From the viewpoint of molecular biology, cancer is a genetic disease resulting from abnormal gene expression due to DNA instability, such as translocation, amplification, deletion or point mutations. The purpose was first to perform functional analysis of a set of cancerous genes, and to discover or predict the other human genes that are hypothetically cancer-related. To achieve this goal, an approach consisting of three major components was proposed. Firstly, an automatic system has been developed to collect different data sets from the Internet, like human genes, proteins, and functional domains. Secondly, the functional domain compositions extracted from proteins were adopted for grouping the cancerous genes into a number of clusters by hierarchical clustering and association rule methods. The functional domains commonly existing in a cluster of genes represented the characteristic of that cluster. A second set of hypothetically cancerous genes predicted by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was utilized for testing purpose. The experimental result indicated that a total accuracy of 81.45% was reached. Actually, module testing is the most detailed form of testing to be performed. The software programmer is generally responsible for testing the modules of the program, ensuring that each performs the function for which it was designed. Therefore, managers should know how to allocate the specified testing-resources among all the modules and develop quality software with high reliability. We present the optimal policies of testing-resource allocation for modular software systems. Our methodologies provide practical approaches to the optimization of testing-resource allocation with a reliability objective. Some theorems and numerical examples for the optimal testing-effort allocation policies are demonstrated. Besides, sensitivity analysis is also discussed in detail. Digital data are easily distorted or tampered with. Therefore, providing protection from distortions or to authenticate poses a great challenge to information security and image processing. We propose a crisscross checking technique for halftone images. The host image is divided into row and column blocks from which scrambled code-blocks will be generated. The MD5 and RSA algorithms will be applied to code-strings containing code-blocks to generate encrypted sign messages. These messages will be hidden in the blocks. During the detection process, the row and column blocks will be checked for these messages. We have been motivated by the observation that many protein structural analysis algorithms suffer high time complexity, while only the residues and atoms on the contour of a protein are essential for determining the functions of the protein and how it could interact with the other proteins. Accordingly, for some protein structural analysis problems, it is desirable to invoke a mechanism that can extract the residues and atoms on the contour of a protein in order to expedite the analysis process. The conventional approach to carry out this task is to invoke the /spl alpha/-hull algorithm from computer graphics, which features O(n/sup 2/) time complexity, where n is the number of residues or atoms in the protein. A kernel density estimation based expediting mechanism with an average time complexity of O(nlogn) is proposed. We also report the experiment conducted to evaluate the effects of applying the proposed expediting mechanism to a real protein structural analysis problem. We present an approach for automatic code generation to interpret information in an XML document. The approach is based on a user-defined mapping of the XML document's structure onto the application's API. This mapping is declarative in nature, and thus easy to specify, and is used by code generator that applies advanced code generation and manipulation techniques to generate the appropriate code. They are currently receiving a considerable amount of attention. Information technologies play an important role in heterogeneous data management, data modeling, and data analysis. More importantly biological data, and any information that may be derived from such data, need to be accessed and managed easily by biologists. To solve these problems, improved intellectual mobility has been evolving and accelerating bioinformatics and computational biology toward knowledge intensive activities. The desired properties of such acceleration and evolution will be introduced in this talk. These properties include humanization, personalization, and various forms of other IT requirements, especially privacy preservation. Different from the common methods in content-based image retrieval, our stochastic mechanism not only takes into consideration the low-level image content features, but also learns high-level concepts from a set of training data, such as access frequencies and access patterns of the images. The advantage of our proposed mechanism is that it exploits the structured description of visual contents as well as the relative affinity measurements among the images. Consequently, it provides the capability to bridge the gap between the low-level features and high-level concepts. Rather than processing the extracted MV fields that are directly extracted from MPEG-2 video streams in the compressed domain, we perform MV smoothing, perform MV noise reduction, obtain more robust object information, and refine this information through a cascaded filter composed of a Gaussian filter and a median filter. As a result, the object detection algorithm is more capable of accurately detecting objects. We compare the performance of our proposed system with the popular and commonly used spatial filter processing techniques: median filter, mean filter, Gaussian filter, and no filter. Based on experimental results performed over the MPEG7 testing dataset and measuring performance using the standard recall and precision metrics, object detection using the cascade filter is remarkably superior to the alternative filtering techniques. Specifically, we show how a fault-intolerant multimedia protocol can be transformed to be able to handle certain fault cases by composing it with FT components, thereby providing dependability attributes in the resulting FT version of the protocol. We present the design of the FT components, namely correctors and detectors, and then show their correctness as well as that of the final FT protocol. Utilizing the concepts of category theory, we elucidate the overall composition of FT components and the fault-intolerant program to result in a FT program. Since the user-side configurations have many combinations, it is a hard task to test the vast combinations efficiently. We focus on the improvements for browser compatibility testing. Firstly, we built a model for browser compatibility testing based on the characters of Web applications. Then we analyzed the functional speciality of the current popular browsers, and provided the preconditions to simplify the researching problems. Next we gave an instance of browser compatibility testing and brought forward the single factor covering method and the pair-wise covering design to gain testing suits, comparing and analyzing each advantage and disadvantage.
