Green","doi":"10.1109/ICPST.2000.897104","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICPST.2000.897104","url":null,"abstract":"This paper addresses two issues in operation of a unified power flow controller (UPFC), enhancement of fault recovery and controller design accounting for filter dynamics. Performance of a UPFC is improved by a temporary modification of the UPFC into double static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) in order to double its capability in fault recovery mode. A battery is required as an energy source in the DC link of the double SSSC. The size of the battery for the SSSC has been be investigated. It was found that the double SSSC in fault recovery mode has almost twice the performance of the UPFC and the size of battery for the UPFC is reasonable for grid scale use. With the double SSSC in fault recovery mode, a combination control mode is suggested for the UPFC. One of the important parts of the UPFC is the filter at the output of the inverter. The function of the UPFC filter is to attenuate the harmonics generated by the inverter. In this paper a harmonic trap filter together with a low-pass filter are applied to the UPFC and investigated. Single-phase models are used to design cut-off frequencies whilst the d-q model is included in the UPFC controller design. It was found that if the filter dynamics are neglected in the control design, then the controllers response will be different. The test system used is a one-machine, two transmissions lines and an infinite busbar. All of the simulations were implemented using the EMTP. Additionally Matlab and Simulink programming environment were used to provide transfer function simulation for the controller design. The motion equation of a train set is used to solve the mechanical power consumption along the main line according to the operation timetable, the passenger ridership, and various types of operation resistance. The dynamic load demand of traction transformers is derived by executing the DC load flow analysis for the network consisting of rectifiers, conducting rails, car-borne inverters, and three-phase induction motors. The AC load flow simulation is then applied to find the loading of main transformers in the substations. The unit commitment is applied to derive the proper transformer capacity to meet the annual system peak power demand and provide sufficient capacity reserve. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, the Tamshui-Hsintien line of Taipei MRT network is selected for the design of MRT main transformers. It is found that the loading factor of main transformers has been enhanced dramatically and the cost effectiveness of transformer investment over the life cycle has been obtained.","PeriodicalId":330989,"journal":{"name":"PowerCon 2000. 2000 International Conference on Power System Technology. The method to generate interference on an optical fiber cable by lightning stroke was analyzed. Different grounding methods were comprehensively discussed by a numerical calculation method. The ideal grounding method for optical fiber cable is to ground the internal strengthening core and the outer metal sheath in the meantime. The electrical field intensity applied inside the optical fiber cable increases with the soil resistivity. The frequency of the interference source is an important factor to affect the interference electrical field generated inside the optical fiber cable. During the last few years, there has been a trend of continuous increase of transformer failures. It is therefore vital to correctly diagnose their incipient faults for safety and reliability of an electrical network. Various faults could occur in a transformer such as overheating, partial discharge and arcing, which can generate various fault-related gases. From dissolved gas analysis, the faults may be determined. The conventional interpretation methods such as IEC codes cannot determine the fault in many cases, especially if there is more than one type of fault existing in a transformer. This paper presents a fuzzy logic tool that can be used to diagnose multiple faults in a transformer and monitor the trend. In this paper, the parallel tabu search is proposed to evaluate them efficiently.
