The educational system of our country has recognized the importance of foreign languages learning, and in addition to the mother tongue, it promotes knowledge of at least two languages, which enables individuals to use them in accordance with their needs and interests. In this paper, we wanted to emphasize and draw attention to the importance and influence of individual factors like commitment and feelings that arose in the process of learning foreign languages. The aim of this research is to examine the difficulties encountered by Serbophone pupils and students, who at the secondary and tertiary level of education, learn French as a second foreign language, and through pedagogical implications to contribute to educational practice. Through the analysis of the answers to the questionnaire and the interpretation of the results of the research in which 250 respondents from high school and university level participated, we come to know that the challenges in learning French are caused by insufficient work, minimal learning and commitment. The research confirmed that the years of learning French still affect the feelings that are aroused: negative feelings are more present at the initial level of learning, while positive ones are on the side of those who are at an advanced level and learn French longer. The aim of the study was to assess the degree of rhoticity, i.e. to test whether Serbian EFL learners’ speech is closer to the rhotic (General American), or the non-rhotic (Southern British Standard) English variety. Fifteen students (8 female and 7 male) participated in this research as informants. As for the external factors, the informants’ gender, target norm, and their media exposure to the rhotic/non-rhotic English variety were closely observed. Internal factors which were taken into account were: syllable structure, the quality of the preceding vowel and lexical frequency. The results revealed that Serbian EFL learners’ speech is, in fact, significantly closer (73.99%) to the rhotic English variety. The realization of postvocalic /r/ was higher among men, especially among those informants who labeled their pronunciation as General American and among the informants who reported greater exposure to the said English variety. In terms of linguistic factors, postvocalic /r/ was realized most often in less frequent words, specifically in word-medial position. Поје- дини фрагменти те основне верзије рукописа, уз одговарајуће прераде, објављени су у часописима и зборницима, у складу са уређивачким и техничким стандардима тих публикација. Tomić","doi":"10.46630/phm.14.2022.29","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46630/phm.14.2022.29","url":null,"abstract":"The present paper analyzes 111 contact-induced hybrid lexical blends in contemporary Serbian, i.e. new words which combine two other words belonging to different languages, namely English and Serbian. It aims at determining: (a) the preferences (if any) for the arrangement of the blends’ source words as to whether they are native or non-native, (b) (the frequencies of) the blending mechanisms, (c) the semantics of the blends, including their semantic transparency, as well as (d) some social aspects of the blends’ use. Additionally, the results obtained herein are compared with those for the contact-induced hybrid Spanish-English blends (BALTEIRO 2017) to determine whether the tendencies observed for the Serbian data are also characteristic of the Spanish data. The results show that: (a) non-native or English words tend to be arranged first, as well as fully preserved, as opposed to native words which are normally clipped if appear in first position, (b) discontinuous overlapping blends and blends of two full source words which necessarily overlap constitute the majority of the data, (c) most of the hybrid blends are of the attributive endocentric type, being fairly semantically transparent, and that (d) the Serbian hybrid blends are generally used in those social contexts such as advertising, business and product naming, or entertainment where linguistic creativity is not only highly desirable, but may have an important social function in creatively expressing identities. Желтая стрела из названия — это название поезда, в котором главный герой рассказа едет к «рухнувшему мосту». Мотив поезда и железной дороги отождествля- ется с миром и жизнью главного героя Андрея, чей поиск ответов на «вечные вопросы» принимает форму дискурса, ограниченного исключительно железнодорожной тематикой. Железнодорожной терминологией обозначается практически каждый аспект жизни глав- ного героя и пассажиров поезда, а отношение к миру за окном поезда окутаны завесой тайны, которую пассажиры не могут раскрыть в течение всей жизни. Мотивный анализ показывает, что многие мотивы, использованные автором для создания повествователь- ного мира, связаны с культурой и философией Востока, но даны в форме, как минимум адаптированной к русской повседневности конца 1990-х гг. Настала је прерадом рукописа докторске дисертације под називом „Слика – жанр српске реалистичке прозе“ коју је ауторка одбранила на истом факултету 2018. године. Монографија се састоји из шест тематско–истраживачких целина, обједињених Предговором и За- кључком: 1. Увод: Жанр слике и мимезис, 2. Статус слике у науци о књижевности, 3. Настанак реалистичке слике, 4. Конституисање слике као форме српске реалистич- ке прозе, 5. Слике из сеоског живота: основни модел жанра, 6. Перспективе слике на крају епохе српског реализма. Критички апарат садржи библиографију изворне и секундарне литературе и биобиблиографске податке о ауторки. {"title":"ТВОРБЕНЕ И СЕМАНТИЧКЕ СПЕЦИФИЧНОСТИ ИМЕНИЦА НА -АЧ И -ER ЗА ОЗНАЧАВАЊЕ ОСОБА У СРПСКОМ И ЕНГЛЕСКОМ ЈЕЗИКУ","authors":"Ђорђе Шуњеварић","doi":"10.46630/phm.14.2022.21","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46630/phm.14.2022.21","url":null,"abstract":"The subject of this paper is a contrastive analysis of nouns with the derivational suffix -ač in Serbian and nouns with the derivational suffix -er in English, the meaning of which refers to a person who performs an activity or is engaged in some occupation. The corpus was excerpted from Obratni rečnik srpskoga jezika by Miroslav Nikolić and the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. In the analysis, the excerpted nouns (215 examples from Serbian and 215 from English) are approached from the structural and semantic aspect. The aim of this research is to determine the similarities and differences in the structure of nouns for denoting persons in Serbian and English by considering the word formation, the type of derivational bases and the number of syllables of the base. We start from the hypothesis that the Serbian derivational suffix -ač is equivalent to the English -er and that they come dominantly on verbal derivational bases. The analysis shows that 44% of nouns with the derivational suffix -ač in Serbian have their equivalent ending in -er in English. There are examples that do not have the derivational suffix -er in English and correspond to Serbian nouns ending in -ač, but also vice versa. The differences are reflected in the number of suffixal morphemes for building nouns that denote persons – there are three more suffixes besides -er, while in Serbian there are seven more suffixes besides -ač. The derivational bases in English examples from the corpus are dominantly monosyllabic (58%), and in Serbian longer bases often appear (37% of examples with two syllables and 30% with three syllables). The semantics of excerpted examples in Serbian denote exclusively persons who do what the motive verb means or persons who have an occupation.
