Data on hepatitis B vaccination is scanty among dental practitioners. The aim of the survey is to describe the epidemiology of sharps injuries and hepatitis B vaccination among dental house officers. A cross-sectional survey using an anonymous questionnaire was used to collect data from 161 dental house officers at a tertiary dental care facility in Khartoum. The response rate was 95%. Sharps injuries were experienced by 37.3% of house officers. Most injuries were caused by hollow bore needles (73.3%). The one hand scoop technique was practiced by 87.6% and 60.2% used sharps disposal containers. The surgery department was the major source of incident reporting (65.5%). Most of the injured house officers did not report their injury (90%). Only 32.9% were aware of a post exposure prophylaxis protocol at the hospital. Full vaccination against hepatitis B was reported by 43.5% of respondents and 6.7% received prophylaxis for hepatitis B. Adequate education and training; provision of hepatitis B vaccination and up-scaling of dental facilities to meet safer dental practices will help to reduce sharps injuries and improve hepatitis B vaccination.","PeriodicalId":322244,"journal":{"name":"International Arab Journal of Dentistry","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127280933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A randomized controlled trial was held at the Orthodontic Department of the Dental Faculty, Al-Baath University, Hamah, Syria. Thirty patients (13 males and 17 females) with a mean age of 20.43 years participated in the study. 15 patients were randomly selected to undergo PAOO treatment. During the first week following bracketing and wire activation, labial full thickness flaps were reflected in the maxillary and mandibular arches. Prior to the primary flap closure, a bone grafting/augmentation procedure was performed over the partially decorticated bone. Another 15 patients were randomly selected to undergo conventional treatment for decrowding (extraction of upper and lower first premolars); after first premolars extraction, decrowding and space closure were accomplished. The measured outcomes for the two groups included: duration of the orthodontic treatment, canine to canine width and inter-2nd premolars-width, upper and lower incisor axial inclination, distance between ls-point to the E Line, distance between li point to the E Line, SNA and SNB angles, maxillary and mandibular arch length analysis and maxillary and mandibular incisors irregularity. The orthodontic treatment in the PAOO group was faster than that in the extraction group throughout the experiment (p<0.001). At the end of treatment, there were no statistically significant differences in inter-canines width, but the inter-2nd premolars width was statistically higher in PAOO group than in the extraction group. Compared with traditional orthodontic treatment, the PAOO procedure provides a safe alternative for patients with moderate to severe crowding who desire the benefits of orthodontic treatment in a relatively short duration. The sample studied was comprised of 10 patients who received 32 stainless steel crowns: 16 conventional crowns and 16 crowns that have been veneered with the nano-composite (Tetric EvoCeram®) using the ceramic repair system (Ceramic Repair, Intro Pack, Ivoclar Vivadent). The split-mouth design was used in this study. Each patient randomly received both types of crowns on two or four contralateral lower molars. A clinical and radiographic evaluation of the crowns was carried out after 1, 3 and 6 months and the following parameters were evaluated: simplified oral hygiene index, gingival index, crown marginal extension, crown marginal adaptation - both clinical and radiographic -, contact areas, alveolar bone resorption, as well as the level of parental satisfaction using the Likert type scale. All the crowns were intact after six months; no statistically significant differences were noticed between the conventional crowns and the esthetic crowns for all the parameters examined. A statistically significant correlation was found between oral hygiene and gingivitis in all observations; also, a statistically significant correlation was found between the radiographic marginal adaptation and gingivitis at the third follow-up only (p=0.034). Overall parental satisfaction with the esthetic stainless steel crowns was high. Veneering the posterior stainless steel crowns with a nano-composite could be regarded as a good technique for improving the esthetic aspects of stainless steel crowns with a high rate of parental satisfaction and without any negative effects on the gingival tissue. Sixty freshly extracted sound bicuspid teeth were used; two standardized cavities were created on the middle third of the buccal and lingual surfaces of each tooth. After storage for one day in normal physiological saline at 37oC, teeth were divided into four groups of fifteen teeth each. The three selected bonding and filling agents, as well as curing systems were applied according to the manufacturers’ instructions. The first group was considered as a control (without bonding agent) and cured by three different curing systems. The second, third and fourth groups were treated with one of the adhesive agents. Then all groups were coated with nail varnish and immersed in 2% aqueous solution of methylene blue dye for 24 hours, then washed, sectioned and scored under light microscope. The microleakage at the resin-based composite (Filtek™ Z250, 3M, ESPE) – tooth interface was assessed. Soft-start light-curing mode showed the lowest microleakage values among the curing modes, while the quartz tungsten halogen light curing revealed the highest values of microleakage in all types of bonding systems. Concerning the dental adhesives, the lowest microleakage values were observed when the Unibond II was used whereas Xeno III® exhibited the highest degree of microleakage. Sixty human premolars (with single patent canal) were submitted to instrumentation by means of the step-back technique. The teeth were randomly divided into three experimental groups according to the obturation technique. The first group (n=20) was obturated by Nd:YAG laser softened gutta-percha, the second group (n=20) by cold lateral condensation and the third group (n=20) was obturated using the warm vertical condensation. Each group was divided into two equal subgroups depending on the type of sealer (AH 26® or Dorifill). Afterwards teeth received an impermeable coating on the external surfaces of the crown and root (except for the area nearby the apical foramen). After obturation, the access cavities were sealed and the teeth were immersed in aqueous 1% methylene blue dye for 7 days at 37oC. After that, the teeth were longitudinally sectioned and the apical leakage was evaluated using a stereomicroscope. Al-Jundi","doi":"10.12816/0028749","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.12816/0028749","url":null,"abstract":"The growing awareness about dental aesthetics and functionality in the general population has led to more and more people seeking orthodontic treatment. The patient’s ability to achieve and maintain good overall oral hygiene and prevent periodontal disease is fundamental while undergoing orthodontic treatment. This study was done to evaluate the periodontal health status of Saudi patients scheduled for fixed orthodontic treatment. Fifty patients (12-26 years old) were selected from orthodontic clinics of King Abdul-Aziz Medical City of National Guard, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The periodontal health status of the patients was evaluated using the plaque index (PI), the orthodontic plaque index (OPI) and the gingival bleeding index (GBI). These indices were determined prior to the placement of fixed appliances, after 6 months and after 12 months of the beginning of the orthodontic treatment. Results showed that PI and OPI were high with mean scores of 65.24 ± 16.43 for PI and 53.56 ± 8.74 for OPI, while the average GBI scored a much lower value of 19.14 ± 7.95. After 6 months of treatment, the probing pocket depth at the first molars was 1.5-2.0 mm. In some severe cases it exceeded 3mm. After 12 months of treatment, the probing pocket depth was greater than that observed at 6 months and it mostly fell in the range of 2.0-2.5mm. No significant differences were observed between male and female patients for the PI (p=0.925) and for OPI (p=0.072); However, a significant difference was observed for the GBI (p=0.033). Thus it was concluded that plaque deposition during orthodontic treatment can promote periodontal inflammation and destruction. Oral hygiene measures, patient education and motivation can help maintain oral hygiene and minimize the hazardous effects of orthodontic treatment on periodontal tissues.
