolerance (SWFT) must be employed in developing complex safety-critical applications. However, developing applications which are capable of tolerating software errors is a challenging task because the developers have to conquer not only the complexity of the application but also the complexity of fault-tolerance protocols. A middleware which provides SWFT services and establishes a well-defined interface with the application modules will allow the application developer to focus solely on the application complexity. This paper presents such a middleware consisting of reusable SWFT components. It also explores the way these components interface with the application in order to tolerate faults in the application. Recent research has shown that the higher order neural networks (HONN) have numerous advantages over other neural network approaches in respect of the object recognition with invariant of the object's position size, and in-plane rotation. The major limitation of HONNs is that the number of connected weights is too large to store on most machines. For N/spl times/N image, the memory needed to store the connections is proportional to N/sup 6/. This huge memory requirement limits the HONN's application to large scale images. In this paper, we have developed an integrated method which combines the bi-directional log-polar mapping and HONN pattern recognizer. It reduces the HONN memory requirement from O(N/sup 6/) to O(N/sup 2/). The proposed method has been successfully verified. Periodic technology insertion helps to remedy parts and performance obsolescence by keeping a fielded system more in tune with commercial designs. The benefits of keeping a design close to the commercial marketplace are many, but the primary results are reduced parts costs and reduced design labor costs. Unfortunately, a recurring problem with technology insertion efforts is that the government does not own the data rights to the original design, which makes form, fit, and functional compatibility requirements difficult to fulfill by any but the original supplier of the system. If government ownership is maintained by using an independent design agent, lower costs are possible, since the resultant system is not tied to a single manufacturing source. With governmental ownership of the design, the government can shop for low cost production. A downside to governmental ownership of the design exists if selecting a production source and first-article qualification lengthens the procurement cycle. These delays build obsolescence into the system. This problem can be eliminated by selecting a preferred manufacturing source early in the technology insertion design phase. Having the preferred source manufacture the first articles allows the reprocurement data package, the design, and the production line to be qualified simultaneously. This paper details the use of technology insertion, government ownership of independent design agent produced designs, and preferred manufacturing sources as the basis for a cohesive business plan to economically reduce parts and performance obsolescence problems in aging military systems. The weak components of the link (antenna gain and multipath fading) have been examined. The weapons to combat negative link margin are increased antenna gain, lower system noise figure, FEC and, diversity. Input noise figure is about as low as it can go, due to the inherent loss of the SATCOM duplexer. To maintain hemispherical coverage, additional antennas must be combined with quadrature diversity. This paper describes the status and use of engineered nonlinear optical materials, particularly PPLN, and their impact on quasi-phasematched nonlinear optical devices. Recent successes with these materials include high-power optical parametric oscillators widely tunable over the technologically important mid-infrared spectral range 1-5 /spl mu/m. The effects of variations of structural parameters such as index and/or gain coupling strengths, facet reflectivities, and corrugation phase angles on external optical feedback sensitivity are studied. Quarter-wave-shifted index-coupled DFB lasers exhibit low external optical feedback sensitivity for large index coupling coefficients and high facet reflectivities. Pure gain-coupled DFB lasers perform better than the uniform index-coupled DFB lasers without any phase-shifting structure but worse than /spl lambda//4 phase-shifted index-coupled lasers with high coupling strengths. External optical feedback sensitivity of complex-coupled lasers is a sensitive function of the structural parameters and varies significantly with the index-to-gain coupling ratio and the total coupling.
