Students should be given fewer \"answers\" and more \"tools\"-tools for self-teaching and for synthesising, framing, and revising knowledge.' This paper presents a prototype case which addresses these issues by providing tools that support the access, integration and application of knowledge in a medical context. One course was offered using conventional scheduled lectures and laboratories; the second in an independent study mode. Results show that the independent study students performed as well as those in the lecture course. The self authored approach provides a flexible environment in which the software can be developed over a relatively long time frame. This enables an academic with limited resources to develop and implement an effective software package in a series of steps. The motivation for introducing the multimedia tools is based on a set of educational initiatives which can most effectively be implemented through the use of multimedia. A monitoring program has been implemented to help to define future educational initiatives and to indicate the effectiveness of those initiatives that are being implemented. The paper describes the development and experience of a multimedia computer assisted learning package for teachers training in pneumatics. The main feature of the package lies in the explanation of the dynamic nature of abstract pneumatic concepts by making use of the animation on the flowing of air particles inside pneumatic components within a circuit from which the circuit operation can be explained clearly. Analog computation was invented to solve a problem in the real world. The best known early model of a biological system showed that a computer would be necessary to study real systems. Now that computation power is abundant, the complexity of simulations has risen to provide realism. Connections with the real world are essential in testing the simulation.
