Many therapeutic modalities, including topical and systemic medications, phototherapy, photochemotherapy, dermabrasion, and lasers have been suggested for PLCA with variable efficacy. Over the past decade, several studies have reported successful treatment of PLCA with different types of lasers. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety profile of fractional carbon dioxide laser (FrCO2) in primary cutaneous MA. Methods: Using the consecutive sampling technique, 30 clinically confirmed cases of MA aged 18 years and above attending the dermatology out-patient department were recruited for a prospective, single group, interventional study. Each patient received three sessions with 4 weeks interval and then subsequently monitored for 20 weeks. The degree of pigmentation, rippling, itching, overall progress, and patient satisfaction were graded and compared for each patient. SPSS software version 23.0 was used for data analysis. Results: There was a statistically significant (P < 0.001) improvement in the mean percentage of the degree of pigmentation, itching (P < 0.001), and rippling scores (P = 0.03). Marked patient satisfaction was noted at 20 weeks. The excellent safety profile was noted. Conclusion: Our study has shown a positive response to treating MA with FrCO2 laser. Patients were highly satisfied, as there was a significant reduction in itching, pigmentation, and area of the skin lesion with no significant side effects. Our study points towards better efficacy of FrCO2 laser in MA with a good safety profile and better patient satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":32636,"journal":{"name":"Pigment International","volume":"72 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140522395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: The aim of our study was to find out associated ocular and auditory abnormalities in patients with vitiligo and correlate the same with the extent and duration of vitiligo. Methods:An analytical, case-control study was undertaken in 100 newly diagnosed cases of vitiligo (age >18 years) and an equal number of age- and sex-matched non-vitiligo controls. A detailed cutaneous examination was carried out taking note of the type, duration, and extent (vitiligo extent tensity index) of vitiligo. All relevant baseline laboratory investigations, complete ophthalmic examination, and a thorough auditory evaluation using pure tone audiometry were carried out in all cases and controls. Statistical analysis: Statistical analysis was done using the chi-square test and Fisher exact probability test and a P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results:Fifteen cases (15%) and five controls (5%) had ocular abnormalities (P = 0.018). No statistically significant correlation between ocular abnormalities and the duration, extent, or anatomic location of the disease in vitiligo cases was observed (P > 0.05). Sensorineural hypoacusis was found in 22% of vitiligo cases and 2% of non-vitiligo controls (P < 0.001). A statistically significant association was found between sensorineural hearing loss and the duration of the disease in vitiligo cases (P = 0.019). No association between age of onset of vitiligo and auditory alterations was observed. Hypothyroidism was seen in 16% cases versus 3% in controls (Pp = 0.004). Diabetes mellitus was present in 14% versus 3% in controls (P = 0.012). Conclusion: The results of our study add more evidence to the auditory and visual involvement and the presence of systemic associations in patients suffering from vitiligo.","PeriodicalId":32636,"journal":{"name":"Pigment International","volume":"1 1","pages":"97 - 104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83613555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It may have psychosocial impact on children and their parents. Childhood vitiligo may differ from that in adults. Aim: To study the clinicoepidemiological profile and associated diseases in children with vitiligo. Methods: One hundred consecutive children (≤18 years) of both sexes, with vitiligo presenting between January and December 2018, were included. Detailed history, examination, and laboratory parameters were documented. Data were analyzed using simple statistical measures, chi-square, independent t tests, and Fisher exact test, wherever applicable. Results: Boys:girls ratio was 1:1.5. The mean age of onset was 9.17 ± 4.6 years [segmental vitiligo (SV: 6.6 ± 3.7 years) versus nonsegmental vitiligo (NSV: 9.7 ± 4.7 years); P = 0.014]. Vitiligo vulgaris (VV; 55, 55%) was the most common, followed by focal (16, 16%), segmental (16, 16%), and others. Most common site involved at onset (36, 36%) and presentation (n = 57) was lower limbs, but differed among various types. Leukotrichia was commonly seen in SV (n = 11, 68.8%) as compared to NSV [(n = 29, 34.5%); P = 0.01]. Family history (11, 11%) was seen only in NSV. Vitiligo disease activity score +4 was the most common (69, 69%). Koebner phenomenon was