However, the extent to which its introduction in the classroom has progressed has been constrained by several internal problems as well as factors external to the teaching institution. In Victoria (Australia), a group of universities in collaboration with the government are studying such issues related to the introduction of multimedia in education. At the university department level, a variety of 'internal' management, staff and student related issues and problems do exist. The system supports exploratory type of learning and provides an adaptive environment that allows the user to navigate the hypertext system effectively. It involves static display of bitmaps, the integration of hypertext, sound and video by means of multimedia techniques. There are many benefits in this approach because students already tend to do significant amounts of Internet surfing and are familiar with the usage of Web sites and browsers. Therefore online instruction for their coursework using this all pervasive computer network which may be accessed from almost anywhere is a powerful and beneficial low cost alternative to other forms of computer aided learning. The key aims of this package development are to provide a compact and self contained package of instruction in the features and facilities provided by the C programming language together with an introduction to the Unix programming environment with its vast range of utilities and command interpreter shells. Computer Based Training (CBT) can help to meet these demands but until now development costs have been prohibitive. A possible way of producing lower cost CBTs for universities is for lecturers to develop it themselves. This would also ensure a close match between the content and the university syllabus. This paper describes a project in which ten multimedia CBT programs were developed by lecturers in the Technical University of Lisbon (IST). It provides some summary statistics which illustrate a wide range of reader behaviour. The explanations of such behaviour are, no doubt complex, and sifting some useful information from the data is not simple. Some success has been obtained in the use of a simple stochastic model based on transition matrices, and some of the hypotheses addressed and suggested by this model, are discussed. The authors feel that the transition matrix approach may provide a valuable means of matching multimedia design to the patterns of use for which they are aimed.","PeriodicalId":332016,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE International Conference on Multi Media Engineering Education.
