The suffix tree is a powerful data structure for string analysis and has many applications in bioinformatics. Its linear construction time, linear construction space and short search time all make it very impressive. However, consuming huge space is a fatal drawback especially while using suffix trees to handle the large number of DNA sequences. We utilize some characteristics of DNA sequences to reduce the space requirement of suffix trees. A new bit layout is proposed for the node of a suffix tree which requires less space than others. We also use an index table, called a \"prefix table\", which can reduce the number of internal nodes in suffix trees. In addition, we propose a preprocessing technique to improve the construction time based on our data structure. The experiments show that our proposed method is the most space-parsimony implementation of suffix trees for DNA sequences and it also has a good construction time.","PeriodicalId":322357,"journal":{"name":"Fifth International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2003. Total reliance on the Internet is inevitable when data transfers on the Internet are just daily routine tasks. Naturally, Internet related businesses are concerned about security on the Web. Researches had been done to hide important data during transfers but not enough on binary images. The task is complicated between wanting better security and needing to hide larger quantity of data. We propose a block data hiding method for the binary image that is able to meet these demands.","PeriodicalId":322357,"journal":{"name":"Fifth International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2003. We describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of an agent based adaptive program personalization system, which is designed to assist users by adapting to their personal preferences. We provide the architecture of the system, details its components, and presents the inter agent communication mechanism for the multiagent system. In our system, the feature representation and similarity measurement is based on VSM (vector space model), while the preference knowledge learning algorithm is using relevance feedback. We describe the prototype implementation, which has been implemented on PC/Linux. Thirdly, it describes our experiments and performance evaluation on the prototype. The experiment results are encouraging, which shows that the system proposed is useful to TV consumers. Finally, we summarizes the conclusions, and ends with directions for future work.","PeriodicalId":322357,"journal":{"name":"Fifth International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2003. The original approach about the progressive image transmission is that SPIHT regards the bit streams acquired from every truncation as a transmission in every phase; in every truncation, SPIHT not only refine the significant coefficients from this truncation but also re-refine the significant coefficients extracted from the previous phases. These refinements and re-refinement are not worth in many situations. The method we introduced is that, in some transmission phases, the refined and re-refined bit streams will not be transmitted immediately and will be replaced by the bit streams derived from the significant coefficients of the next truncation. These refined bit streams will be sent late. According to the experimental results, the new method has the better image quality in each PIT phase than the original SPIHT.","PeriodicalId":322357,"journal":{"name":"Fifth International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2003. A novel mechanism of similarity retrieval is proposed. Similarity measure between video sequences considering the spatio-temporal variation through consecutive frames is presented. For bridging the semantic gap between low-level features and the rich meaning that users desire to capture, video shots are analyzed and characterized by the high-level feature of motion activity in compressed domain. The extracted features of motion activity are further described by the 2D-histogram that is sensitive to the spatio-temporal variation of moving objects. In order to reduce the dimensions of feature vector space in sequence matching, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is exploited to map semantic features of consecutive frames to the frequency domain while retains the discriminatory information and preserves the Euclidean distance between feature vectors. Experiments are performed on MPEG-7 testing video streams, and the results of sequence matching show that a few DCT transformed coefficients are adequate and thus reveal the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism of video retrieval.","PeriodicalId":322357,"journal":{"name":"Fifth International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2003. We first discuss our design of a multistyles exhibition management framework using XSL for adaptive hypermedia presentation. The design objectives handled are the coding gain, the stopband attenuation and the DC leakage. As the optimization algorithm, the pattern search method is used and also as the multiobjective optimization method, the weighted linear combination (WLC) and minmax methods are handled. Some techniques and findings to obtain good optima by these methods are presented. The experimental results show the following. The pattern search method with the strategy for selecting the starting point and the method for assigning the frequency slot has a capability to yield good optima. The WLC and minmax methods have a capability to yield various good optima by varying the relative magnitude of each weight. There is a good possibility that the solution by the pattern search method is one of the global optima in some cases.","PeriodicalId":322357,"journal":{"name":"Fifth International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2003. If such systems consist of multiple processors, then the scheduling problem becomes much important. Scheduling is an important problem for both computer science and operation research. It is proved that the complexity for scheduling problems is NP-complete and sometimes NP-hard depending on the constraints of the problems, implying the difficulties for finding a good scheduling approach. We propose a method for multiprocessor real-time scheduling algorithm applicable for both computer science and operation research. Our method is general enough to solve different scheduling problems such as wafer lot dispatching and scheduling for behaviors of a robot soccer player. There are scheduling problems exist in multimedia systems with real-time constraints, although the scheduling problems for multimedia systems have some unique characteristics differ from process scheduling, we believe the generality nature of our method facilitates the possibility of our scheduling method to be helpful for multimedia systems to solve scheduling problems after some minor modifications.","PeriodicalId":322357,"journal":{"name":"Fifth International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2003. This approach applies CBR to retrieve existing agent software components from an old agent design case and adapt retrieved components to construct an agent system that fulfills the user's requirements. The design of an agent-based multimedia system is divided into the group level, agent level, skill level, module level, and code level. Those levels are organized from abstract (group) level to concrete (code) level, and multiple cases in a hierarchical representation are used to represent the design of an agent system. Reusing software components as bases to construct an agent-based multimedia system is useful because designing and building an agent-based multimedia system is a complex task and to rebuild each component of such a system is time consuming and redundant. We propose an approach to help the system developer reuse the experience of designing an agent-based multimedia system. The system developer can focus their point in problem solving instead of constructing the agent software architecture.","PeriodicalId":322357,"journal":{"name":"Fifth International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering, 2003.