more common in NSV (n = 22, 26.2%) as compared to SV (n = 1, 6.3%) and varied among different types (P = 0.01). Nail changes were present in 72 children (72%); longitudinal ridging was the most common (n = 40, 55.6%). Thyroid function tests were abnormal in nine (11.7%) and 29 (36.3%) had anemia. Two had halo nevus. Conclusion: Various types of vitiligo in children seem to differ in their clinicoepidemiological characteristics, knowledge of which helps in better evaluation and management. Anemia and thyroid dysfunction seem to be common in children with vitiligo.","PeriodicalId":32636,"journal":{"name":"Pigment International","volume":"6 1","pages":"105 - 112"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78551134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aims: The aim of the study was to compare the quality of life in female patients suffering from melasma and nonmelasma facial melanosis (NMFM) using melasma quality of life (MELASQOL) and dermatology life quality index (DLQI). Methods: It was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted in a dermatology outpatient department of tertiary care center. Modified melasma area severity index (mMASI), MELASQOL, and DLQI were calculated in female patients meeting inclusion criteria of the study. The statistical analysis was performed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS version 20; Chicago, IL, USA). Categorical data are presented as number with percentage and continuous data as mean with standard deviation. Quantitative data were compared using independent t test and categorical data using Chi-square test. All statistical tests were two sided and were performed at a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: A total of 119 patients were included in the study and consisting of 50 (42%) patients with melasma and 69 (58%) patients with NMFM. The impairment of quality of life was more in NMFM when compared with melasma group. The severity of pigmentation (mMASI) did not show any significant correlation with MELASQOL or DLQI in either of the groups. There was strong correlation between DLQI and MELASQL (Spearman rho = 0.886; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Facial melanosis impacts quality of life adversely. The impact of NMFM is more when compared with melasma. MELASQOL and DLQI should be performed in these patients to understand true impact of these diseases on quality of life.","PeriodicalId":32636,"journal":{"name":"Pigment International","volume":"56 1","pages":"93 - 96"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86933085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gold standard for diagnosis of ACD is the patch test. Aim: We conducted this retrospective study to find the common allergens in cosmetics causing ACD. Methods: Patients who underwent patch test with both cosmetic and fragrance series as well as Indian standard series, for suspected cosmetic dermatitis were included in this study. Data were collected from patch test register maintained in the department of dermatology. Results: The study included a total of 74 patients out of which 45 (60.8%) were males and 29 (39.2%) were females. Patients with positive and negative patch test had no statistically significant difference with respect atopy (P = 0.521). Of 74 patients included in the study, 59 patients (79.7%) had positive patch test to at least one allergen. In our study, the most common allergen with positive patch test was fragrance mix (n =19; 25.7%) followed by paraphenylenediamine (PPD) (n = 18; 24.3%) and thiomersal (n = 10; 13.5%). A significant correlation was observed between suspected hair-dye allergy and PPD positivity (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Cosmetics are not very safe as claimed by the manufacturers, as it may contain many allergens. Though it is also associated with metabolic syndrome, malignancy, drug intake, or syndromes. The randomized controlled trials for treatment options are lacking. Aims: This review aims to focus on the clinical presentation of facial AN, clues for the diagnosis, close mimickers, and treatment options available. Methods: Literature search for this review was done on PubMed and Science direct. Only articles in English literature were included. Results: By reviewing the literature, we inferred that only subtle differences are present among different facial melanosis. Hence, for the diagnosis of AN, a thorough history and examination is a must and, along with this, dermoscopy plays a crucial role. Conclusion: Facial AN is a marker for multiple systemic diseases. Hence, diagnosing AN well on time, will give us an edge in recognizing systemic disease early. The treatment options for facial AN are not much studied. There is much scope for studying the same in future.","PeriodicalId":32636,"journal":{"name":"Pigment International","volume":"9 1","pages":"80 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74283806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
