The applets are integrated into a series of student exercises which accompany the introductory and advanced lecture courses in power electronics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. Furthermore, the new applets are available via the educational project iPES which is a free collection of Java applets for educational purposes. iPES has been translated into 12 languages and has currently more than 10,000 visits per month. The novel online simulation applets are easy to use and allow an unlimited simulation of converter topologies. The concept of embedding a circuit simulator in the form of a Java applet into a public accessible homepage allows the creation of power electronic and electrical engineering courses that are easy for students to access, highly flexible and require small administrative efforts for the lecturer. The paper will discuss the technical details of the online simulation project and will show how the integration of the online simulator significantly improves the educational value.","PeriodicalId":321477,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th IEEE International Conference on E-Learning in Industrial Electronics (ICELIE)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114911882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new criteria give significant importance to hands-on training sessions in order to develop specific skills of the students according to their professional training. This paper presents the development and application of a digital controller of a power converter for teaching purposes. This design if based on an FPGA and its development is made as close as possible to a real design. The digital controller is implemented using three different approaches. Firstly, two hardware implementations using fixed-point and floating-point arithmetic are proposed. The use of the VHDL 1076–2008 standard that includes fixed and floating point packages shortens the design cycle. The third approach is a software implementation based on the embedded soft-core microprocessor MicroBlaze. The design of the proposed platform is explained, and its use in the hands-on training sessions is detailed.","PeriodicalId":321477,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th IEEE International Conference on E-Learning in Industrial Electronics (ICELIE)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122157669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The classical Spanish system has to move away from teacher-focused methodology towards student-focused learning, in which students adopt an active role in their education, making emphasis on hands-on experiences. In order to meet the EHEA guidelines, an educational innovation project has been started in the Master in Electronic Engineering offered at the University of Zaragoza. The aim of this project is to reinforce the coordination and collaboration between the Master subjects by means of a multidisciplinary practical work based on a real system. The educational innovation project proposes a hands-on test bench based in a domestic induction heating cooker, which can be implemented in modular form. Each course focuses on the design of a specific part of the whole system, taking into account that in a final project, all the modules have to operate together to implement the complete system.","PeriodicalId":321477,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th IEEE International Conference on E-Learning in Industrial Electronics (ICELIE)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132289952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the fladget considers Wiki as a content as well as mashup repository service, Wiki RESTful API is proposed. The fladget extends functionality of existing plugin mechanism, so it can use rich-client technology for interaction with distributed multimedia content, but in a pragmatic Wiki-like manner. The presented concept is illustrated by a hypothetical Linked Active Learning Community example demonstrating how the presented mechanism can be used at the community interaction level.","PeriodicalId":321477,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th IEEE International Conference on E-Learning in Industrial Electronics (ICELIE)","volume":"124 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132477677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The innovation underpinning this research is the Augmented Reality 3-Dimentional pop-up book namely “the Seed Shooting Game”, for Grade three students, in Bangkok, Thailand. This Augmented Reality (AR) 3D pop-up Book employed a research and development process through storytelling technique. This research article, describes what AR is, reports on the completed research, which focuses on instructional design process of a hybrid learning research on the utilization of Augmented Reality as an effective teaching resource. Hybrid learning draws in aspects of different learning styles. The first part of this article outlines the instructional design experience for analysis of a simple example of AR as a teaching tool. The second part demonstrates design, development and implementation of the AR 3D pop-up book which is the major tool upon which the research is based. The last part provides an insight into what was done using AR and provides pictures and captions enabling the reader to place this example of AR in perspective and understand it more clearly using the Seed Shooting Game story, a children's Augmented Reality book. It can be used in both online and off-line modes. The developed AR media is an “edutainment” in multimedia format consisting of: text, voice, graphic, animation and interaction. The major findings support the high interest of integration of new technology and educational theory in the hybrid learning environment. From the response of the students in this limited study, circumstances indicate that demand for AR will increase exponentially. However like all education the instruction technology innovation of AR needs to be researched and developed to enhance quality of education.","PeriodicalId":321477,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th IEEE International Conference on E-Learning in Industrial Electronics (ICELIE)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125689566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The classical approach is based on lectures and laboratories assisted by teachers. However, teaching power electronics it is not easy due to the student's motivation related to the difficult of this subject. In this way, this paper presents an approach to teach power electronics based on the students self learning. Instead of using the classical approach, students must develop a research work and a complete power converter prototype. Since students must have some background, this is a second course of power electronics. It is finally here that they clearly understand how a power converter works.","PeriodicalId":321477,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th IEEE International Conference on E-Learning in Industrial Electronics (ICELIE)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115293434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to assure an appropriately trained and job ready graduate workforce, it is imperative that employer expectations are incorporated into curriculums offered to students who are hoping to be trained for professional advancement. Current data gathering methods of employer expectations are time, cost and labour intensive. Reduced capital and human resource inputs result in inaccurate data collection outcomes and inevitably miss-matched skill sets for graduates. The aim of this paper is to introduce employer demand ontology which is currently being developed. The ontology will enable employer demand expectations to be accurately and continuously identified through the use of artificial intelligence. Once identified, curriculum developers will be able to incorporate these applicable skill needs into specific curricula to ensure that graduates are work ready.","PeriodicalId":321477,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th IEEE International Conference on E-Learning in Industrial Electronics (ICELIE)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122072058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
