It is characterized by a gradual deterioration of the structure and weakening the function of IVD, leading to a decline in the quality of life (QOL) or disability.Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to perform the review of scientific reports and summary of current knowledge regarding IVD degeneration in terms of etiopathogenesis, clinical symptoms, and various diagnostic methods.Materials and Methods: The literature review was based on searching key medical databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus. A search strategy was defined, encompassing keywords, synonyms, and controlled keywords (MeSH terms). The search covered the last 20 years and focused on aspects of etiopathogenesis, clinical symptoms, and diagnostic methods. Papers meeting the inclusion criteria underwent a full-text analysis. Data and information gathered from the literature analysis were synthesized to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on the researched subject. Results: The process of IVD degeneration is extremely complex, involving biochemical, metabolic, and morphological changes that impact its structure and function. It entails a gradual loss of water in the nucleus pulposus (dehydration), resulting in impaired shock-absorbing function and leading to the formation of breaks in the annulus fibrosus, where the nucleus pulposus herniates. For years, mechanical injuries, especially work-related, were considered the primary factors causing IVD degeneration. Recent findings emphasize the significant role of genetic factors, with several genes encoding structural proteins of the IVD identified. Mutations in these genes may accelerate degeneration. Current clinical research results indicate a correlation between aortic calcifications and episodes of low back pain (LBP) and between lumbar artery stenosis, IVD degeneration, and subsequent LBP.Conclusions: Understanding the complexity of IVD degeneration and their neurological consequences is a crucial in planning effective treatment. It is essential to monitor the results of the latest research for the systematic updating of knowledge and practical guidelines in the discussed area. Collaboration between an experienced neurosurgeon and an interdisciplinary team of medical specialists can lead to achieving the best therapeutic outcomes.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":"70 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139798863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach requires coordinated collaboration among specialists, especially neurosurgeons, nurses and physiotherapists.Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to perform the review of scientific reports and summary of the current state of knowledge regarding the degeneration of the IVD in the context of various treatment aspects, both in terms of conservative therapy and surgical treatment.Materials and Methods: The literature review was based on searching key medical databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus. A search strategy was defined, including keywords, synonyms, and controlled vocabulary terms (MeSH terms). The search covered the last 20 years and focused on aspects of conservative and surgical treatment. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria underwent a full-text analysis. Data and information gathered from the literature analysis were synthesized to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of knowledge on the investigated issue.Results: Classical conservative methods include neurorehabilitation, heat treatment, proper body positioning, and pain management. The common feature of all minimally invasive methods is percutaneous access, where instruments are introduced through small puncture incisions. The effectiveness of conservative treatment for patients with degenerative lumbar spine disease fluctuates around 40%. Meanwhile, the surgical treatment of lumbalgia remains a controversial topic, with many unknowns, lacking clear algorithms and standards. Further research and the development of clinical practice are crucial for improving diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive methods related to this exceptionally complex clinical problem.Conclusions: The process of treating IVD degeneration is complex and should be considered individually in each case. Collaboration between a neurosurgeon and a physiotherapist forms a dynamic team that addresses both diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. This synergy allows for close monitoring of the patient, combining surgical and rehabilitation aspects, resulting in comprehensive care and maximizing treatment outcomes, thereby improving the quality of life (QOL).","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":"73 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139801367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study: The purpose of this study was to study the factor structure of the Multidimensional Attitudes Scale Toward Persons with Disabilities (MAS) questionnaire on a sample of Ukrainian students to create an adaptation of the original version (MAS-UA). Material and Methods: The main authors of the questionnaire gave their consent for the adaptation. The Ukrainian version of the MAS was developed using the method of back translation from the original language. The proposed multi-factor structure of the MAS-UA was tested in an anonymous online study of 1619 Ukrainian students.Results: The factor analysis and a parallel exploratory factor analysis resulted in a 5-factor structure for the MAS-UA (the classic domains – cognitive, affective, and behavioral – and two additional domains, negative effects and items concentrated in the factors “Calm” and “Desire to communicate”). These five factors yielded 62.6% of the total variance score. Conclusions: The MAS-UA was developed and presented as a reliable instrument for examining attitudes toward people with physical disabilities. The instrument can be used for the initial assessment when developing prevention and educational programs in the field of social policy, as well as to evaluate their effectiveness. Studies using the adapted version of the scale (MAS-UA) will allow the comparison of results from other countries where other language versions are used.