The authoritarian nature of some civilian regimes and the concomitant sit-tight leadership syndrome have undermined robust democratic norms while the current military coups have further established the trajectory of democratic reversals on the Continent. Focusing on the wave of recent military coups in West and Central Africa, the article explores the variables that contribute to democratic backsliding and specifically interrogates the role of regional organizations, such as the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in preventing and responding to coups d’état through diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, and military actions as well as the limited impact of these interventions. The article offers recommendations for regional organizations, national governments, and international actors to address the challenges of democratic backsliding and coup contagion in West Africa and emphasizes the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance, and enhancing regional cooperation to safeguard democratic gains and maintain stability in the region.","PeriodicalId":32852,"journal":{"name":"Lectio Socialis","volume":"64 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141385502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It sheds light on the cultural and societal frameworks that reinforce honor, particularly in the context of gender relations and familial reputation. Using a qualitative methodology, the study analyzes the case of Türkiye, with a significant emphasis on the controversial withdrawal from the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, also known as Istanbul Convention. The case study is supported by an examination of legal documents and secondary sources such as research reports. The findings reveal a complicated interplay between traditional perceptions of honor, legal inadequacies, and societal attitudes that perpetuate violence against women. The study argues that while legislative reforms have been implemented, cultural and societal norms continue to pose significant challenges to their effectiveness. The conclusion underscores the urgent need for a multifaceted approach, incorporating legal, educational, and societal strategies to dismantle the cultural norms that condone honor-related violence. This article contributes to the discourse on gender-based violence, advocating for a comprehensive understanding and action to address honor killings in Türkiye and beyond.","PeriodicalId":32852,"journal":{"name":"Lectio Socialis","volume":"47 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141381625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focuses on the reflections of EU’s securitised migration policy on the influence of border policies of Greece and Turkey within the framework of securitisation theory. During the surge in migration flows to the EU, the evolution of border security in both countries has been scrutinized. As a result of research similar practices in border security have been identified in both countries. In this study, it has been revealed that the EU has laid the groundwork for the development of security-focused policies in border security by providing financial and technical assistance, as well as offering training and equipment support to both Turkey and Greece.","PeriodicalId":32852,"journal":{"name":"Lectio Socialis","volume":"63 28","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139600616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It delves into the historical and socio-political factors that fueled ethnic tensions in Yugoslavia after the Cold War, exploring how resurgent nationalism triggered ethnic separatism and violence. The Bosnian War, marked by declarations of independence, manipulative leadership, and a devastating civil conflict, serves as a grim case study of ethnic cleansing and genocide. The Srebrenica massacre, in particular, underscores the extent of the tragedy. Despite media attention, international responses to the conflict faced significant delays, raising questions about the effectiveness of the UN Peacekeeping Forces. The Dayton Peace Agreement, while bringing temporary relief, reveals shortcomings, including an ethnocentric governance structure that remains a challenge. The article also examines the establishment of the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia, which was tasked with holding individuals accountable for war crimes. This tribunal's creation underscores the enduring importance of international law in addressing heinous crimes. In conclusion, this article provides historical context and highlights crucial lessons for international law and the timely intervention needed to prevent such catastrophes.","PeriodicalId":32852,"journal":{"name":"Lectio Socialis","volume":"100 47","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139131569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the path towards a comprehensive peace accord still needs to be solved with some challenges. The unresolved status of Nagorno-Karabakh and the fate of its Armenian inhabitants remain critical points of contention. Additionally, the difficulties of Armenian Prime Minister Nicol Pashinyan in executing provisions related to proposed transportation corridors outlined in the ceasefire pact adds another layer of discord. External actors have further complicated the situation. Armenia’s domestic opposition and Iran’s strategic ambitions within the region have played significant roles. Conversely, Russia has taken a central role in overseeing the peace negotiations and advancing its interests in the Southern Caucasus. This article delves into the entrenched disputes between Azerbaijan and Armenia, examining the potential trajectory of their relations. Moreover, it provides insights into Russia’s intricate agenda, which shapes the evolving dynamics of the Southern Caucasus region. In essence, this study analyzes the intricate web of challenges, interests, and influences that intersect in this geopolitical landscape, shedding light on the intricate interplay between internal and external factors.","PeriodicalId":32852,"journal":{"name":"Lectio Socialis","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135406805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the literature on populism and the role of emotions in politics, this paper analyzes the case of Hagia Sophia by suggesting a split from economy-based explanations of populism. It is argued that the case of the transformation of Hagia Sophia as a populist maneuver can be analyzed through historical context that shapes and affects the emotion of religious grievance in contemporary Turkey. This paper discusses how the AKP and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan operationalize the case of the transformation of Hagia Sophia through religious grievances as a populist discourse to establish electoral consolidation in the wake of two large-scale crises.","PeriodicalId":32852,"journal":{"name":"Lectio Socialis","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77545958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has led to an increase in hate crimes against Asian and Asian descendants in the US, UK, and Canada. Online platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, 4Chan, and Telegram have been used to spread disinformation and conspiracy theories, and to frame the crisis in a way that promotes the agenda of building a 'white ethnostate.' Civil society and experts have expressed concerns that this anti-Asian rhetoric will normalize right-wing extremist ideology and increase its social legitimacy. It is important to understand that this rhetoric is being used to promote extremist ideology and recruit more members, and that further research is needed to prevent further tragedies. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a multidimensional impact on Asians, and it is crucial to not overlook the growing anti-Asian sentiments in both online and offline spaces, and to research the connection between right-wing extremist groups and radicalized individuals in order to tackle their harmful activities.","PeriodicalId":32852,"journal":{"name":"Lectio Socialis","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79465177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
