The relative permittivity, polarization hysteresis, electric field induced strain, lattice spacing and phase transition behavior of the irradiated copolymer films were studied. With regards to the dielectric and polarization behaviors, the copolymer film can be converted from a typical ferroelectric to a relaxor ferroelectric upon irradiation. This implies that the high-energy protons can break up the coherent polarization domains in the normal ferroelectric copolymer into nano-sized regions. Besides, the XRD data showed that the solid-state phase transition from the polar phase to nonpolar phase is induced in the copolymer during irradiation in which the lattice spacing increases significantly. The electric field induced phase transformation of the nano-sized regions between the polar and nonpolar phase leads to a high electrostrictive strain observed in the irradiated copolymers.","PeriodicalId":331115,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 11th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132868718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present paper the Thermally Stimulated Depolarization Currents (TSDC) spectra of tetramethoxysilane based silica gel at different hydration degrees (h=25 to 0. 15 g/sub water//g/sub dry material/) have been monitored in the range 100-300 K, then analyzed and compared with those recorded for myoglobin, lysozyme and lipase embedded in the same matrix. The results obtained allow to identify up to three energetically distinct families of water molecules trapped in the gel network and, in the spectra of encapsulated proteins, to distinguish the contributions coming from the protein aqueous microenvironment and from the water dipoles directly related to the included protein structure.","PeriodicalId":331115,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 11th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126955495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With assuming a layer at the surface that shows no ferroelectricity, the thickness dependence of the dielectric properties was analyzed. The temperature dispersion of the dielectric permittivity of the surface layer was estimated as well as its thickness. It was shown that the surface layer shows a small relaxation at the same temperature as that of the molecular motion in the bulk amorphous region, while the molecular motion is rather limited in the surface layer.","PeriodicalId":331115,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 11th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115187767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The samples studied were films of cellular polypropylene (PP) and of porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), with thicknesses between 50 and 100 /spl mu/m. In some cases, multilayers consisting of one of these polymers plus an additional air or solid layer were also investigated. Results show that single layers of cellular PP, metalized on both sides, have piezoelectric d/sub 33/-constants of up to 350 pC/N while such samples of porous PTFE have much lower constants. Multilayers consisting of one cellular or porous layer plus an air layer exhibit significantly larger constants, exceeding 20,000 pC/N, due to the softness of the air. While the d/sub 33/-constant of the multilayer systems decreases with load due to the compression of the softer layer, cellular PP shows fairly constant d/sub 33/ values for static pressures of up to 10 kPa thus indicating a rather large linear regime of the nonlinear stress-strain relationship. In this static pressure range a linear frequency response of the cellular foils was found if the foils were unstretched or under constant stress during the measurement. Stretching of the cellular PP foils results in a significant increase of the d/sub 33/-constants and thus represents an optimization method for the piezoelectric activity.","PeriodicalId":331115,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 11th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115445982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Charge storage in biopolymers i.e. the bioelectret state has been demonstrated in a variety of biomolecules e.g. amino acid derivatives, proteins, polypeptides, benzene derivatives, aromatic polyimides etc. and a number of methods have been used for these studies. In the present paper results of our studies on the charge storage or bioelectret state in diastase an enzyme, dextrin a polysaccharide and folic acid - a vitamin using TSDC technique will be examined considering the effect of hydration on TSDC peaks for the role of bound water in polarization storage. All the biopolymers studied here have been found to store a large amount of polarization through bound water present in three different states (i) the structured water strongly bound on the back bound of the biopolymer (ii) the multiple hydrogen bonded intermediate bound water and (iii) the weakly bound water absorbed on the surface of the biopolymer. Further studies on a variety of biopolymers may establish the role of bound water in bioelectret state.","PeriodicalId":331115,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 11th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116077738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The As/sub 2/Se/sub 3/ layers are characterized by gradual decrease of /spl epsiv/ with frequency and increase with temperature. A broad maximum is registered on tg/spl delta/-f dependence. At low frequencies f<10/sup -1/ Hz the loss factor increases with temperature. For modified system As/sub 2/Se/sub 3/Bi/sub x/ much greater decrease of /spl epsi/ with frequency and increase with temperature is found. tg/spl delta/-f dependence of this system demonstrates no maximum and at frequencies f<10/sup -1/ Hz the loss factor decreases with temperature. The mentioned above results confirm the assumption that the metal dopants act as positively charge impurities.","PeriodicalId":331115,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 11th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125242653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Observed TSC spectra, ITSPD and morphology for these films remarkably depended on the solvent evaporation rate. At high evaporation rates, charge retention power of these films was large and their appearance became white and cloudy. Fine cellular structure of about 300 /spl mu/m formed by Benard convection was also found in the films cast at high evaporation rates. Deep charge traps were found in the central parts of the Benard convection cells by a charge-visualization technique with fine dye particles. While, at low evaporation rates, charge decay in the PMMA cast films was fast and the films were transparent in their appearance. Annealing the cloudy PMMA films at 130/spl deg/C for 1 hour destructed their cellular structure and made them transparent.","PeriodicalId":331115,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 11th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125366453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
