According to the dividend signaling hypothesis, dividend change announcements trigger share returns because they convey information about firm's future prospect. This paper focuses on the empirical analysis of the dividend signaling hypothesis and investigates the announcement effect of dividend changes. The study aims to examine the stock return behavior around the dividend announcement in Dhaka Stock Exchange. The event study methodology is used for this study. The abnormal return and cumulative abnormal return are calculated with market adjusted model. The event window is 30 days. The abnormal return and cumulative abnormal return are evaluated for significance using t-test. The findings of the study reveal that the reaction of stock prices to dividend omission announcement is statistically significant. The evidence tends to support the dividend signaling hypothesis that the bad news message affects the market negatively.","PeriodicalId":324801,"journal":{"name":"Al-Barkaat Journal of Finance & Management","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127520289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its function is to extend financial services to its customers. Since, the main area of operation of a bank is very different from that of operation of a manufacturing concern or a trading concern, the norms for the customers and the expectations of the customers are also different from those of the consumers of public utilities and industrial products. For any business to grow and prosper, it is the customer who places a predominant role. It is how the customer perceives the organization and feels about it, decides the future of that particular business. The perception of customers has changed over the years. The purpose of a business was to attract and retain the customers, but in present scenario, it goes beyond retaining the customers. Apart from the realities there is another important factor i.e. awareness of customers towards the goods or services offered by Banking industry. The customers will buy the product or utilize the services of the concern only if they have some knowledge about that product or service. So it is on the part of the producers to create awareness of their products in the minds of consumers.","PeriodicalId":324801,"journal":{"name":"Al-Barkaat Journal of Finance & Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116008488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study uses index of manufacturing production to represent the movements in the manufacturing sector and BSE sensex to represent stock market movement. The study finds that there is positive correlation (0.94) between stock market and manufacturing sector and the null of no bi-directional causality is rejected by Granger causality test at 10 percent level of significance in India. The study emphasises on the lead/lag relationship between stock market and manufacturing sector growth. The both Engle-Granger and Phillips-Ouliaris cointegration tests suggest that, at 10 percent level of significance, there is long run relationship between stock market and manufacturing sector in India with lag 2 over the study period. However, by and large, as we infer the positive relationship between stock market development and manufacturing sector growth, we may recommend that the capital market regulators should implement effective policy frameworks towards the development of Indian stock market in order to substantially enhance the size, depth and liquidity of the Indian stock market which in turn leads to increased economic activities.","PeriodicalId":324801,"journal":{"name":"Al-Barkaat Journal of Finance & Management","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126751119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