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":"29 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140481303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of daily habits and attitudes, especially overloading ones, is an important topic of currently conducted research. Performing simple tasks correctly is an important aspect. The following paper deals with the topic of women's handbag and the effect of carrying it on various stabilometric parameters.Aim of the Study: The aim of the study was to check whether the examined women who carry a one-shoulder bag are affected by posture and the occurrence of pain.Material and methods: Forty-two womens aged 20-25 years were enrolled in the study and were assigned to two equal comparison groups: group A – ladies carrying a purse on the right arm, group B – ladies carrying a purse on the left arm. The following tests were performed: evaluation of postural stability, including total sway path (SP) using a stabilometric platform, the degree of spinal curvature was assessed with a scoliometer, the degree of pelvic tilt was measured with an electronic inclinometer, and the extent of lateral head flexion was checked with an electronic goniometer. Back pain intensity was assessed using the VAS scale.Results: There appeared to be a statistically significant difference in the transfer of the center of gravity to the right side in group A, and to the left side in group B. As for the stabilometric parameters, only the SP [mm] parameter achieved statistical significance. The highest correlations were observed in the group A, between pain complaints and the motion range of head flexion to the right (r= -0.62). In both groups, there were no significant statistical differences within the groups with and without declared pain (p>0.05). However, in the intergroup comparison for patients without a bag (p=0.01), with their own bag (p=0.04) and with a 3kg bag (p=0.02), there were statistically significant differencesConclusions: A bag worn on one shoulder can provoke the occurrence of back pain. The stabilometric results indicate abnormalities in free standing. Education about pain prevention and maintaining proper posture is important.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138956623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the many symptoms characteristic of IBD, it is worth noting the symptoms of psychiatric disorders, often neglected in the therapeutic process. IBD's impact on patients' assessment of quality of life has been proven. Aim of the study: The purpose of this article is to review the literature in regards to the inflammatory bowel diseases in which depression occured and whether there is a connection between them. We also discussed various ways of treatment depression in IBDs.Material and Methods: The analysis covers the papers found in the PubMeddatabase. The search was conducted using the followingkeywords: “Inflammatory bowel diseases AND depression” (1,598 results), “Crohn’s disease AND depression” (892 results), “ ulcerative colitis AND depression” (823 records). Articles were analized with a particular emphasis on the most recent publications.Results: A total of 51 articles out of 3313 qualified for the review. There is a significant connection between frequent occurance of depression in the course of IBDs. However, because of the similarity of the symptoms of both diseases the depression diagnostic process is difficult and thus the number of patients with diagnosed depression isundervalued.Conclusions: Depression in IBDs is a important problem, it can exacerbate the symptoms and lower patients’ quality of life. To improve the holistic care of IBD patients, physicians should implement screening, at least widely available short scales or a few additional questions during an interview.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":"30 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138966038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Enterobacteriaceae such as Escherichia are extended spectrum betalactamases (ESBL) producers, which makes their treatment difficult due to a high rate of resistance to antibiotics.Aim of the study: Identify resistance patterns against various antibiotics in Escherichia coli producers and non-producers of extended spectrum beta-lactamases in urinary infections in a population of the Toluca Valley, MexicoMaterial and methods: 155 samples were collected from patients with suspected urinary tract infection without exclusion criteria such as age or gender. Automated equipment was used for the identification of the etiological agent and sensitivity tests. For the determination of ESBL, the double disc technique was used.Results: 35 strains of Escherichia coli were obtained, of which 45.72 % have ESBL, these strains show 100 % resistance to betalactams, as well as high resistance to quinolones and tetracycline ranging from 70 to 100 %. On the other hand, the resistance shown by non-ESBL producing strains is variable both for betalactams and for other antibiotics.Conclusion: Treatment for urinary tract infections has become increasily difficult due to the high rate of resistance to antibiotics, mainly ESBL-producing strains such as the E coli strains in the present study. Where high rates of resistance to different antibiotics used in clinical practice are shown.","PeriodicalId":32604,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Pulse","volume":"112 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135541076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
