Performance evaluation of ATM/TDMA conversion protocol by using MMPP arrival model
In order to realize nationwide broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) systems immediately and economically, the application of satellite time division multiple access (TDMA) systems to B-ISDN is being studied. Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) makes it possible for the terrestrial B-ISDN, to offer multimedia services with various transmission speeds and qualities using a simple network structure. However, conversion between ATM and TDMA causes cell delay variation (CDV); one of the most important transmission problems in ATM systems. To compensate the CDV generated on satellite links, we have proposed ATM/TDMA conversion protocols. We clarify a design method of the cell number counting protocol (CNCP) and the CDV compensation performance of the CNCP by using a Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) model. The analytical results show that the CDV can be compensated by optimizing the system parameters of the CNCP.
