Thanks to the unusually rich source material it has, moreover, been possible to reconstruct a medieval estate that existed in the parish during the Early Middle Ages. The manor on this estate was Bona, which is a stone’s throw from the Viking Age farm.This article presents expressions of power in settlement and landscape from the Vendel Period when a magnate farm was established, to its function as a manor on a major estate in the Early Middle Ages. The article thus highlights the site continuity evidenced at Bona. It also elucidates how land use interacts with changes in settlement and how it was affected during the Migration Period crisis and in the late medieval agrarian crisis.The study combines three different types of source material: archaeological material, evidence from early maps and written sources, and pollen analysis. Querns are heavy and bulky, and usually considered an uninteresting class of objects. Despite their crucial role in subsistence and household economy, they have received very little attention by archaeologists. The present study concentrated, therefore, on the classification of querns, their production and raw materials, and their chronology. Two main types of upper and lower stones were identified in the prehistoric material. They were produced from erratic blocks collected on the surface, reflecting the local basement. Querns made from garnet mica schist by true bedrock extraction are only found in medieval and later contexts in Rogaland. Querns from the quarries in Hyllestad and Saltdal were identified. The northern part of what is today Troms County and Finnmark County were considered Sami territory before 1200. The Sami people traded with and were taxed by both the Novgorod-supported Karelians and the Norwegians. This led to hostilities between the Karelians and the Norwegians in the 13th century. As part of the manifestation of Norwegian control over Troms County the castle Skansen was con188 structed in the mid-13th century. This ancient looking earth and wood fortification was considered a strong enough defence against the Karelian enemy. During the 14th century the income generated from the stockfish from the coast of Finnmark became increasingly important to the Norwegian King and Vardohus further east in the County of Finnmark was constructed. Although still quite a weak fortification, this was a more modern castle constructed of stone. Buildings put up in stone were atypical nationally, but the Hamar bishop was an active entrepreneur in the period 1250–1350. Based on stonework, material use and stylistic parameters the present article argues that these buildings were a result of a unified stonemason milieu controlled by the bishop. The argument is based on comparative analyses of building features of churches and other stone buildings connected to the ecclesiastical environment in general and an analysis of two selected tower buildings: the central tower of the bishop’s castle at Hamar and the Mjosa citadel erected by King Hakon Hakonsson.
