Reading is one of the essential skills of language learning for non-native English learners. In recent years the concern of reading decline among students has become a point of discussion among educators. In this article, we probe how the quality of English reading is going down gradually among non-native English learning students. For this purpose, we measure the reading abilities of grade 5 students with multiple languages as their mother tongue, having probably not very different socio-economic backgrounds. The data of students (N=589) were collected through convenience sampling. Students were assessed in three domains of reading (fluency, comprehension, and reading vocabulary) through the self-developed English Reading Achievement Scale (ERAS). The results demonstrated unsatisfactory performance of sampled students' reading in English. Only 56 percent of students remained successful in the assessment of English reading. The performance of girls' school students in reading was comparatively better than the boys' students. Students' performance was probably better in reading fluency and worse in reading vocabulary.","PeriodicalId":322074,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Sciences Advancement","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115281807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The field of education is no exception in the sense of development. To counter these problems, reforms and educational projects were introduced to bring educational development. This study analyzes Punjab education foundation (PEF) school reform programs to evaluate one such project. For that purpose, the data of PEF annual reports published by the Punjab government and other articles about the PEF programs were used for analysis. The review of reports shows that the PEF introduced different programs under its umbrella to meet its objectives. The PEF provided free education to the province's less privileged areas and provided on the job training to the school staff. Moreover, educational vouchers have been provided to needy students to encourage the parents to send their children to the schools. These efforts have elevated the literacy rate and quality of education in the Punjab province of Pakistan.","PeriodicalId":322074,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Sciences Advancement","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130722656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, three different schools, private and state-run, situated in urban and suburban areas have been investigated. A total of 85 students participated in this study. The students belong to the 6th grade and their ages range from 11 to 12 years. The students’ self-esteem has been assessed using the widely used Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (1989), whereas their creativity has been tested following Torrance test of Creative Thinking (1966; 1984). The teachers of these students were also interviewed about the issue in question. This research hypothesizes that students with high self-esteem are more likely to be creative than those with lower self-esteem. The study correlated results indicate significant relationships between self-esteem and students’ creative performance. Students who live in urban areas have higher self-esteem than those who live and study in the suburbs. Also, students who study in private schools have higher self-esteem and thus better creative performance. The study also shows that high-self-esteem is, in most cases, associated with females and hence their creative performance is higher than their male counterparts.","PeriodicalId":322074,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Sciences Advancement","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128909547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, several strategies have been used to make, accept, and decline an invitation. The study’s data has been collected via two online questionnaires using Google Forms. In fact, there is one questionnaire which was used to collect data from Americans who speak English as their mother tongue and another one for Moroccan whose mother tongue is Moroccan Arabic. Both questionnaires comprise a number of parts. The first part is where personal information is provided. As a matter of fact, the participants are asked about their region and city as well as their age and sex. They are also asked about their level of education. The second part is composed of four situations for each questionnaire. The participants have to answer in American English when filling out the questionnaire designed in English, whereas others have to answer in Moroccan Arabic when filling out the one in Arabic. The results have shown that there are some similarities between MA and AE in terms of the speech act of invitation. Therefore, it is worthwhile to note that in both AE and MA, there are some indirect and direct strategies which are used to make an invitation. In fact, there are many strategies shared by both MA and AE which indicates that there are similarities. However, there are also some differences given that each language has its own socio-cultural background.","PeriodicalId":322074,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Sciences Advancement","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116796459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
