With the following objectives: to identify the effects of urban population growth on student's personal hygiene and environmental pollution in the selected schools, determine the level of significance of these effects on the student's personal hygiene and environmental pollution in the selected schools and recommend ways of reducing these negative effects. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Four hundred (400) copies of the questionnaire were administered using the stratified random sampling technique and three hundred and eighty-one (381) were returned. Fifty (50) secondary schools were selected purposively from the total number of one hundred and fifty-four (154) public secondary schools within the three zones, while the snowball sampling technique was utilized in sampling the teachers who have stayed above five (5) years in their school of assignment. The effects of urban population growth on student’s personal hygiene and environmental pollution was confirmed to include that inadequate toilet facilities, overcrowding in dormitories/classrooms, uncontrolled generation of wastes, environmental pollution through open defecations, high tendency of water contamination through dirty water taps, noise pollution by students in overcrowded classrooms, air pollution and high tendency of airborne diseases as students often urinate openly rather than using designated urinals. The test of hypothesis showed that there is significant effect of population growth on students’ personal hygiene and environmental pollution. The study therefore recommends that: policy makers should formulate a policy to control student’s enrolment in line with the capacity of each school and ensure full implementation, increase in the provision of teaching aids in schools, students should be rewarded for good personal hygiene and cleanliness to encourage others.","PeriodicalId":322162,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Pollution Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129615438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated the prevalence of tuberculosis and compliance to treatment from 2010 to 2020 in Rivers State, South-south Nigeria. The Ex-post factor design was utilized and it is aimed at collecting data and analyzing some variable retrospectively without manipulating any of the variables. Data were obtained from the Primary Healthcare Management Board and the State Ministry of Health covering a total of 525 (100%) healthcare facilities accounting for primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities including an overwhelming 191 (36.38%) private healthcare facilities. Data were analyzed using frequency and simple percentage including graphs. Findings inter alia reveals that the susceptibility and prevalence rate of Tuberculosis is higher in females than males, the highest prevalence rate of Tuberculosis in female (84.73%) was recorded in 2015 while that of the male (79.12%) occurred in 2016 respectively. The highest prevalence rate of Tuberculosis was 93.99% and it occurred in 2016 while the highest percentage compliance rate 48.99% was recorded in 2019. In addition, co-infections (TB/HIV) enhance the rate of Tuberculosis prevalence during the study period. Thus, it was recommended that effective awareness and sensitization campaign of the citizen via the churches, mosque, market unions, schools and anti-natal units among others on tuberculosis prevention and control be strengthened by all concerned agencies.","PeriodicalId":322162,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Pollution Research","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123060953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

O presente estudo enseja identificar quais substratos geoquímicos são responsáveis pela retenção de metais pesados provenientes de efluentes industriais, em sedimentos de leitos de rios e de lagoa em aluviões de bacias sedimentares areníticas, na rede de drenagem natural da zona urbana do município de Juazeiro do Norte – CE. Foram selecionados onze pontos para coletas de amostras de sedimento para determinação dos parâmetros COT, Clábil, pH, granulometria e metais (Ag, Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn, Zr). A partir dos resultados, verificou-se que a fração de carbono orgânico predominante em todas as amostras foi a não biodegradável, o que sugere concentrações expressivas de matéria orgânica recalcitrante. Constatou-se correlações significativas entre os metais estudados e os suportes geoquímicos ferro e alumínio, indicando que os óxidos e hidróxidos destes elementos são os principais retentores dos metais nas amostras de sedimento analisadas.","PeriodicalId":322162,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Pollution Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131140216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The physicochemical characteristics of surface water at the study sites were mostly similar. Seventeen taxa of floatable meiofauna (extracted from sediment samples by floatation) were identified, sixteen during winter and ten during summer: By number of individuals per taxon, Nematoda and Foraminifera were the most abundant taxa. The other available taxa were Rhabdocoela, Xanacoelomorpha, Gastrotrichs, Polychaeta, Kinorhyncha, and Urodasys. Four non-floatable meiofauna taxa were encountered (Foraminifera, Mussel, Gastropod, and Ostracoda). This low diversity of floatable and non-floatable meiofauna was possibly due to the strong wave action prevailing in the region and the adjacent deleterious anthropogenic activities. Meiofaunal diversity was higher in winter than in summer, possibly due to the higher dissolved phosphorus concentration during this season. The causes of the between-site differences in meiofaunal diversity are unclear, but differences in adjacent coastal anthropogenic activities might had more impact than differences in the prevailing physicochemical traits of the interstitial habitat. New practical techniques for collecting and identifying the smaller meiofauna are needed.","PeriodicalId":322162,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Pollution Research","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131536237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The