Forty human teeth with long oval-shaped root canals were sectioned at one level in the apical third, 3 mm from the apex. A modified Bramante technique was used; changes in the surface area (ΔA) of the root canal were analyzed. The sample was divided into four subgroups of 10 teeth. Each group was prepared using one of the four instrumentation systems. The morphological changes were analyzed using a software program (AutoCAD 2013). The data were subjected to an ANOVA one-way test with a significance level of p<0.05.The changes in the surface area of the apical third of the treated teeth were not statistically significant among the four groups. Resume L’objectif de cette etude etait de comparer la capacite de mise en forme des instruments rotatifs ProTaper, des instruments ProTaper manuels et des instruments NiTi manuels traditionnels dans de longs canaux radiculaires de forme ovale. Quarante dents humaines presentant cette morphologie radiculaire ont ete sectionnees a 3 mm de l’apex. La technique de Bramante modifiee a ete utilisee et les variations de la surface canalaire ont ete analysees a un grossissement x 10. L’echantillon a ete divise en quatre sous-groupes contenant chacun 10 dents, et les dents de chaque groupe ont ete traitees par l’un des quatre systemes d’instrumentation selectionnes. Les modifications morphologiques ont ete analysees par le programme logiciel (AutoCAD 2013). Le test ANOVA utilise n’a pas montre de differences significatives entre les quatre groupes.","PeriodicalId":322244,"journal":{"name":"International Arab Journal of Dentistry","volume":"184 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124669726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A convenient sample of elderly people was selected from the Department of Prosthodontics at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut. Subjects were followed six months post-treatment. The treatment possibilities included conventional complete denture, complete acrylic maxillary and/or mandibular denture supported by implant, fixed complete dentures on implant, all-on-four or all-on-six. During the interview, sociodemographic characteristics of the participants were obtained. Oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) was assessed via the Arabic version of Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). During the clinical examination, the prosthetic status of patients before and after treatment was recorded. GOHAI was completed at the date of the first visit before treatment, 2-3 weeks after treatment, and three and six months after the end of treatment. A significant improvement in the self-perceived oral health for all treatment groups was found; however a better progress was noticed among patients receiving implants-supported prosthesis (p 0.05). L’appreciation de la qualite de vie constitue actuellement un outil indispensable pour evaluer la perception de la sante orale de nos patients. Un essai clinique controle et randomise apportant un plus haut niveau de preuve scientifique devrait etre realise pour confirmer les resultats obtenus.","PeriodicalId":322244,"journal":{"name":"International Arab Journal of Dentistry","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121517393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corrections of shade, shape, texture and position are the most requested. The shade of the teeth is a very important concern for patients, especially when white spots cover a big part of their front teeth. On the other hand, all of the focus in the last few years has been to create more conservative techniques to solve this problem. Erosion/infiltration protocol using Icon (DMG, Hamburg, Germany) is one of the most conservative and efficient protocols. The Icon treatment was initially proposed as a simple and minimally invasive alternative for caries treatment of initial proximal lesions, but surprisingly the technique proved a high ability to mask the white spots by modifying the refractive index of the lesion. The aim of this article isto describe this technique in detail using a clinical case. Resume De nos jours, les dentistes sont confrontes a l’augmentation des exigences esthetiques des patients. Les corrections de la couleur, de la forme, de la texture et de la position sont les plus demandees. La couleur des dents est une preoccupation tres importante pour les patients, surtout lorsque des taches blanches couvrent une grande partie de leurs dents anterieures. D’autre part, la recherche a ete orientee vers des techniques plus conservatrices pour resoudre ce probleme. La technique par erosion / infiltration en utilisant Icon, est l’un des protocoles les plus conservateurs et les plus efficaces. Icon (DMG, Hamburg, Germany) a d’abord ete propose comme une alternative peu invasive pour le traitement de la carie des lesions proximales initiales, mais la technique a prouve une grande capacite a masquer les taches blanches en modifiant l’indice de refraction de la lesion. Nowadays, patients suffering from severe dysfunctions of the TMJ may undergo discectomy, a procedure that consists of removing the damaged disc in hopes of reducing the symptoms. However, tissue engineering presents a potential solution for patients