This paper proposes an orthogonal M-ary polarization state modulation (OMPSM)/heterodyne detection system, which can perfectly remove the phase noise of a laser and attain a sensitivity improvement with the increase of the symbol level M in the presence of any phase noise. The fundamental principle of the proposed system is shown, and the receiver performance is investigated and compared to an orthogonal M-ary FSK system, theoretically. The results show that in the presence of large phase noise, OMPSM system can improve the sensitivity by more than 2.2 dB with less transmission bandwidth than OMFSK.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. We investigate the rerouting of guaranteed performance service connections on the occurrence of link faults, focussing on the aspects of route selection and establishment in the network. In a previous investigation, we explored some components of rerouting in the presence of single link faults in the network. In this paper we study the behavior of our techniques in the presence of multiple link faults in the network. We also examine the technique of retries to improve the success of rerouting. Our schemes are simulated on a cross-section of network workloads, and compared using several performance criteria. We use our results to develop a new delayed retry technique, which performs well for all our performance criteria.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. The missing packets and the possible mistracking that results in the speech decoder lead to significant quality degradation. In this paper, we examine recovery techniques based on speech classification and spectral extrapolation. The recovery system extrapolates independently the excitation signal and the short-term synthesis filter using an extrapolation strategy based on speech classification (voiced, unvoiced, transition, silence). The extrapolation of the short-term filter uses a least-squares fading memory polynomial filter applied to reflection coefficients. Objective and subjective quality evaluations of the recovery system applied to the LD-CELP G.728 standard for random and burst frame erasures are presented. The results indicate that the system is robust up to a frame erasure rate of 10%. Very little degradation in quality was observed at erasure rates up to 3% for random frame erasures.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. As the actual introduction of SDH equipment commences, interworking problems due to deficiencies in the context of network synchronization and timing are becoming apparent. This is due to deficiencies in pointer processor implementations which result in severe compatibility problems where interworking with client networks (like the PSTN) is required. It is shown, that by improving the pointer processor design-with a negligible impact on its cost-PDH-like transmission characteristics (jitter, wander) can be achieved resulting in a cheaper network solution with better performance.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. For efficient network management, the multi-level domain approach has been used. Management function (Configuration, Fault, Performance management) is distributed in each management domain. The management system was composed of several elements. Some of those were previously implemented in the project of the single level multi-domain network management system. The integration of different networks which have different network management schemes can also be achieved with the distributed network management system. The object-oriented distributed database was chosen for management information base (MIB). We finished the design of the system and are in the middle of it implementation in the environment of distributed campus network (CNUNet).","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. The system is intended for use in short-range terrestrial mobile radio links, particularly intervehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. The system performance over a 60 GHz short-range mobile radio channel model is analyzed assuming the average bit error rate (BER) as a figure of merit. The BER sensitivity to a number of relevant link parameters, such as the distance between transmit and receive antennas and the receiver speed is investigated. Also, the impact of code tracking errors and of differential encoding/detection of the code chips on the overall performance is discussed.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM. Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) makes it possible for the terrestrial B-ISDN, to offer multimedia services with various transmission speeds and qualities using a simple network structure. However, conversion between ATM and TDMA causes cell delay variation (CDV); one of the most important transmission problems in ATM systems. To compensate the CDV generated on satellite links, we have proposed ATM/TDMA conversion protocols. We clarify a design method of the cell number counting protocol (CNCP) and the CDV compensation performance of the CNCP by using a Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) model. The analytical results show that the CDV can be compensated by optimizing the system parameters of the CNCP.","PeriodicalId":323626,"journal":{"name":"1994 IEEE GLOBECOM.