water balance components of the Dengego sub-basin were investigated using the WetSpass hydrological model. The goal of this study is to assess the water balance components in the Dengego sub-basin. According to WetSpass, the mean annual evapotranspiration, surface runoff, and groundwater recharge were 494.2, 173.6, and 20.2 mm, respectively. Actual evapotranspiration and surface runoff accounted for 25.2 percent and 71.8 percent of precipitation, respectively and recharge made up 2.9 percent of precipitation. Annually 7.3 million m3 of water recharges into the groundwater table as recharge from the precipitation on the entire watershed.The contribution of this study could be used as baseline information for regional water resource experts, policy makers and researchers for further investigation. It can also be concluded that integrated WetSpass and GIS-based models are good indicators for estimating and understanding of water balance components in a given watershed to implement an integrated watershed management plan for sustainable utilization and sustainable development.","PeriodicalId":322162,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Pollution Research","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115514944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper reviewed twenty-one manuscripts on the applications of nanotechnology in water treatment, its efficiency and major challenges including original research studies and reviews. It was found that nanotechnology has the potentials to advance and make easy the process of water purification effectively, with the merits of lower costs, energy saving, and relative limited negative environmental and health impacts. Some of the identified nanomaterials useful in water treatment and purification include: carbon nanotubes and alumina fibers for nanofiltration, carbon nanotube membranes for removal of almost all kinds of water contaminants including turbidity, oil, bacteria, viruses and organic contaminants; Zinc oxide nanoparticles for removing arsenic from water; nano titanium oxide used to degrade organic pollutants; zero-valent metal nanoparticles, metal oxides nanoparticles, and nanocomposites among others. The paper recommended that nanotechnology should be adopted in water purification and treatment in order to improve water quality and adequate water supply in Nigeria. Also, the departments of water resources planning and management should partner with available nanotechnology centres to improve the sector using this technology.","PeriodicalId":322162,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Pollution Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129553244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Five (5) sampling points were established and designated as Groundwater (GW) as follows: GW1, GW2, GW3, GW4, and GW5 respectively. The control station used was GW5. Nine (9) heavy metals (Cd, As, Mn, Cu, Hg, Ni, Fe, Pb, and Zn) were assessed during the period using an atomic absorption spectrometer and were compared with National Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) of Nigeria. The Estimated Daily Intakes of Metal (EDIM) of these metals for adult males, females, and children revealed no significant health issues during the wet and dry seasons. However, the Health Risk Index (HRI) for non-carcinogenic revealed that during the wet season Pb in the control station (GW5) had a concentration of 4.000E+0 mg/kg/day that was far higher than unity (HRI<1) for females. The Arsenic (As) values for children at GW1, 2, and 3 were also higher than unity. The pollution index for each heavy metal across sample location showed that Fe in GW1 and 3 during the dry season was high while in the wet season, values for Cu in GW4 was very high, Fe in GW1 and 2, and Mn in GW2 were higher than the unity. The overall pollution index of the heavy metal studied revealed that only Fe exceeded the unity value during the dry season whereas Cu, Fe, Pb, and Mn concentrations were also higher during the wet season. This calls for concern considering the vulnerability of children and women who may have been exposed to groundwater sources via ingestion. The heavy metal contamination as observed in this study may have occurred due to anthropogenic activities superimposed by the unregulated insanitary waste disposal phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":322162,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Pollution Research","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124664381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An experimental study was performed to ascertain the levels of heavy metals in soil and selected subterranean animals in dumpsites in Lagos State. One (1) kg each of four composite soil samples at a depth of 0 -15cm from the soil surface within the landfill were collected using an auger. The level of parameters such as soil pH, temperature and soil moisture content were determined. Earthworm, Maggot and Spider from each sampled soil were washed in distill water to remove soil particles. The heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb) were then analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The result of the study showed that Pb and Cd had higher mean concentration (0.75mg/kg and 0.1mg/kg respectively) for the landfill soil sample compared to the control soil sample and subterranean animals. The result also showed that Maggot and Earthworm had higher means concentration of Zn (0.31mg/kg and 0.14mg/kg respectively) compared to the soil samples (landfill and control) and spider. The result was not statistically significant comparing the mean concentration of heavy metals on the landfill soil and the subterranean animals. Chromium (Cr) was not detected in the study. The study concluded that there is high anthropogenic influence and persistence of the heavy metals which accumulated in the environment and pose serious ecological and health challenges.","PeriodicalId":322162,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Pollution Research","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133828853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
