Research was conducted by the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals during summer 2005 to explore the power negotiations between pub-hostesses and society, their employers, and customers. Thirty pub-hostesses were interviewed and 25 pubs observed. Foucault's theory of power relations is used to explain the dynamics observed among the parties. The findings indicate that pub-hostess can only exercise weak resistance to the limitations imposed on them by the various parties, and that to improve their situation, changes at the structural, work, and individual levels are necessary.","PeriodicalId":328832,"journal":{"name":"The Hong Kong Journal of Social Work","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116544573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A partnership between students, agencies and universities is essential to a practical learning experience. Although this article is primarily concerned with issues surrounding field education in just one Australian university, this paper also makes comparisons with cases in Hong Kong where appropriate. Several aspects of field education including the dynamics of power in the fieldwork relationship, roles and status of field educators, on-going training provided for field educators and ways to strengthen collaborations will be discussed. The purpose of this analysis is to look at the basic principles of good fieldwork practice. 實習是社工教育中不可或缺的一環;學生、機構和大學的合作,乃重要的學習體驗。這篇論文不但檢視了環繞澳洲實習教育的議題,還將它們與香港的情況比較。討論範圍包括幾方面:實習關係中的權力互動、實習教育者的角色及地位、為實習教育者提供的持續訓練,以及各種加強合作的方法。這個比較分析的目的是要檢視良好實習的基本原則。","PeriodicalId":328832,"journal":{"name":"The Hong Kong Journal of Social Work","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131331781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Age, marital status, social class, perceived health and economic condition are some of the main contributing factors in measuring well-being. In addition, social aspects such as living and familial arrangement were also investigated to establish elderly population well being. Data were collected using a survey-interview method. A total of 157 elderly in the urban areas and 145 elderly in the rural areas were surveyed. A causal model of well-being was employed to analyse the data obtained. The model of well-being was then tested using path analysis to test the causal relationships among the variables. Although the study indicated that there was no significant difference of well-being between the rural and urban elderly, the social support variables generally help improve the well-being of the elderly population.","PeriodicalId":328832,"journal":{"name":"The Hong Kong Journal of Social Work","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116299495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its many failures of organisation, scholarship and purpose should encourage other nations to look to their own experiences in developing professions of helping. The process of professionalising social services in the US has been impeded by widespread hostility to poorer and lower status citizens. Yet social work itself is complicit with these attitudes, making free institutional choices that benefit the practitioner at the expense of the service recipient; by failing to develop a credible scholarship of service outcomes; by ignoring objective credentials in deference to implicit \"experience\"; by protecting mediocrity at the expense of quality; and by promoting psychological and individual explanations over structural explanations of social failure. Mortality may be the most hopeful vehicle of reform.","PeriodicalId":328832,"journal":{"name":"The Hong Kong Journal of Social Work","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126591206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