suffering from these disorders, due to the lack of safety and effectiveness of TMJ disc implants. Since 1991, several studies have investigated the possibility of regenerating the articular disc. This literature review aims to expose the new challenges and techniques in TMJ disc tissue engineering whether it concerns cell sourcing, scaffold or bioreactors. As these challenges are overcome, the goal of future studies remains to create a functional biological replacement of the TMJ components. Resume La regeneration tissulaire est une alternative aux strategies traditionnelles pour reparer et regenerer les articulations temporo-mandibulaires (ATM). De nos jours, les patients souffrant de dysfonctionnements graves de l’ATM peuvent subir une discectomie, une procedure qui consiste a retirer le disque endommage dans l’espoir de reduire les symptomes. Cependant, l’ingenierie tissulaire presente une solution potentielle pour les patients souffrant de ces troubles en raison du manque de securite et d’efficacite des implants du disque de l’ATM. Depuis 1991, de nombreuses etudes ont investigue les possibiltes de regeneration du disque articulaire. Cette revue de la litterature vise a exposer les nouveaux defis et techniques dans l’ingenierie tissulaire du disque de l’ATM tell l’approvisionnement en cellules, l’echafaudage et les bioreacteurs. A mesure que ces defis seront surmontes, l’objectif des futures recherches reste de creer un remplacement fonctionnel et biologique des composants de l’ATM.","PeriodicalId":322244,"journal":{"name":"International Arab Journal of Dentistry","volume":"54 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127658736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CBCT data from 11 CBCT scans for 11 patients (6 males, 5 females) requiring 13 lateral augmentation procedures were imported to Simplant Pro 15® (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) in DICOM format. Residual ridge height (RRH) was measured for each implant site as well as mucosal thickness (MT). MT was classified by grades (1 to 4). Simulation of implant placement for each site was realized and the graft volume was pre-operatively calculated by a semi-automatic segmentation (SAS) technique and another automatic Simplant sinus graft (SSG) technique. All patients underwent a lateral sinus augmentation surgery 3 to 12 weeks after the initial CBCT scan. The volume of the bovine bone grafting material (BBM) particles was quantified during the surgery (Vr) for all patients and on immediate post-operative CBCT scans (CBCT-V) for 7 patients. With a mean augmentation of 9.45 ± 1.72 mm, the calculated volumes were 2.243 ± 0.962 mm3 and 2032 ± 0.843 mm3 for the SAS and SSG methods, respectively. Percent variation between Vr and SAS volume was significant (22.4%) and non-significant (4.5%) between Vr and SSG volume. In cases with MT grade 1 & 2, no difference was found between Vr and SAS volume. No difference was found between Vr (1.918 ± 1.118 mm3) and CBCT-V (1.979 ± 1.108). In conclusion, the results showed that the use of the Simplant® software was effective in determining the required graft volume for the surgery, the volume measurements with the SSG were more accurate than the SAS and the quantification of BBM particles on CBCT data sets was reliable and accurate with the segmentation technique used.","PeriodicalId":322244,"journal":{"name":"International Arab Journal of Dentistry","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126687179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when the edentulism is bordered by an anterior tooth, the goal must include res- toring aesthetics. In this situation, the axial attachment can give satisfactory results. Indeed, thanks to its design, the two factors, aesthetics and function are constantly assured. But for the success of rehabilitation, it is essential to respect the stages of the implementation of axial attachments in mee- ting the demands and requirements of the composite prosthesis. In this paper, a case of a Class II Kennedy Applegate edentulism is presented, in which the aesthetic and biomechanical problems were managed by the use of an axial attachment. Adult subjects aged 16–24 years with maxillary constrictions and bilateral buccal crossbites were included in the treatment group (n = 12). A control group (n = 15) comprised subjects with normal dento-skeletal features. Expansion appliances were used in the treatment group. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken at two intervals: before treatment (T1) and after retention period at 3.22 months (T2). 14 linear and 5 angular measurements were made in all subjects. Paired and independent t-tests were conducted to evaluate changes within and between groups. The results were evaluated within a 95% interval. The statistical significance level was established as p < 0.05. Results revealed significant increase in the length of each of the oropharynx and the tongue following treatment (p <0 .001), but no statically significant changes were found in sagittal oropharyngeal dimensions, tongue height and head posture. Also, hyoid bone posi- tion according to mandible showed significant decrease following rapid maxillary expansion (RME) (p < 0.5).
